This is great! I started knitting less than a dozen years ago. An online knitting friend recommended this book as an excellent reference for details and techniques. I will have to thank her. The book is written in an easy to understand manner and has clear illustrations.I skimmed through the book and already learned several new ways to do a couple things. Great reference! I look forward to using more of this book in future.I saw a review that complained about the translation not being done well, based on the reader not understanding what was meant. Well, all I can say is that the example she cited only illustrated that perhaps this 'experienced knitter' needed this book more than she realized. I perfectly understood what was meant even from the brief description given. Maybe a good dictionary or a knitting class would help.
This book is full of great illustrations, pictures, and color, so much vivid color. When I opened the book I expected the regular hodgepodge of bad pictures and unclear instructions-well I was wrong! This book surprised me with perfect pictures of each process, the instructions were clear and precise.I loved the colors used because you could easily see what the instruction was conveying. I would like each of my collar choices to look just like the ones in the book, and I believe I can accomplish that. This would make a great additon to any knitters library, I know it did mine.
I own many, many knitting books. I buy them for the pretty pictures as well as the content. I thought I was just getting another pretty book but NO. This book is an amazing educational tool. It is the clearest explanation that I have ever seen of some very tricky techniques.The pictures are clear as well. I was VERY pleasantly surprised that I could actually use the book for techniques I was unsure of such as the Kitchener cast on.The book is old but old is not a handicap for a craft such as knitting.
I heard about this book on the Knitmore Girl's podcast, and on their recommendation looked it up. Boy am I glad I did! At first glance it looks like a pretty typical 'how to knit' book, but as you read past the first few pages you will find a wealth of information on finishing techniques and practical tricks of the trade. If you are serious about improving your knitting, this is a must have resource!
lot's of stiches, and it explanes how to more than some books, and as I new knitter of 3 weeks there is a lot of reading,and learning to do with this one, as all new knitters we look forward to learning.
I just want to say that I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book. I have alot of knitting books and they always give requisite beginner instructions, and then go on to specific patterns using specific yarns - i.e., yarns available at the time of printing, not necessarily available when the book is purchased. What a wonderful surprise to find in this book clear instructions on many techniques I don't find in any other books. The pictures are clear and the language is understandable. I would recommend this for anyone looking to hone technique and push their skills to the next level. This book may not be for those who are mostly interested in fluffy fashion yarns for scarves and purses.
This is one of the indispensable knitting books. It has both an invisible cast on, and an invisible cast-off. Following any of the guidelines in the book will leave the knitter with an immaculate garment.
At age 61, I have been "knitting" since I was in my teens and my aunt taught me. But frankly, I'm probably not the best knitter.I have had this book a long time, and I, too, thought it was too advanced for me -- until today.Then, something clicked while reading this book and looking at Buss's plentiful photos. And I have just completed my first "meaningful" knitting project.It was simple. It was just a hat, but it's a hat that fits ME! That I like, that I designed (simply) for myself, and actually, also for my neighbor who works in a nearby factory that has no heat in the shipping room.Things I never understood about knitting -- because my aunt lived in Oklahoma City and I lived out here in New Mexico -- suddenly were explained.It's like she's filling in the gaps of things I never knew... right down to how to make one of those big fluffy thick pom-poms!So I say, my E-Z (Elizabeth Zimmerman) knitting moment turned out to be a K-B (Katharine Buss) knitting moment while reading The Big Book of Knitting.I know I don't know everything yet, but the door has cracked open, and I'm on my way.I DON'T recommend this book for beginners (unless you're willing to hang onto this book for as long as 20 or more years... ) BUT it has helped me, and I'm very happy and excited and I know I'll never knit the same again!Thanks, Katharine!
