From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Musicians and cat lovers alike will enjoy this charming picture book based on a true story. Moshe Cotel, a young composer, lives alone in a busy, noisy city, but "Everything he heard was music to his ears." One day he discovers Ketzel, a tiny, black-and-white kitten, on the street. He holds her tenderly to his chest and declares, "I will take you home, and we will make beautiful music together," prophetic words, to say the least. When Moshe receives a letter from the Paris New Music Review about a contest to write a composition of 60 seconds or less, try as he might, he is at a loss. Then, Ketzel creeps across the keyboard, inadvertently accomplishing what the composer could not. "Moshe grabbed a pencil and jotted down exactly what he'd heard…. 'Your composition has a clear beginning, middle, and end, is full of heart, and takes exactly 21 seconds to play. Ketzel, you're a genius!'" The feline's "Piece for Piano: Four Paws" wins an honorable mention, and its furry composer actually attends a performance. The watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations depict a busy city, a sympathetic bearded musician, and a simply adorable protagonist. VERDICT A delightful read.—Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

Review

Based on a true incident, this delightfully told story is unlikely and adorable in equal parts. Bates’ watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations feature an un-anthropomorphic kitty whose inquisitive and quizzical nature will be familiar to all cat owners. The author’s note offers all the answers readers will want. An absolute charmer!—Booklist (starred review)Newman’s great affection for her subject is evident, yet she never crosses into cutesiness or sentimentality; her reportorial tone is a perfect match for her down-to-earth, generous hero. Bates, working in hues of parchment and gold, produces some wonderfully warm vignettes, pushing the graceful realism of her watercolor, gouache, and pencil drawings just enough to add a glint of magic to a story that’s already one of a kind.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)This adorable account is as warm and fuzzy as Ketzel herself and all the sweeter because it's based on fact. The watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations suit the text perfectly, delightfully capturing Ketzel's furriness, the story's charming, lively energy, and Moshe and the "composer's" loving friendship. Truly, the cat's meow.—Kirkus ReviewsMusicians and cat lovers alike will enjoy this charming picture book based on a true story...A delightful read.—School Library JournalCharming.—The Wall Street JournalA gifted writer and illustrator join forces to craft a charming picture book based on the true story of composer Moshe Cotel and the cat who became famous for her piano composition...—The Buffalo NewsThis charming vignette is based on a true story, which encourages readers to suspend disbelief to enjoy a quirky plot and wonderful illustrations...Recommended for the picture book crowd and cat lovers of all ages.—Jewish Book World (starred review)

This delightful picture book based on a true event is the winner of the 2106 Sydney Taylor Book Award for Younger Readers.Leslea Newman tells the story of the cat who ran across the piano keys of her owner, a composer who wrote down the melody, submitted it to a contest for compositions no longer than one minute, and won Honorable Mention for it. The illustrations by Amy June Bates beautifully reflect the time period and the mood of the story.

Oh, this is a top-notch book! Children LOVE it, and it's great fun for the reader as well. A lovely story with beautifully imaginative illustrations that glorifies music and, appreciation for quietude...it's a treasure. As I and my family continue our inevitable pivot toward Orthodoxy, I have been reading more works on, you guessed it, Orthodoxy. This book, by the English theologian Timothy Ware, who as a bishop uses the baptismal name Kallistos, is a classic introduction to Orthodoxy. It was first published in 1963 but has more recently been revised, so it is fully up to date on history—and doctrine has not changed in Orthodoxy since 1963, or 963, for that matter. I’ve actually owned the book for several years, but have only now read it, having been told by several people that it is very much worth reading. And they were right—it is an excellent book.People in the modern West, even Christians, are largely ignorant of Orthodoxy. The Orthodox, to some extent at least, return the favor—Ware notes that Robert Curzon, a well-traveled English baron, in the 1830s was “disconcerted to find that the Patriarch of Constantinople had never heard of the Archbishop of Canterbury.” (He was not the Curzon who was Viceroy of India at the turn of the twentieth century and regarded as England’s greatest expert of the time on the Orient, though I imagine they were related somehow.) In the twentieth century and today, with modern communications and emigration, the Orthodox have become somewhat more prominent in the West—especially in America, where large numbers of Orthodox immigrants have established their own churches. Ware’s book is an attempt bridge the knowledge gap for Westerners. The first two-thirds of the book is a detailed and well-written history of Orthodoxy. Ware begins, naturally enough, with a definition of Orthodoxy: “the Christians who are in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.” This excludes Roman Catholics and Protestants, of course, and also the Oriental Orthodox—the Church of the East, today rabidly persecuted by Muslims in places like Syria, and the Monophysite Churches, such as the Coptic Church in Egypt. He also explains the organization of the modern Orthodox Church, which is complicated, but basically boils down to “a family of self-governing Churches,” all in communion and which, in theory, decide any disputed questions by convening in councils. There is therefore no equivalent to the Pope, something that is turning out, after all, to be a feature, not a bug.Ware discusses the seven general councils, the last one in 787, which determined the outlines of mainstream Christian beliefs. Naturally, since the Great Schism, the breach between Orthodoxy and Roman Christianity, is traditionally dated to 1054, these beliefs are shared by all Roman Catholics, and by many Protestants as well. As remembered today, the most critical issues related to the nature of God in Christian doctrine, though many other matters were also decided at these councils. For Orthodoxy, another critical matter was the treatment of icons, which are more central to worship than are images in the West. Ware identifies iconoclasm with the ever-present Gnostic temptation in Christianity to denigrate the physical world as inferior and to be superseded in ages to come, whereas Orthodox (and all correct Christian) belief is that the material world is “very good” in God’s eyes and is itself ultimately to be “redeemed and glorified.” All this was hammered out within the framework of the (Eastern) Roman empire, of which Ware and other Orthodox tend to have a highly favorable view. The traditional Western view is more negative, conditioned by Roman Catholic hostility and Edward Gibbon’s bigoted, dubious history, and tends, on a political level, to denigrate the Empire as Caesaropapist—that is, with the state dominating the church. Ware, at least, sees it as a symbiotic, cooperative, relationship, and he (along with many Orthodox, I suspect) sees Byzantium at its height as, if still far from an ideal society, the closest Christendom has gotten to one.Next Ware narrates the complex events leading up to and following the Great Schism, covering everything from the theologian Saint Photius to the Normans in Italy to the Crusades. Interesting information, particularly showing contrasts to the West, frequently crops up, such as the continued prevalence and prominence of lay theologians in the East, where the secular education system had not collapsed as it had in the West. Interspersed in this history is quite a bit of doctrinal discussion, such as details of the Hesychast Controversy, and the related distinctions made in Orthodoxy between God’s essence and energies, a topic that overlaps with the Scholastic innovation of univocity. Later chapters cover, among other matters, the conversion of the Slavs, with a long and fascinating narrative about the Orthodox in Russia, and then detailed coverage of the twentieth century, a time of trials for the Orthodox (and renewed conflict between Orthodox and Roman Catholics in the Balkans, unfortunately). Along the way, Ware also covers the precise current organizational structure of the Church (who knew that Finland was part of the Patriarchate of Constantinople?), and similar administrative matters, both in theory and practice. The Orthodox, with justification, have a dim view of the Crusades, especially the Fourth, but Ware does tend to elide important details running counter to that narrative, such as that the First Crusade (in 1095) was largely a response to a specific request for aid by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, after a series of brutal defeats at the hands of the Turks, beginning at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. In his complaints about the Crusaders, some of which are wholly legitimate, Ware even uses as fact the claim by Raymond of Argiles after the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 that “men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins.” You often hear this quote trotted out; I remember Bill Clinton doing so after September 11. Its modern use is to shift the focus from today’s Muslim atrocities to claimed thousand-year-old Christian ones, as if those were equivalent, or rather the latter far more important. Its earlier use, before the age of global Muslim terror, was to attack Roman Catholics and Christianity generally; it appears in atheist Enlightenment tracts. No doubt, as in all medieval wars, lots of people were killed by the Crusaders. But the quote itself is merely a metaphoric citation to Revelation 14:20, describing the end of the world and the slaughter by angels of the opponents of Christ, “And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the wine press, as high as a horse’s bridle, for a distance of about two hundred miles.” That is, Raymond of Argiles wasn’t puffing himself for the number of people killed, but comparing the battle to the End Times. Oddly, I have never seen this basic fact noted anywhere, though I must have seen the quote itself a hundred times. Ware also relies heavily on biased and outdated sources like Steven Runciman, which undermines what he has to say.Still, the Orthodox aversion to the Crusades is understandable. But what is less understandable is the relatively gentle touch Ware gives to Muslim conquest of the East and the subsequent destruction of most of Eastern Christianity, which seems like a much larger imposition on the Orthodox than were the Crusades. On the other hand, at least Ware quotes an Englishman visiting Constantinople in 1677, “It doth go hugely against the grain to see the crescent exalted everywhere, the Cross stood so long triumphant.” (With any luck this exaltation can be reversed in the near future; as Europe careens into a ditch, aggressive renewal is as likely an outcome as permanent decline of the West, which might provide an opportunity such as, for example, Russia returning to the excellent goal of conquering Constantinople.) Ware also notes the truism that although direct violent persecution of Christians was intermittent under Islam (though certainly frequent enough to keep the Christians in their place, and Christians were always required to be subordinate or face death), what ultimately caused most conversion to Islam was simply the financial and social benefits accruing to Muslims—martyrdom inspires, social debility does not. Moreover, it is not really the Ottomans’ fault that their system of treating religious leaders of Christians as being simultaneously ethnic leaders has led to a long history of unfortunate intertwining of the two roles among the Orthodox, as well as corruption and ethnic chauvinism among the different Orthodox churches that were under Ottoman rule (i.e., all of them, except the Russians). But the Armenian genocide rates not a word, probably because the Turks, on whose land (for now) the Ecumenical Patriarch must live, don’t want to hear about their recent slaughter of Christians. On the whole, therefore, Ware lets the Muslims off far too easy, something that seems very common among the Orthodox. In several places, Ware points out the tendency of the Orthodox toward slowness of action, of any type. This is partially organizational, the nature of conciliar decision making, and partially simply a trait that in this age of liquid modernity has so far been immeasurably beneficial (though I doubt if the Orthodox will be wholly immune to this corrosion in the wars to come—and, in fact, Ware himself was seen to be hedging his bets on homosexual “marriage” earlier this year). The downside of this is that those not fond of action are also those less likely to accomplish things, which is, perhaps, why it is the Roman Catholics of the West who made the modern world, followed by the Protestants. The introspective nature of Orthodox practice and theology, focused on unchanging ritual, does not lend itself to crusade or, perhaps, to the drive that pushes humanity forward. That begs the question, of course, whether pushing humanity forward is a good thing, or, instead, the monks of Mount Athos have the right of it. But for someone like me, who likes rockets to Mars, and beyond, the spirit of the Jesuits (the seventeenth-century ones, not today’s ones), or of Cortes, who “conquered Mexico for God, gold, and glory, and only a mundane imagination would distinguish these impulses, for they were one and the same,” is beneficial to humanity, and that is not really found among the Orthodox. Maybe there is a synthesis to be had, but I suspect that what makes the Orthodox who they are would not survive an attempt to make them more active and outward-looking.The latter third of the book is doctrine, which, like the first part, is excellent. Here various Orthodox practices that contrast with their Western analogues are noticeable, especially the emphasis on mysticism over strict rationality, and that the Orthodox are more comfortable with some degree of ambiguity, with not delineating every matter of doctrine specifically. Most differences between Orthodox and Roman Catholics are really matters of emphasis, such as Christ as victim versus Christ as victor, but Ware does an excellent job explaining the importance of certain differences that seem, at first glance, utterly obscure and unimportant, but are really not, such as the “Filoque,” the question (in the Nicene Creed) whether the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (the Orthodox position) or the Father and the Son (the Roman position, a medieval innovation). Among other subtleties, Ware notes that the Orthodox belief is that the Roman position depreciates the personal characteristics of each individual member of the Trinity (an effect similar to, though arising differently from, the abominable use of “gender-neutral” language for God). Around that explanation Ware also offers a fantastic discussion of the Trinity itself. He further discusses the importance of prayer and ritual, the rejection of Quietism, the specifics of ritual, and much more. And he notes the crucial Orthodox emphasis on theosis, the goal of divinization, of ultimate unity with God’s energies (though not His essence). He ends with a plea for reunion of Christians, something devoutly to be wished, but which looks even less likely nowadays, given the corruption of most Western Christians—though maybe the focus should not be on the West, but on the rest of the world, and what can be done there. We will see soon enough, but either way, my bet is that Orthodoxy will have a much more prominent role in the immediate future of the world than it has played in the past thousand years.

This overview of the Orthodox Church is extremely accessible and provides a thorough explanation of the Tradition and the richness of Orthodox faith. For lay members of the "western" churches, this book pulls back the veil of mystery, and the final chapter describes in wonderful detail the opportunities and obstacles for reunification of all our traditions into "one holy, catholic and apostolic Church."

This original version is the version to read. The new version is full of speculation and error, when the first version got it right. Read this one as a good introduction to the Orthodox Church, the original Christian Church.

If you are wondering about the Eastern Orthodox Church, this is THE book for you.It explains the history and dogma of this very interesting, to me, religion. The Orthodox Church is not Roman Catholicism without the Pope. This well written book explains that in great detail.I feel enlightened.Thanks.

Great Intro to the Orthodox Church and the history, both doctrinal and historical. The essence of Orthodoxy is captured in a well written and lucid text. The spirituality of the author and of the Church/Tradition/Saints spills out from many of the pages. Bishop Ware is both intellectual and spiritual, a rare combination--perhaps more rare in the West than in the East (Orthodox Church). The book is also a wonderful window into the more than a 1000 year old Byzantine Christian Empire and civilization.

This is a good survey of the faith, history and development of Eastern Christianity as it took shape among the Orthodox. It covers the early developments in Christianity through its first 8 centuries of common development and the 7 Ecumenical Councils recognized by most Christians (East and West, Catholic and Protestant) that settled basic doctrinal controversies in the Christian faith. About half the book traces the history of the Church, the East/West split, and the spread of the Orthodox faith beyond its historic centers in the eastern Mediterranean to the Balkan peninsula, eastern Europe, Russian and beyond down to shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union. It introduces many key figures who are largely unknown in the western Church. I discusses key doctrinal emphasis and practices in Orthodox Christianity and gives a sense of the more "right-brained" approach to these in the East. The Eastern approach to worship and its key elements is well covered. It written in a readable style from the perspective of an "insider" for the benefit of those who are not, as well as laity who want to know more about their own tradition. It is a good introduction for college-level study or persons interested in religion.

Nice book providing an overview of history, organization and founding beliefs of the Christian Orthodoxy. It's well written and easy to read. Also, the book is structured in a way that you can simply read only the topics that are of interest to you. I would recommend it to anyone inside and outside of the Orthodox church as a brief reference book. Also, if you already have previous edition and you're not especially interested in a brief overview of historical developments in past 20 years, there is no need to buy this new edition.

Although Attwood does use "vocabulary words," he's careful to keep his language down-to-earth and engaging. Readers who aren't quite sure what a particular term means can check the glossary in the back of the book. Author: About.comUsually, the first place I send any client for information is Tony Attwood's The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome. For parents of kids just diagnosed with Asperger's, adults who think that maybe they've always been on the autism spectrum, or autistic teens who are starting to transition into adulthood, this book is a solid place to start. I think of this book as the Asperger's equivalent to The Joy of Cooking. There are lots of specialized cookbooks out there, covering the details of Thai cuisine, or how to use a slow cooker, but the classic Joy of Cooking can get you started and point out where to go next. Attwood's The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome can get you started on just about any Asperger related issue, and show you where to go from there. Author: The Autism NewsIn 1998, Australian clinical psychologist Attwood published Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals, which quickly established him as an international expert on the condition. Here, he updates research in this rapidly evolving field, offering a wealth of information on childhood, college, long-term relationships, and careers. He gives comprehensive coverage of topics such as friendship, bullying, special interests, and theory of mind. Each chapter begins with a quote from Hans Asperger himself and includes firsthand experiences from individuals with Asperger's, including Temple Grandin, Liane Holliday Willey, and Stephen Shore. Particularly helpful are the "Key Points and Strategies" at each chapter's end and the detailed FAQs, glossary, resources, and references sections. Attwood writes, "I usually say to the child, `Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome,' and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking." His work skillfully brings together the current information on this fascinating condition and is an essential purchase for academic and public libraries. Author: Library Journal

I have felt "different" my whole life and have frequently described myself as an alien. I had heard of Asperger's before, but every description of it I heard or read was brief and focused on only a few traits of the condition and cases that were moderate to severe. I was totally unaware of the long list of more subtle traits such as sensory sensitivity, stimming, and that not everyone with AS is totally blind to non-verbal social cues. There is remarkable variability among those with AS, and every individual trait exists on a spectrum or may be expressed in different ways, and some traits may not be present at all. Tony Attwood's book went into far more detail than anything I found online and was based more on his 40 years of experience actually working with and getting to know and understand Aspies than the few bullet points of the DSM. I found his book to be incredibly insightful and an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to understand the condition. I repeatedly saw myself in his descriptions and was shocked and excited to sometimes even see specific words or phrases I had used myself (having trouble with "the system" for example). The Complete Guide to AS helped me immensely in understanding myself, why I am so different, and how I can better succeed in life and have positive relationships. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about the condition and cannot thank Dr. Attwood enough for producing such a book an sharing his expertise. Thank you!

I've read a lot of books since our diagnosis for our son, and this one did the best job. He can write for a parent to understand the syndrome, and most importantly to understand how your kid THINKS. Because they don't think like you do. That doesn't make them bad, or wrong, just different enough to need a translator. If your kid is lucky you'll stumble upon this book and learn about how your kid sees the world: what they notice, what they don't, what makes sense to them, and what doesn't.It's a guidebook for those who love Aspies and want to help navigate them through life without shaming them, or making them feel bad about how they were born. My kid is much happier with a family who understands him and can help him make connections and who can intelligently explain how he's different to other people who haven't read this book. God bless Tony Attwood.I buy this again and again to give away. It's that important.

I don't feel Theory of Mind adequately or fairly describes what is really going on with Aspergers. Certainly there are social difficulties, but to say that people with Aspergers, especially adults, don't understand that other people have minds and emotions is just untrue, and that's what the most rigid proponents of Theory of Mind are still trying to assert. Proponents of Theory of Mind may even assert the person with Aspergers lacks emotions or caring. While I don't feel this author is going to these extremes, enough of the proponents of Theory of Mind have done so in a way that is deeply flawed and discriminatory against people with Aspergers. Including ToM in this book dilutes what is otherwise a very compassionate tone.Learning how to improve social abilities can only be possible for people who do, in fact, realize that they and other people have varied thoughts and emotions. What people with Aspergers have trouble with is intuiting social communication, but that can happen to anyone in specific situations - such as traveling to a very different culture. I would have felt this book was much stronger if the author took the time to acknowledge there is debate around this issue in the community.

It is wonderful to know that I am not mad. That I am just uncoordinated and not trying to hurt myself. That my escape into imagination doesn't mean that I am insane. This book explained all the things I just couldn't understand about who I am. It also explained why other people respond to me the way they do. My mother didn't reject me, she thought it was her fault I was different. And now I understand that I don't have to be afraid all the time. There is lots more to read and take on board. I wish my parents had known about this book when I was young. Thank you Tony Attwood for writing this book.

I read this book in two days flat. It's a full sized textbook type of book (and anyone who has gone to college knows that textbooks can sell for up to and over $100 - this has as much info as a textbook IMO but at under $20 is just an absolute steal) but I couldn't put it down. This truly should be required reading for anyone with Asperger's, anyone with a familyl member with Asperger's, anyone who ever thinks they might ever know someone who might have Asperger's, and certainly every single psychologist and teacher, social worker and child care provider should take the time to read. I would say this was the single most important item I have read or viewed among a sea of information on the internet, in TED Talks, on television, etc. I cannot possibly recommend it enough. I highlighted the things which I related to, and/or which I found particularly enlightening and when I was done I realized that quite literally more than 85% of the book is covered in yellow highlighter. It is just that good. Don't waffle on this purchase, just do it. I can't imagine anyone regretting it. The author could probably offer a money back guarantee and never shell out a dime, it's that good.

I was recently diagnosed with ASD, and bought 3 copies of this book to loan to friends/family as I slowly tell them of my diagnosis. I've read many different books on autism/asperger's, and this is by far the best. Tony Attwood explains the condition in a way that is easy to understand and approachable even for non-experts or people who had never heard of the condition before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is recently diagnosed, thinks they might have it, has friends or family on the spectrum, or is just interested in it and wants to learn more about it.

I think I have a new favorite writer. While not overtly Christian, this book is loving, realistic, and truthful without being sensational or sappy, and, thankfully, without the trend of foul language, which I am greatly disturbed by. I loved the characters, and the elements about how families interact and deal with each other. Betsy stole my heart, as I feel I am most like her, and yet always wished I was more like Jenna. I loved this story and wish Ms. Denton would write a sequel!

Ms. Denton has written another moving, beautiful book. This book was impossible to put down. For me, it was a wonderful break from the harsh realities of today. If you enjoy reading for pure pleasure, don't pass this one up.

It is an even story about a relationship between two sisters who love each other but are not as close as they both would like to be. Through the course of one summer, they get to know each other better and find that the preconceived notions they each had about the other was not really the case. In some ways the story was predictable, however I enjoyed the different settings and the character developments.

I really enjoyed Lauren Denton’s first novel, The Hideaway, so I thought I would try this one. It surpassed The Hideaway in so many ways, always keeping me guessing, hoping and wondering what would happen for these two sisters and their families...which choices they would make. Both novels are good, clean, interesting and fun stories. They got me laughing and tearing up - occasionally both at one time. Unlike The Hideaway, which wrapped up fairly nicely, Hurricane Season left me wanting a sequel so I could find out what happens after this novel stops. I hope she will write one!

Lauren K. Denton is my favorite new author. I loved, loved, loved The Hideaway, and the Hurricane Season is just as wonderful. The characters are described and developed so that you grew along with their day to day life and their hopes and dreams. I felt like I knew the characters as if they were right beside me. And the Hurricane hit me as much as it did Alabama, I got so involved with the story, I actually felt the hurricane reports were for my area. I know, sounds like I might have been drinking something. but her writing is so vivid I felt like I was transported to Alabama. Thank you Ms. Denton for another great book. Please, keep up the good work.

Two rocky relationships come to a climax in this novel--between two sisters and between a husband and wife. While the younger, freer-in-spirit sister Jenna pursues one of her dreams, the older sister and her husband, a farmer, care for the younger sister's two girls. Since Betsy, the older sister, and her husband Ty have not been able to have children of their own, there are emotional issues needing resolution. Meanwhile Jenna is exploring another male relationship and must make a difficult choice. The hurricane which blows through southern Alabama where the farm is located is a symbol of the turmoil in the various characters' lives. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in sister relationships, southern settings in literature, exploring the issue of infertility, and raising little girls on a farm. The pure joy of the city girls discovering the miracles of life on a farm was enjoyable. Devon O'Day skillfully read the MP3 CD version to which I listened.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. This is a sweet, quiet #grownupreads novel set in the south. Amid fertility struggles and an impending hurricane in Alabama, Ty and Betsy are struggling to connect like they did in the past. Jenna, Betsy’s sister, feels like her life is off track - she is raising two daughters on her own while working in a coffeehouse. She wants to find herself, and when she is offered a spot at an artists’ retreat, she sees a chance to really find her passion again. She asks her sister to watch her kids, and while the retreat keeps stretching longer than originally expected, Betsy and Ty find their world turned upside down in new ways, both wonderful and difficult. I found myself skipping over Jenna’s parts, but overall this one kept me awake during middle of the night feeds.

I really enjoyed the characters and can I say, story. So many people end up guessing what others think as the years thunder by without knowing the truths. I know too many people who just have closed up or off. The hurt mostly themselves, but also their children and siblings. Denton is excellent at creating a visual, palpable background of places and people without TOO much of a narrative,. Some authors can feel condescending over describing or soupy. until OK we get it, This was fresh and interesting

Great book by a superb writer and thinker. A must read for anyone who wants to do more than pretend to be a Christian.

Dietrich Bonheoffer is a deeply spiritual man who lived what he spoke. He also wrote the Cost of Discipleship which is wonderful read and I go back and read it again, often. The translation process may be a little difficult for some to read Ethics but it is really worth the read. Don't plan to hurry through this book; you will probably want to meditate on many of his thoughts. I am very thankful for this man and for the life that he lived.

Content 5++ stars. This is vintage Bonhoeffer: insightful, challenging, thought provoking. Highly recommend this. The Fortress Works of Bonhoeffer far and away the best editions. There is lot of material here about the background and ordering (as it was unfinished at Bonhoeffer's death). A gold mine. Nearly 600 pages, so not a small book.Took away one star for the poor quality binding and paper (expect more from Fortress - their NT Wright volumes are bound to last 100 years). For a paperback that is this expensive, you expect better quality paper, at least you expect WHITE paper! The paper is coarse, yellow and not inviting at all. The kindle edition are also hampered by poor formatting. This is sad as excellent electronic versions are available from a major Bible study company (think word...).Overall- Content is EXCELLENT- Binding is not likely to last prolonged use (bound like a pulp fiction not an enduring classic it is)- kindle edition is annoying - use a better electronic edition.

This is a great work by Bonhoeffer that I purchased for a paper, but will likely dig into for pleasure reading soon. It has compelling arguments and keeps me thinking.

What can you say - it's Bonfoeffer. It is a must read for clergy and anyone interested in Ethics - specifically Christian Ethics.

This is a great book that details how difficult it is to be ethical in a corrupt world.

Even for a textbook this was hard to read... but that's just Bonhoeffer so there's not much to do about it.

Great insight concerning true biblical ethics. Bonhoeffer does not just share theology but practical knowledge to be applied to daily living.

In her light-hearted, personable way, Creativity Coach Bridget Whelan guides the beginning writer through a series of exercises meant to spark creativity. She provides useful tips, relevant examples and specific exercises to prompt creative writing. The information is credible and easy to follow and her writing is engaging, witty and concise.Because she addresses a wide range of topics-- writing descriptions, humor, horror--this book appeals to writers of all genres and all experience levels. I found her voice to be trustworthy and down-to-earth and her book to be packed with practical tips and prompts. Here is an excerpt from the chapter, "Descriptions That Multitask":" You are the reader's eyes and ears; you are their skin, their nostrils, their mouth. You can't tell everything so the few details you reveal have to reinforce the atmosphere of the story or add to the development of a character or contribute in some way to the reader's understanding."She then provides a detailed writing prompt with instructions and questions to stimulate your imagination. The book is divided into three terms, much like a semester course would be with chapter titles such as, "Become a Cliché Killer, Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid, No One Gets Tired of Once Upon a Time."This writing guidebook is inspiring, funny and insightful. At the end, she provides a practical step-by-step approach to writing book reviews for fiction and nonfiction. She leaves us with her best advice: "Write as much as you can about anything; Read as much as you can about anything." She also provides a list of writing resources with her description on how they may be helpful.I highly recommend this witty and informative writing guidebook for writers of all genres and all experience levels who are looking to break through the blank page to find their voice.

I have published one non-fiction book (so far) on a topic I knew very well so it wasn't difficult. I'n now considering a foray into fiction but definitely consider myself a beginner. Bridget Whelan is clearly passionate about writing and teaching and does so in a caring manner. She provides a wealth of knowledge with exercises to help develop each skill. My frustration is that this is not a freshman level writing class. I found myself getting lost in all the large words and difficult exercises which is really an indictment of myself, not of her or her book. I say this only to warn those who are considering buying it if you are a newbie this isn't the book for you. Less than half the way through it I became discouraged about how much I don't know and it tended to take the wing out of my sail. Start with lighter fare but remember this one for the future.

I enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me of my writing courses in college. The instructors gave us some assignments similar to the ones in this book. But, I would've liked to have tried new ones offered in this text. The author sounded like a kewl and approachable college writing professor. Some of my former professors were like the author; while others looked down on us students, hardly assisted us; etc.

This book gave me some really good tips and it was fun to read and do the "lessons"'

Just what I needed to get my mind working on writing. A must read if you're stuck and need a prompt to bring the words out of you and onto the page.

Fresh. Fun. Doesn't feel like school...or work. Cut loose and play with words, images, language.

Great book! My high school creative writing class is really enjoying the process of developing all the elements (characters, conflict, etc.) of their stories. This book breaks it down and gives them the confidence to be creative.

Very good info..for a beginner writer.
