This is an exquisitely written story of a loving, middle-class family’s once idyllic life in Kabul, Afghanistan, collapsing beneath Soviet rockets and later crumbling under despotism by the Taliban. In first person, the story described how Fereiba Waziri, pregnant with her third child, lost her husband, Mahmood.Fereiba had known loss all of her life, but with the loss of her husband, and her personal histories with loss, she was limited in her coping capabilities. Although hesitant and fearful, she realized she had to pick up the pieces of her life, and go on without Mahmood.Mahmood was a freethinker in their society. He and Fereiba had solidified their marriage with profound love and trust, openly discussing everything. Yet, Fereiba always respected Mahmood’s final decision in matters. However, she later regretted they had not moved to London earlier and, sometimes, I think, she made ill-considered decisions.Fereiba and the children were vulnerable and immersed in their grief. Although grieving, she had to remain calm and clear headed in front of the children. Her daughter, Samira, became mute, lacking the verbal ability to explain what troubled her. Her son, Saleem, at fifteen, was at the age where he was unwilling to share his problems with others. Inside, he mourned his father’s death. He felt confused, had ambivalent attitudes concerning his brother and anger towards his mother.Fereiba had to relearn the world without her husband. She fled with her children and infant son, Aziz, to safe houses in Iran before landing in Turkey.Saleem’s story is told in omniscient point of view. This is really Saleem’s story. Proud, and strong-willed, he refused to keel over to pity. His dreams became deferred. He had to mature quickly without the guidance of his father. He discovered the dismal gloom of Afghan refugees in Athens. At night, males in their teens and twenties, slept in a park under makeshift tents. During the day, they scrounged for food from restaurants’ refuse or received sandwiches from aide workers. Refugees could not obtain asylum. They could not acquire jobs. Like Saleem’s family, they too wanted asylum in Europe and feared forced repatriation.When the Waziri’s had saved enough to reach Italy, Saleem and his mother were separated two days before their departure. He was arrested by police and returned to Turkey. Fereiba, faced with her deathly ill infant, realized she had to leave without Saleem.Several weeks later, alone, Saleem reached Italy, and became acquainted with the dark, purgatorial, underbelly society of Rome with its unforgiving, hardened criminals. Yet, he would not give up his dream of reuniting with his family. So, he made brave decisions a boy should not have to make at his age. But he was between adolescence and adulthood. He would survive.I enjoyed the story immensely. I gave it five stars.

If you enjoy the writing of Khaled Hosseini, I think you will also appreciate both of Nadia Hashimi's novels. I loved When The Moon Is Low. It is an emotional journey about love of family, freedom and country. It explores the limits of personal strength and determination as well as the bonds between parent and child. I did not want it to end. My only criticism is one that I am finding in many books lately. SPOILER AHEADBy the end of the book you are hoping for the emotional payoff which does not really come because the conclusion of the story is left to the reader's imagination rather than played out. That said, and questionable title aside, this was a very enjoyable book, one I highly recommend.

The story read well and held interest; however, the ending was a real letdown. Gave much information about customs, reasons for their travels and hardships when trying to relocate. It was as though the writer just put down her pen and stopped. I was very disappointed not knowing how each fared after their travels. Did not like to be left with the door shut in my face.

Was patiently waiting for the release of this book as her first novel I couldn't put it down. This started out with a bang for me and fizzled out a little about 3/4 of the way through. I did skip through towards the end and finally finished only to be left shacking my head. I would give it 3 1/2 stars and not a complete wast of my time but certainly not a favorite.

This story is simply told, in the voices of Fareiba, and her son Saleem as they leave a troubled Afghanistan for a better life in London. The story traces Fareiba's difficult life first as a motherless child, and later as a widow with three children compelled to leave her country after her husband is killed. Saleem's voice join in as the family begins its move. The story is heart wrenching, yet the characters too engrossing to make the reader easily put the book down. The kindness shown by strangers occasionally sweetens the bitter deal that life has dealt the family, and shows that there are decent people around. The story is topical, and gives a refugee's perspective on the current crisis making global headlines.

This was a selection for my reading group. I was really looking forward to it, as our group had read "The Pearl That Broke Its Shell" by the same author previously. I enjoyed the book and was emotionally unnerved by the treacherous journey that refugees were forced to traverse in order to flee Afghanistan. I can't even imagine putting my children into such a situation as was forced upon the Waziri family. The author did a good job of developing the characters and using the separate voices of Fereiba and Saleem. Even though I enjoyed it, I don't really consider it a book that I would term asmemorable. My litmus test of a memorable book is that it keeps me awake at night thinking about it and pondering the characters and story lines. Perhaps in my mind, I am comparing it to how I felt reading the works of Khaled Houssini and this book didn't compel me like Houssini's works did. I would recommend it for those who love literary fiction or Middle East fiction.

A gift for adults learning English as a second language; teaches concept of opposites, and the concept of camping in the woods, and is gently humorous. Words even adults would use if vacationing here.

Earlier, I commented on the review that described this book as "not likely to entertain even the smallest child." I've since purchased this book for our two-year-old boy. He loves it, as he does the first Fred and Ted one.When reading, he learns about camping equipment, colors, actions, relationships, and more. Although he was just beginning to understand the concept of "pretend play," he could easily understand that our boat was like Fred's and Ted's boat and we could pretend to paddle.As another reviewer implied, the point isn't really whether or not we adults like it. It's whether or not our kids benefit from it. Obviously, kids have different tastes. Our guy has no interest in some books/toys about which other parents rave, no matter how hard I try to make them engaging. That's just him. He does like this book, however, as do I.

my kids love to camp o I read them this to get them in the camping mood.

A great addition to our toddler's library. He got a tent for Christmas and we got this to go with it. He enjoys the camping storyline, while learning a lot of opposites.

When I received the book, the corner was torn a little bit. I am using it for my son's first birthday party (camping theme) so that people can write little notes in it for him. I do not really care that the corner was torn because I know my son will just end up tearing it up anyway probably and it makes it look like I've had the book for a little while. Super cute book though!

Fun to read great story!

My son loves outdoors and camping, and he loves this book (at ages 2/3, he also laughs out loud at the ending pages). The pictures are cute, accessible, and humorous. The characters are engaging enough and it's a quick read (when you're reading it for the 200th time!). It helps illustrate the concept of opposites, and sharing in camping and outdoor activity at a beginner reading level, I think this is a good addition to our library.

Bought this for our first camping trip and my 3 year old LOVED it!

I just started reading the new book by drummer Kenny Aronoff, "Sex, Drums, Rock 'n' Roll: The Hardest Hitting Man in Show Business," which Kenny definitely is. He's a tremendous drummer, has played with just about everybody, and hails from my old stomping grounds of Indiana University. (In fact, he used to play with some pals of mine in a jazz-fusion group called Streamwinner, which gets a few shout outs in the book.)My favorite story from Kenny's new book concerns his first recording with John Cougar Mellencamp, the "Nothing Matters and What If It Did" album. Kenny had only recently joined the band, and was used to playing very busy jazz rock fusion on a big kit. (That's how I initially heard him back in Bloomington -- he was a monster!) Anyway, the band flies out to LA to record with legendary producer Steve Cropper (of Stax Records fame), and it was Kenny's first time in a big-time LA recording studio. Unfortunately, Cropper only had a limited time to record the album, and Kenny just wasn't cutting it. So they "fired" Kenny from the recordings and brought in session drummers Ed Greene and Rick Shlosser to cut the rhythm tracks.Instead of getting all pissed off like anyone else would have, Kenny took this as a humbling and a learning experience. He begged Mellencamp to let him stay in LA (they were going to fly him home) and attend the recording sessions as a fly on the wall, which he did. Kenny learned a ton from the session pros and applied it to his own style going forward, turning a negative experience into a positive one.I don't know too many other musicians who would have sucked it up and taken it the way Kenny did in that situation. This solidifies my opinion of Kenny has not just a great drummer but a true stand up guy and role model. (FWIW, I interviewed Kenny for my Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing Drums book, and he was a joy and an inspiration to talk to. As busy as he is, I'm glad he found the time to talk to me!)In any case, if you want an inside look at the music business from a legendary drummer's point of view, check out Kenny's book. It's a good read!

This book is incredible so far, and Kenny's stories are a lot of fun to read through!! He goes into great detail about his time with Mellencamp, and gives a unique perspective into what it means to be a session player. Kenny is probably the most qualified drummer to give that perspective, and the book proves it!I say "so far" up above because the publisher has REALLY screwed something up: pages 213-260 are missing and 261-308 are repeated! This makes the book an incomplete product, and obviously, not worth the full price. I have not sought a refund yet, but intend to do so.I would still recommend buying the book, but maybe give the publisher a call first to see if they fixed the problem. I ordered this in the fall of 2016, so maybe they have addressed the issue by now.

I read a ton of musician books and this one is up there. Well written, exciting and you do not want to put it down. When I heard John Cougar as a teen I was immediately drawn to the drum sound. Very few people understand how important a drummer is and how it’s the backbone of the band, music and sound. Kenny had the it factor back then, despite the Friar Tuck hairdo he had going on you could tell he had the IT factor and stood out. Really it was John Mellancamp and him that were the band and the vibe.I doubt no one has been on more albums, songs, hits, gold records than Kenny. Chances are most people do not know him but I can guarantee they have heard a song he played on.Look at Jack and Diane or Hurts so good, sound simple but its not, each beat, sound, drum has a place and its perfect. Like the stones, you do not focus on Charlie Watts but without him you probably would not even listen to the Stones as they would be nothing.Kenny is the backbone and soul to so many hits. He is my pick for my next solo album!

As a musician and a lover of drums, Mr. Aronoff has given this reader a rare window on how much discipline and motivation it takes to literally master this incredible instrument. This is a true musical history which starts in the womb where Kenny heard his twin brother Jonathan's heartbeat. It left an imprint. His relationship with his family is a loving one. They provided him with a platform and encouraged him to play. In truth, they could not get him to stop. He learned by sheer determination. It was when he first saw Ringo Starr that he knew the sounds of rhythm would be his calling. While reading I was fascinated by how he believed a band should be formed like a team. Like his family. Good drummers are very hard to find. When he first auditioned for John Cougar Mellencamp. However, Mellencamp did not think he was the right drummer for the band. He soon found out otherwise. He played on John's best recordings while he and bassist Toby Myers played amazingly together. A brilliant team.When he left the Mellencamp band he soon got calls from everyone. In my opinion, the more simplistic (Mellencamp) a tune is, the harder it is to play. Especially, to keep the sound and beat in the pocket. Kenny, I could say is the Mozart of drum playing. He can play anything. As a student at UMass he played classical percussion and of course tympani's. While playing with an orchestra it is valuable to count out the rhythm with precision. Kenny's big mistake was that he came in at the wrong time which left him humbled and embarrassed in front of his peers. A lesson learned but a valuable one. He later went to Indiana University, Bloomington and the rest is musical history. I will not tell you everyone he has played with because you wannabe drummers or lovers of other instruments need to read this.Not only is he a highly disciplined player, like above he is a humble one. If you are into sleazy autobiographies on rock stars this is not for you. Kenny is a musician's musician. And he has shown it by giving lessons to students while recording with Mellencamp and being creative with his art. I was also fascinated how much he loved Bloomington. And how he described it. A young boy who idolized Ringo Starr from the East Coast ends up in the heart of the United States, Indiana, and becomes one of the most famous, versatile drummers of all time. What made me teary eyed was when he was granted his childhood wish to play with Ringo Starr. He is so versatile that he has played rock, country, jazz and symphony. He is an unbelievable and rare artist and from what I read a very kind and giving man.Neil Peart in the Forward said it best: "Hold on to that thought for when you get to John Mellencamp's acid comment about Kenny and his "ambition." As if there is something wrong about wanting to play with everybody in the world--and then doing it. As Dizzy Dean said, "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up. Kenny Aronoff can back it up."

About the Author

Patricia Weaver is a parent of a son with autism. Her dual degrees in Biology and Health Sciences with a certification as a Physician’s Assistant were a strong foundation for her additional training in the Lovaas method of ABA and the Greenspan Floortime methodology. She acquired additional training in TEACCH and PECS during her employment as a teacher and specialist. She has over 20 years of experience working with persons with Autism including in the Henrico County school system; as past president of the Autism Society of America, Central VA Chapter; and as four years as the Director of Tuckahoe Little League Challenger Division. Additionally, she is one of the co-founders and president of the Skills Development Center (SDC), a non-profit organization dedicated to the continued learning and self-empowerment of adults over 18 with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her passion is her current job as the Program Director of the SDC, working with these adults as they continue to learn skills, explore and develop talents and help them connect with their peers in a facilitated recreation center. This book blew me away! This is a huge, heavy book and the photographs are anchored in a global environmental framework!Coupled with the maps and text, David teaches us to see the souls of these creatures.Like learning to see all over again!

Absolutely amazing. We learned of Mr. Yarrow and his book at Wonders of Wildlife, at the Bass Pro Shop in Springfield, MO, where they have several of these photos printed incredibly large, hanging on the walls. We are thankful to have this book and the amazing images of nature Mr. Yarrow captured... they show the amazing beauty of God's Creation... lions, tigers, bears, pandas, elephants, giraffes... and people, too... and this supports Tusk and their conservation effort. Definitely valuable! Thank you.

I love this book and always keep it open on my dinning room table.... a different picture every day. My grandchildren want to choose when they are over for dinner or a swim.I saw some of these photos at a gallery in Dallas and the book is a second best if you can not have the real thing. "In real life" they are huge and even more impressive.

This is a truly stunning collection of photographs--one of the most amazing photography books I have ever seen. The large format adds to the impressive quality. If you purchase only one book of photography this year, this is the one to get.

This book is full of beatutiful pictures and is a great read. This is one awesome coffee table book, that everyone will want to pick and look at the pictures. Really beautiful.

If you've been diagnosed with lyme disease in the United States, it's likely that you will have to fight to get the right treatment. Knowledge is your best defense, so protect yourself by reading this book.It is a better resource than the mess of online articles and panicking people on lyme boards, and it's not hard for me to say that if you read it, you'll know a LOT more than your current doctor.I was very lucky to have it recommended to me, and it was invaluable for getting the right antibiotics. I'm so much better than I was, it feels like a miracle.It's not long, or a hard read, and although it's older, it has all the information on the bacteria, it's stages, and current antibiotic options. Online videos and internet searches for doctors are a helpful resource supplement. Good luck, I wish you the best of health.

While tent-camping on 5/2/09, my husband woke up with a tick embedded on his right arm. Now, we were in south central Texas and I know ticks are fairly common, but I also know they can carry Lyme disease and other "bugs" that aren't good for humans. I'm a nurse, but my skills for tick removal were long ago and far away. I said to my husband, "I sure could use my laptop right now". But, what DID I have with me??? I had my Kindle2!! I did a search for "ticks" and found this book and downloaded the sample. From that sample and the published table of contents, I could see the book had everything in it we needed, from identifying the bugger, to telling exactly how to remove it and how to "save" it so it could be tested. I purchased the book and within minutes, I was able to use the tweezers from my makeup bag to remove the entire tick! We placed the tick on a piece of scotch tape, folded it over to "seal" it in and we took the "saved" tick to the State Park Ranger station to let them know. They gave us the info we needed to mail the tick for "FREE" identification and testing to see what if anything it may have been carrying!Thank you so much for making what could have been a very scary day, something alot less traumatic. No results on the tick yet, but will post them when they arrive!! Thanks again!****UPDATE****6/19/2010 So sorry for the extreme lag time w/this update, but the tick was negative! Thank goodness. First, if you are looking up Lyme disease information, I'm terribly sorry for your diagnosis. But, the good news is that this book is comprehensive and very easy to read. I read it front to back and found it informative.

I have had Lyme for a number of years and this book still taught me an enormous amount about Lyme. I recommend this to everyone. Chances are you or someone you love may be living a sad existence and not ever even looked into Lyme. Like so many others my Dr said I was cured with 3 weeks of antibiotics. Reading so many other stories & facts has helped me immensely

I bought this book after a friend was diagnosed with Lyme disease. She found it helpful and reassuring about many aspects of how to understand and deal with this possibly debilitating disease.
