I was so taken with this book of comic super villains, I purchased several copies to give as gifts. I also purchased the “hero” book in this series as well. I think that giving both books makes for a great history of some (not so) lamented comic book characters of the past. The book is broken into three parts: The Golden Age, The Silver Age and The Modern Age. The Golden Age spans the years 1938 through 1949. The Silver Age covers 1950 through 1969. Finally, The Modern Age is from 1970 through the present (i.e., when the book was published 2017.)Not surprisingly, most of the regrettable villains are from the Golden Age. One of my favorites from this time period is Colossus A.D. 2640. The villain is set in the future and it is future where illegal steroids can do terrible and mighty things. Sadly, there was only one book so the end of the story has never been told.I've enjoyed comic books throughout my life and have quite a few saved from my childhood and from when my children were young. I must admit that I don't have any of the books shown in this book (though I was only getting comics very late in The Silver Age and in The Modern Age.) I think this book and its companion make a great addition to my small collection.

Do you watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftraxx? Does watching Ed Wood movies give you enjoyment? Do you find joy in the bad? This book is for you.Anyone who loves comics and comics history should pick up this book. While most reference books covers the great stories, the best villains, this book delights in failures of comics book creations. Written with snark but still lovingly so. This book contains synopsis, illustrations and publishing information. It's a fun and light read. Now the only three negatives I can see. The Kindle Layout has much to be desired. Too much white space and bad text flow. The information on the creators may just be for the entire series, not for the story in which the characters appear in. Third it doesn't feel comprehensive. There seems to be a few more they could have added. But over all it is great!

I actually bought this for my husband's birthday and he loved it. We laughed for hours at some of the truly bizarre super heroes from comics of the past. Some I would never have believed were real and not a joke if I hadn't seen it. There is a lot in this book, many characters and info and anyone into comics, art or retro kitsch would like it. Arrived fast and in fine shape. Would love to see more of this type of thing.

Really fun read for any comic-book fan—especially kids from more modern times, who aren't at all familiar with sillier villains from more obscure comics. The book itself is neat as well: the hardback covers are printed so they look a little aged and torn at the edges. Villains are divided into three big chapters (Golden, Silver, and Modern ages), with each one getting a full-page illustration and another page of history.

Bought this along with "Regrettable Superheroes" for my son-in-law who has a PhD in Medieval English but is a HUGE superhero nerd. He thought it was the greatest gift ever. What I like about it is that the villains and superheroes aren't just made-up for this book, they are actual characters who were published and these books give you the history on them.

Like the first Legion of Regrettable this volume is amazingly pretty and fantastically funny. Buy it and spend hours laughing and sharing silly stories you learn with friends.

A companion to the legion of regrettable superheroes, this book is just as fun and nutty. They only thing that could make either volume better, would be more illustrations. Read this and have fun!

Just like its predecessor, full of wit. A book that celebrates the odd and painful end of comics while offering up a succinct history of the medium.

Review

Praise for Cascadia's Fault"Reporter Jerry Thompson puts the history of subduction earthquakes and the resultant tsunamis into clear perspective. In Cascadia’s Fault: The Coming Earthquake and Tsunami That Could Devastate North America, Thompson has written a very readable tale of how plate tectonics and earthquake science works, and what we need to know if we insist on being Left Coasters." —Sacramento News & Review"A level-headed look at a potentially devastating natural disaster . . . fascinating." —Booklist“Writer and director Jerry Thompson describes the brilliant scientific research conducted by Canadian and U.S. geologists and geophysicists that led to the important discovery that the Pacific Northwest experiences some of the largest earthquakes on Earth––giant subduction zone earthquakes. The Cascadian Subduction Zone is armed and dangerous––an earthquake comparable to, or even larger than, the great earthquake in Japan in March 2011, is inevitable. This inevitability demands that we better prepare ourselves and our cities for ‘the Big One.’ Cascadia’s Fault is a captivating read that gives readers a sense of the excitement of scientific discovery and the importance of science to society.” –– John Clague, Directore, Centre for Natural Hazard Research, Simon Fraser University“If you don’t know much about the risk posed by Cascadia, then you are not alone; indeed, for a long time even geologists were in the dark. The story of how they slowly uncovered the danger signs is the focus of journalist Jerry Thompson’s excellent new book, Cascadia’s Fault, a creditable attempt to raise awareness beyond geoscientists and emergency planners who have, as he puts it in his introduction, been ‘having a devil of a time getting anyone to pay attention.’” –– Highly Allochthonous"Jerry Thompson, a longtime journalist, doesn't say much if anything about politics in his new book. But the political implications of his book, for Canada and the United States, are inescapable." –– The Tyee"Thompson, a journalist and documentary film producer, presents this frightening look at the Cascadia subduction zone and the risk it poses to major American West coast cities through powerful earthquakes and devastating tsunami waves. Drawing from current seismology research and the effects of recent massive quakes in Chile, Sumatra and Japan, the work outlines the risks to this seemingly quiet section of the "Ring of Fire" and advocates for better disaster preparedness as the only way to survive the inevitable disaster to come." –– Booknews

I took a chance buying and reading this 'earthquake & tsunami' book. Most of the information in it I was already aware of. But it is OK for someone just now looking into the subject. The author puts forward the case for the certainty that the Pacific Juan de Fuca plate pushing under the coastal area of Vancouver, Washington state and Oregon (North America plate subduction zone) will (again) result in an earthquake and tsunami on a par with the Sumatra quake and tsunami of Dec 2004. The event affected not only that immediate area of Indonesia, but also the entire North Indian Ocean basin. Deaths were in the hundred thousands.A considerable part of the book tells of evidence that points towards much earlier (pre-historic) quakes/tsunamis at 'Cascadia.' is written in a sort of 'chatty', personal style. The author is not a scientist. He is a Canadian writer who was once a network newsreader.

This book is frequently recommended for people who live on the west coast of North America, especially from northern California into northern British Columbia in Canada, as residents of those areas are at risk for earthquake disasters, especially tsunamis from the Cascadia subduction fault. This fault line runs north of the San Andreas fault and appears capable of generating a 9+ earthquake and tsunami about every 500 years. The book covers the painstaking development of the awareness of the danger the fault represents and the emerging awareness generally as to the causes and characteristics of earthquakes and tsunamis. This is a worldwide endeavor and the author covers the international scientific community that has led to the understanding of these events, with the close study of the recent historical events in Sumatra, Chile and Japan providing new insights into what can happen in these disasters, how they are similar and how they can differ. Of particular interest to me was the descriptions of the sharing of information among earthquake specialists internationally so that everybody benefitted from the information that became available through close study of these events. I was also very interested in the practical applications that different communities made to reduce the risks to the residents of these earthquake prone areas, especially when trying to educate the people about rapid evacuation to higher ground if they are in a coastal area when they experience a severe earthquake. The death toll in the 2004 earthquake and tsunami was partly due to the people not being aware of the risk of the tsunami until it was too late to get far enough away from the coastal area to be safe. I was very interested in learning how this knowledge is being used for the planning of mitigation for these events. This covers everything from developing quake resistant building codes to educating and training the populations of these coastal areas as to the importance of rapid evacuation of the lowlands in the event of an earthquake. Highly recommended.

Jerry Thompson treats the scientific effort to uncover the secrets of the Cascadia subduction zone into something akin to an adventure novel. It is thus understandable to both the scientists and the lay reader. A first rate job of investigation and story telling.

When you walked out of the front door of our beach house in NW Lincoln City OR, there was a plaque in the street, "Tsunami Zone". Didn't know how serious they were1 Great book, super research! VERY interesting, and when fact checked, validated itself. Scary! Read book with a pencil, you'll want to refer back to it when the "big one" hits. Thanks Jerry! Dave (in Colorado)

Cascadia's Fault addresses a probable scenario of a 9.0+ earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone from N. California to Vancouver Island, BC, followed by a tsunami that could rise as much as a 60 storey building at shorelineAlong the entire zone. Developing the potential risk from many different studies, indicating this subduction followed by a tsunami has occurred at a regular frequency over thousands of years, causing the shoreline to shrink. Jerry Thompson meticulously details studies done from many different angles, including studies of the history of Tsunamis in Japan, correlated with verbal records from Native North Americans regarding the tsunamis. If you have a scientific bent, or are interested in disaster preparation, this is an excellent book. If you live in a coastal area, you might begin to study the elevation of the land in your area relative to the location of your house. The appeal of the book is much broader than that.

This is the second book I've read about the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The first was a novel called Saving Cascadia which was about what happens when an mega-quake strikes the Seattle area.I've read a number of books on western North America geology; Basin and Range, The Big Rip, etc, this is a good one. Technical enough to be useful but broad enough to be readable.I wonder which will happen first? A Cascadia mega quake, Yellowstone eruption or New Madrid quake. I hope none of them happen during my lifetime.

This is an essential book about the very real threat of a mega-earthquake and mega-tsunami off the coast in the Pacific Northwest. The book documents the evidence and describes the chronology of discovery leading to the realization of the enormous hazard. I would have liked the author the spend more time on the frequencies of quakes in the area and especially the expected imminence of the coming humongous quake, but overall, anyone in the area living at low elevation who reads this book will definitely, and justifiably, consider moving the higher ground immediately.

During our first trip to Italy, our tour package included three Tripbuilder books --- Rome, Venice and Florence. These turned out to be the best guides ever! Although we had Fodor's guide to Italy, we found that we relied on the Tripbuilder books a lot more for very simple reasons: the colorful and detailed map, guide to public transportation, color-coded keys to areas of interest, the short but intriguing historical commentaries on each entry, tips for tourists, and the perfect booklet size to put in a pocket or purse. The Tripbuilder series was so helpful during our trip that we have since ordered additional books for our next trip to London, Paris and Amsterdam. We sincerely hope that they will keep adding to this series as we make our way through Europe because we plan to collect ALL of them.P.S. I lent one of my books to a friend who visited Florence after we did. She loved the book as well, and told me that it certainly made her trip so much more significant and enjoyable because of the great information in the book.Kudos!

I found these books extremly useful in my trips around Europe. They are so small and compact yet they give as much information if not more about the city you are currently in. I have used other guides before, but you have to rummage through hundreds of pages before getting to the correct landmark, with a Tripbuilder it is a quick and easy way to have a hassle free trip. I FOUND THESE GUIDES EXTREMLY HELPFUL! I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THEM! **ALBERT SCULLY**
