This text is a classic resource on the professional service firm, and as a consultant this reviewer appreciates the accumulated wealth of knowledge the author graciously decided to share. The content that Maister provides here is practical and very accessible, and consists mainly of articles published separately over a 10-year time period within such publications as "Sloan Management Review", the "Journal of Management Consulting", "International Accounting Bulletin", and "The American Lawyer". While most of these articles refer to professional service firms as partnerships, the vast majority of the material is still applicable to other types of firms, including the limited liability company (LLC). And the title might suggest a management audience, but the content is important for all associated professionals, including new associates. Because this book is so well written, this reviewer also recommends a reading by those considering work in this field, either those still studying at the university or those contemplating a professional transition. There is no other book quite like "Managing the Professional Service Firm", even though it has been over 15 years since its first appearance (1993) and a host of other texts have entered this space, especially after the late-1990s boom in consulting. The foundation of this book is the simplified mission statement that Maister indicates is the same, with varying refinements, for most professional service firms: "To deliver outstanding client service; to provide fulfilling careers and professional satisfaction for our people; and to achieve financial success so that we can reward ourselves and grow". Probably no coverage of this book can quite deliver justice to its quality. This reviewer set out to list several of the articles which they consider to be above and beyond the rest, but it was difficult to include all but just a small minority of the chapters. The strength of the content is slightly skewed toward the first half of the book, but strong articles persist throughout the 7 sections covering basic matters such as balancing company composition and profitability, client matters such as listening and marketing to clients, people matters such as motivation and scheduling, management matters such as strategy, partnership matters such as performance and compensation, and multisite matters. Highly recommended.

A must-read book for those (at any level) who work at a professional services firm. For newer folks, this is an excellent primer on how businesses work, from finances to sales to customer service and delivery. For more-seasoned folks, it is a great refresh and you will likely find several great nuggets. Highly recommended read.

Right out of the gate I will admit that I am not an expert in this field. This book was recommended to me by an individual with over ten years experience working for large consulting organizations. My interest in the topic arose out of a career change I was considering that involved an association with a small consulting firm that was in its early formative stages. I found this book to be easy to read and very informative. My understanding is that Maister is pretty much considered the guru of the form and function of these types of firms. This book was published in 1993 and it is essentially a collection of earlier articles written by him for professional publications so some of the material goes back to the 1980's. As one would expect, some of the examples found in these chapters are obviously dated but the over-all concepts seem to have held up well. This book provides a great insight into the types of practices or engagements various professional service firms may have: brains, grey hair and procedural and how they relate to organizational structures and life cycles. This book would be a great value to anyone entering a field populated by professional service firms (law, accounting, management consulting, etc) - especially young people - as it provides an excellent prospective on the issues these organizations must face. It could also be of some value to management folks who must hire these firms from time to time.

The book did cover concepts that are relevant to the service industries in general. This read might make sense only while serving in an organization, which otherwise if read would just appear as advice without established contexts.I liked the comprehensive nature of the writings. The author having researched numerous service organizations seemed to provide a very detailed view and scenarios which might be eminent in any service industry. It is a must read for those starting in a service industry as well as many of the insights might make sense only in long run !

The insights into the PS firms provide a starting point for the new age knowledge based businesses should be setup and run. You do not have to be a large partnership, but even a 1 person consulting firm can benefit especially on where to spend the time, how to strategically target businesses, how to grow and empower consultants, are profits for today or the future?

As someone who has a career in consulting, I can't believe this isn't required reading for all PS firm leaders. Very logical and useful for understanding the core business model of PS.

This is an excelent book for anyone effectively running or working or even considering hiring a professional services firm. The book is extremely structured. It begins with the basics, the fundamentals of the business model, defining concepts like leverage, classifying the engagements by types, etc. After the basics are established, it goes through the most important elements for defining success: client, people etc. It is an excelent book, and after reading it, you don't need much more than that to understand this kind of industry. It is a deep work, very clearly written and useful to read. The only things that could be explored are some "real-life cases". All the concepts are developed in a pretty general way. Anyone experienced in the industry knows that all the topics are solidly rooted in practice, but discussing some cases could add some "spice" to the text and make the reading more pleasant.

Excellent read! I learned so much that helped me to manage my start-up professional services firm.

As I began to read this book, I had a belief of lack mindedness, and so I was unsure about how the author. I thought maybe this would be more an article than a book. This book was written very well, and made complete sence to me. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to gain insight as to the "Law of Attraction", and how to make it work the reader.

This book is fantastic! Eddie writes a serious yet very readable and entertaining look at metaphysics, and how we can manifest our desires and goals. He mentions many of my favorite authors, including Neville Goddard and Dr. Joseph Murphy, emphasizing the very best of their beliefs. Eddie also explains the importance of visualization and vibrational energy. I love this book because of it's warmth and authenticity. Here are a few words of wisdom shared by Eddie:"A change in consciousness results in a change in physical conditions. We have at our command the most powerful tool known to mankind---our mind. The power within our minds can heal us, prosper us, attract ideal circumstances.....the power of your thoughts is creative energy in its finest and most dynamic form"I love how Eddie stresses the importance of our vibrations, explaining that we attract through our feelings rather than our words. He says: "There is no separation between humans and the creative power of the universe. We are all connected at the deepest level of humanity......."It's a beautifully written book---the wisdom of the ages for 21st century spiritual seekers. This book is a quick read but contains nuggets of practical tips on visualizing and exercises in the manifesting process. He gives great tips about using all your senses to visualize and feel your desire, and also has tips about how to become open to receiving. He also emphasizes how important it is to actually spend time doing these exercises every day as opposed to just reading about them, the same way a body builder needs to spend some time every day doing exercises to accomplish his goal. I have read many books including The Secret, Joseph Murphy, Wayne Dyer, and this author did give some very good practical advice not mentioned in these other books.

I am currently reading this fantastic book for the second time. As some others have noted, in comparison to many other books on the Law of Attraction, this book is wonderfully concise and offers a clear and detailed plan of action for the reader. When I practiced the techniques in this book after reading it for the first time, I was amazed at the results. Many positive things came my way including sums of money both large and small from unexpected sources, free meals, Broadway tickets, the list goes on and on. The book is also very enjoyable to read because the author's words and ideas radiate a sense of positivity, excitement, and a true desire to help the reader. This book will inspire you to open the door to great things in your life as well as to help bring them to others.

This book is much deeper than I thought, it's a must, easy read and to the point that shows how it works, what the reasons why not work etc.Follows the exact directions and it will work without question.

This book lays out some good guidelines on daily routines to help you become more enlighten on your manifesting mindset. Easy read I took away some better habits for reaching what is coming my way through positive thoughts. Worth the money will give to someone in need in my circle.

I don't usually give 5 stars but this is one that truly deserves them. Why? The author kicks out all the fluff and gets straight to the point. The title actually hides the biggest message that is inside the book, that you can manifest anything you want, not just lottery winnings.This is one of those books that really explains the techniques you REALLY need to get results.If you have watched 'The Secret' and was left wondering, What now? Then this is the book to give you the answers to those unanswered questions. The film was a great plug for all the 'Law of Attraction' courses that followed. You don't need them.This short book has the answers and my hat off to the author for making it crystal clear and easy to follow.It may seem like a cliche, but things have been happening seen changing my attitude to a more positive and out going one. By simply doing what the book outlines you will get results and hopefully your dreams.Give it a try. It would be a shame if when you die, your dreams die with you. What have you got to lose?

Excellently written. Very clear explanation of how the law of attraction works. The author has done a great job of simplifying the law of attraction into daily actions you can take to make it work through and for you. I've been following almost all of the advice given in this book for over a week now and not only do I feel like a better, more magnetized version of myself, I also feel happier and more grateful than ever! I love the feeling of expectation! I haven't felt this energized since my teenage years!

I found this book in a search for a resource to help me improve my logical discourse. After reading several reviews, I decided this was the one.I really like this book and the style of writing. It has motivated me to look more into the subject. The fallacies and errors listed are discussed in accessible language and a perfectly abbreviated format (i.e. not too long, not too short). Nice, real-world examples are given to make the discussion very clear. My only reservation with giving this 5 stars is that the fallacies are listed in alphabetical order. That's great for an encyclopedia but awful for someone trying to learn. Many fallacies and errors are related and should be grouped together in chapters. In the ebook version, related fallacies, when referenced in order to show how they are similar or dissimilar, are hyperlinked. However, I find this very distracting and difficult to navigate. A second edition with the fallacies grouped together in a cognitively-meaningful way would get 5 emphatic gold stars from me.Also, a note on other reviews. Many reviewers gave this low ratings because it has a "liberal bias." I find that the book was well-balanced with real-world fallacies from both sides of the aisle, if they fall on either side of the political aisle at all. Furthermore, anyone who has read this book for understanding would know that just because a fact makes you feel bad doesn't make it any less true.Give this book a go. It would be a great reference for those who have a little bit of experience with logical discourse and, if organized by a talented teacher, could easily be used in high school or college for any class that seeks to improve a student's logical reasoning abilities.

I got a copy of this book for my 10 year old. Then I decided that I needed to read it myself, in part as a reaction to having been in far more conversations around recent political events where some of the arguments made no sense to me. The book helped me understand how to recognize and address those kinds of arguments. It also has helped me to take a step back in discussions in other domains, including technical discussions at work.Having a framework for understanding these kinds of fallacies can help you to put a conversation in context, and be able to (more) calmly address the issues people are raising, rather than react emotionally and perhaps commit the same kind of fallacies yourself.While I can’t speak fully to the thoroughness of the discussion of the fallacies I found this to be a really good bit of background. My one complaint is that some of the examples are a bit forced, but the author still makes his point most of the time.Reading this book is a tool that can help you navigate conversations (especially political ones) be they on Facebook or in person.

It started out to be interesting, but then the author almost appears to lose interest in his own argument, or has gotten distracted by politics. Instead of continuing to present his material, he goes off on political quips. The book becomes more about why he dislikes Christians and Republicans. This happens about 1/4 the way into the book. Is this a book about debate tactics, or just an excuse to express his distain for his political opposites? Less politics. More subject matter. It is disappointing.

Very detailed explanations of logical fallacies and appropriate rebuttals. But I'd like more orginization. Maybe a chart to show the relationship between different fallacies? The book is a compilation of random fallacies, with mention of how the relate to one another (one may be a subset or opposite of another) but they are not ordered in a way that makes sense. Otherwise I would have given this book 5 stars. Good info- but poorly organized.

An excellent book. Finally, a very organized book to help ascertain, a truly logical argument. Having read this book at an opportune time, the presidential election, it helped me to clarify my thinking and see through some of the aberrant arguments. I felt in many cases the statements were not "correct" but could not put my finger on "Why" they were erroneous. That will not be happening any more, in a large part, with the help of this book. Thank You.

Starting with the cover this book has some funny stiff to it for sure. It makes you think and gives you a devil's advocate type of look at most arguments. It kinda makes me want to go to the water cooler at work just to practice my new learned skills. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review and believe it would be perfect for someone that debates a lot or like to have a different way to respond during their next discussion. Some of the fallacies reviewed in this book are Just Because, Spiritual Fallacy, Appeal to Authority, and Appeal to Fear to name a few. Each have a pretty good argument.
