This book does a great job of covering what is unique to ASP.NET Core while giving an introduction to related technologies such as EF Core and .NET Core. The book is structured to help you learn. It is not a reference manual (even though it can provide a lot of that).If you want to become skilled at using more that the rudimentary ASP.NET Core features, this is the book for you.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's very well-written and it makes concepts easy to understand. As a visual learner, I especially liked the many figures that were used to explain various concepts. There are also many tips with practical information and recommendations. Code snippets are annotated and explained thoroughly.Each chapter ends with a list of the main concepts covered, which is great when going back to review what you learned. As a bonus, there's an appendix chapter that disentangles the meaning of .NET Core and .NET Standard in a very clear way.My only small complaint with the book is that all recommendations for other books were published by Manning. There are many good books that weren't published by Manning!
Andrew covered each topic very well and I love reading this book.
I went through a PDF version of this book (a hard copy is still not available in my country) and I found it to be disappointing. I'm happy to say that the author explains the inner workings of ASP.NET Core very well and that too in an easy to understand fashion. However, my biggest concern is that this book deviates from the most important and interesting aspect of all 'In Action' books - learn by doing. This book discusses a lot about many aspects of ASP.NET Core without providing enough code samples and concrete, real-life examples. There's a lot of verbose theory going in each of the several pages (714 pages in the PDF version) but I really doubt if that's really required - the official online documentation serves the same purpose in fewer pages. The author should understand that we programmers read programming books so that we can immediately start writing code and become productive as soon as possible. Look at a Petzold book, for example, and see how he manages to engage the readers by providing very nice examples which inspires you fire up Visual Studio and start writing code. To that extent, this book doesn't quite deliver. I hope the author will address these short-comings in a future revision of the book.
I enjoyed reading this book from cover-to-cover and will be using it in one of my college courses. Lock does a great job of explaining both the what and the why, which is something I highly value in a programming book. Lock demonstrates both Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code, and gives explanations on one IDE is preferred to the other. He also provides practical examples that are easy to follow.
