I am very very impressed by this book. I'm currently working on a video project for a course I am taking and I have to finish a number of shots with various motion graphics and effects. I'm familiar with After Effects, but certainly no master at it, so I wanted a book that focused on compositing and more advanced effects that the beginners training and books do not cover in sufficient depth. This book has come through for me big time! The thing I love about this book is that it talks about various topics and various approaches and tools within after effects you can use to solve those problems. It even talks about various suggestions for 3rd party plugins, in cases where the basic After Effects tools are lacking. It doesn't hold your hand, telling you what buttons to click, it assumes you know all that, or can figure it out. Topics in the book include keying, color correction, explosions, beam effects, smoke, fire, rotoscoping, and all kinds of other neat things. This one has definitely earned a permanent place on my bookshelf, and new status as my favorite After Effects books (and I have quite a few).

It was not expected quality

Tons of Tips and Tricks to truly understand the art of compositing. A definite buy for somebody interested in VFX or motion graphics.

To be fair to the author, it's probably a great book for those that were looking for what it provides. I was looking for more of a cookbook type of approach. In that regard, the chapter on expressions was perfect. The rest of the book, in my highly unqualified opinion, is more appropriate for people who know how to do these things but would benefit from rethinking the subtleties of their approach to improve their output.As I said, probably a great book for the right target market, which wasn't me!

The item came very quickly and the book is nothing but great, the problem was that the book came with some issues like scratches and dirty spots.

As a longtime digital artist relatively new to the After Effects arena and Compositing in general, I find this book to be an invaluable learning tool that I'm constantly referencing. It's very well written and manages to integrate both the artistic side and technical side of compositing and After Effects. It's not overly heavy on tutorials, which is nice, because those can be found anywhere online. Instead, the book explains by showing how and why using a certain tool or method is the optimal approach. There's often sidebars that explain the technical reasons as well.Part of what I like most about the book is the tone of the author, Mark Christiansen. He's got a sharp wit, that's evident in his writing style and I caught myself laughing a few times which I can't say has ever happened to me while reading a book on software/design training. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to beef up their After Effects skills and more specifically, those who want to learn compositing as an art form.

Mark does it again with his new book for CS4 packing a large amount of his great visual effects knowledge into this new edition. The forward by Stu Maschwitz alone is funny to " Who Brings the Sex" about explaining the " money shots " visual effects artists are expected to produce daily Backing this up the books has some scripting guru's like Jeff Amsol and Dan Ebberts to get your Java/Expression fix. This is definitely the book for the serious compositor using After Effects with real world examples and solutions from a real world visual effects artists/supervisor you can not go wrong with taking your time with this book.The Chapters I found most helpful cover topics of 32bit HDR compositing and its complex underpinnings , the always tedious Rotoscoping and Paint and the section on Creative Explorations(Light,Climate and Pyro).Mark also happens to be a professor at FXPHD.com where you can get even more of his compositing teachings. A+++ must have for your bookshelf.

I also own the CS3 book by the same author.Highly recommended. Lots of detailed information to be found, both for After Effects and VFX/Compositing in general.I could probably be categorized as an intermediate user and the book seems to be at the perfect level for me. There are probably better books for an absolute beginner, but everyone else will find a reason to keep it around, even the seasoned pros.

I am very picky about the cookbooks I actually purchase anymore, but will say this one is critical to your collection. Ana is a genius chef, and not only have I prepared several of these recipes on my own, I had the distinct pleasure of cooking with her one day in my kitchen at work!!! She's brilliant, thoughtful and knows her business. Wow, memorable day for me. Since then, I keep many of these spices she writes about in my arsenal and it never fails that people will try to figure out what spice or ingredient is in a dish (which they rave over). 9 times out of 10, it's one of the spices I learned about in this cookbook.

A cookbook above all should be a source of usable recipes for meals. This book contains spice mix recipes, in-depth info on individual spices, sauce and condiment recipes, recipes with many unusual (seldom used) spices and complex food preparations. I couldn't find a recipe for a main dish that I has at least most of the ingredients, and I have an extensive spice collection including middle eastern spices. I will use this book more as a reference for spices vs actually cooking recipes from it. A bit disappointing it wont be a "go-to" book like other recipe books I have.

After dining at Ana Sortun's fabulous restaurants in Boston, "Oleana" and "Sofra", I rushed out and ordered this book as well as her other cookbook "Sofra Miz". In just 2 weeks this has become one of favorite cookbooks - I just can't stop cooking from it! The Chopped Romaine and Cucumber Salad with Yogurt Dressing is amazing (we've made it 3 times in the past week - its that good!). We've also made the Roasted Crispy Duck with Tomato-Sesame Jam and the Rice Cakes (except I substituted riced caluliflower because we're grain free) - all fabulous! Can't wait to try more from this beautiful, creative cookbook.

Ana Sortun's restaurant Oleana in Boston is amazing, and her cookbook has some of her best recipes. I like how she organizes her recipes by spices categories rather than by meal - it helps you to understand the flavor profile of each dish. Many dishes are definitely labor intensive, so I wouldn't recommend this for someone who wants something quick and easy.

For American foodies, Middle East cooking is fraught with peril. Not only do popular specialties like hummus, baba ganoush, and falafel represent stereotypical ikons of this huge region. But as one becomes familiar with more sophisticated choices, it's easy to dismiss them because of: 1. hard to get ingredients 2. time consuming steps for dishes like stuffed vine leaves, moussaka, Persian rice, etc.Now comes Ana Sortun. She has demystified the exotic herbs and spices that define the Levantine palate by describing how she discovered the real thing in Turkey and/or other eastern Mediterranean lands.She should know because her Cambridge, Mass restaurant Oleana offers most every item featured in this handsome treasury of easy-to-follow, step by step recipes. True to its eponymous title, the book is organized by spices, i.e. the predominant seeds, leaves, and blossoms that flavor her signature dishes. It also includes a comprehensive list of web sites and shops that carry admittedly exotic or hard to get ingredients.One reason for her success is the descriptive passages preceding each recipe. She tells stories of where she encountered the ingredients. She describes the (mostly) women and men who introduced them to her. Then she shows how she and her talented restaurant staff (everyone is credited, including her farmer husband) have adapted traditional recipes for the modern palate. This approach is more than nouveau, more than fusion. It takes tradition, and then expands on it with surprising results. Thus, hummus the old way morphs into a delectable parsnip creation, and falafel becomes a crunchy spinach/chick pea marriage.But Sortun doesn't stop there. Because she has trained in France, she shares secrets about that country's cuisine. She generalizes about the use of cream and butter and riffs on why cooks should avoid extra virgin oil when sauteing. This is not a cook book for beginners, but, in the great narrative tradition of M.K. Fisher and Julia Child, it is a celebration of creating authentic gustatory delights - a tour de force truly enhanced by the spices of life.

You'll definitely get some good ideas out of this book, it's clear and readable. The organization is interesting; it is by spice group, not by food category. The book would be helped if it had more detail on the spices and more variety of recipes and ideas. As an example, there are not a lot of recipes for using sumac, even though it gets a section titled for it. All around a good read, even if you don't end up using many of the recipes, it has some fresh ideas. Would be a better buy in paperback or Kindle.

I enjoy eating out at Mediterranean restaurants and I also like to cook. I grow some of my own herbs and enjoy taking some time in a shop that has spices I haven't know about before. This book puts all that together for me with enjoyable stories, great recipes and the organization of the book around specific spice sets makes it extra fun to read and cook from. I highly recommend it.

The spice recipes are fantastic and easy to follow. I never heard of Dukkah or Persian Spice Mix until reading this book! WOW!

Having grown up in the Old Colony housing project, he describes his neighbors' indigence and pride of place, as well as their blatant racism (in 1975 the anti-busing riots in Southie made national headlines) and their deep denial of the organized crime and entrenched drug culture that was destroying the youth and social fabric. MacDonald's account is filled with vivid episodes: of his brother Davey's horrific incarceration in Mass Mental and ultimate suicide; of the time Helen took her older kids to the hospital, where her current lover was a patient, to beat him up after he denied he was the father of the child she was carrying; of the murder of his brother Frankie by his compatriots after the police shot him in an armored-car robbery. Michael MacDonald's "All Souls" is a beautiful example of "this-and-that" writing. His coming-of-age memoir of growing up in the rabidly Irish-Catholic enclave of South Boston during the transitional 70s and 80s (drugs, integration, development, gentrification), neither excuses nor glorifies his neighborhood's appalling problems. He simply lays it all out in graphic, oftentimes violent, storytelling images. His style is more journalistic than memoirist: This is what happened - as he knew it or saw it, but not as he felt it - and that was that.Although I loved this book, I only gave it four out of five stars since it wasn't originally conceived, even though MacDonald is an original voice, and was poorly edited. "All Souls" was released more than two years after the 1998 independent film "Southie," starring Donnie Wahlberg, (the movie was shot in South Boston in 1997), which introduced many of the same literal and figurative ideas found in MacDonald's book.Perhaps MacDonald realized that along with all of South Boston's other lost chances - of lives, futures, hopes, traditions, neighborhoods and families - that the chance to tell their own stories was also being taken away by "outsiders."MacDonald deftly uses that victim mentality - that Southies see things as being taken away when in reality they are being left behind because they refuse to adapt and change - as the central theme for his story. South Boston was a proverbial case of "pride goeth before a fall." In MacDonald's telling, it was a hard pride and a hard fall and one from which Southie has yet to recover.

The book is interesting for its image of Southie as seen through the eyes of a child growing up there.The story starts out in the early 1970s, roughly 1974. I lived in greater Boston at this time. I moved there for work, excited to move to a college town, in the state that voted for George McGovern. Unfortunately, Boston was not just a college town. I had the wrong accent, and in business there were many Bostonians who treated me as an outsider, not to be trusted. That same distrust of outsiders pervades Southie.The events of the day were very disturbing. Having campaigned for Tom Bradley (first black mayor of Los Angeles) a few years earlier, I was horrified by events in Boston. Louise Day Hicks, people shouting “Bus the n****** back to Africa,” and the stoning of school buses were all beyond my comprehension.Although I witnessed racist parades in my neighborhood on Massachusetts Avenue, I only saw the events in Southie in the news, either the Boston Globe or WBZ. I had two colleagues at work, Joe and Michael, both from Southie, who had advised me not to go there without one of them to escort me. Hearing of the racial conflict in Southie, I envisioned working class whites against black kids, when in fact it was poor whites, many on welfare, resisting integration with black kids of similar or better economic status.Welfare mothers, having more babies by different fathers; unemployed alcoholic men hanging out on the street with a paper bag; dropouts; shoplifting and theft and gangs. That was a stereotype I had heard used to describe life in the ghetto. That same stereotype turns out to describe perfectly the white population of the housing projects in Southie, as described by the author.Early on, I read the smattering of negative reviews. I attributed some of them to being judgmental about the people in the book, including the author’s single mother, criminal siblings, and racist neighbors. Still, I enjoyed getting the author’s perspective, as the author is writing about his experiences as a child. But, as the book progressed I found myself losing interest. First, I was having trouble keeping track of all the characters, many of whom are siblings, but many are not. I should have started a list when I began reading the book. Second, I began to feel as if I were stuck in a waiting room, forced to watch The Jerry Springer Show. I didn’t think very highly of these people when I lived in Boston, and a more intimate portrayal does not help. In fact, they’re more dysfunctional than I thought.Boston has changed (and so has Southie), but the time I lived there is chronicled in this book. It was a year that persuaded me that I fit better in Los Angeles.Bottom line: I would grab a tablet to write down the names of all the characters as they appear, open Google Maps to South Boston, at the intersection of 8th Street and Dorchester Street (not Dorchester Avenue), and the traffic circle where Old Colony meets Columbia and Preble. Rotary Liquors is what was once the HQ for Whitey Bulger’s criminal enterprise. Read the book for as long as it holds your interest. If you can get through the litany of death and disaster in the middle, the story gains an adult perspective and once again commands attention.

This deeply moving biographical novel succinctly captures the eternal and historical struggle of the integrated relationship between racism and classicism in America. The trials and tribulations of a poor, large, White Irish family living in a Boston housing project clearly reflect the exact same life experiences of other poor ethnic/racial groups trying to make it and survive in this land of promised opportunity.Although the South Boston Bulger gangster phenomenon serves as a Greek chorus to the times, this passionate family story itself totally overshadows that scourge and underscores the unending challenges, desperation, and heartache of living poor in America.Adjust the color lens and, historically, you witness how political "saviors" prey on the vulnerabilities of the innocent and uninformed...all in the name of making America great again.All Souls takes place in the late 70's when the issue of busing and desegregation dominated Boston as well as national headlines. Solid State Drives (SSDs) are gaining momentum in enterprise and client applications, replacing Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) by offering higher performance and lower power.
