I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and I am so glad I did. Memorable characters especially the grandmother and grandson. The mystery that was at the heart of the story kept me interested as did the backdrop of running moonshine but the characters made me sorry for the story to end. 5 stars for me.

It is very refreshing to discover a contemporary writer like Taylor Brown who writes an original story that doesn't read like a "cookie cutter" novel with superheros and predictable story lines and the same old, tired "good guys always win " ending. I liked this book so well I bought another Taylor Brown book.

If you like Pollock, Gay, or Woodrell this is the novel for you. High tragedy meets utter hilarity. I laughed so hard I about you know what. Character driven. Granny May Docherty is one of strongest female characters I have ever met. Gorgeous prose and fantastic dialogue. It would make a great film although I cannot think of an actor who could meet the challenge of Granny May.Thank you Taylor Brown.

With Gods of Howl Mountain, Brown has given us a book that is right up my alley. It’s got granny women, moonshine, revenuers, moonshine runners, early stock car racing (with an appearance by Junior Johnson), end-of-the-road roadhouses, snake handlers, and an entire valley lost to the hillbillies so a dam can power the mills where the former farmers work for another man. All nestled up in the mountains of northwest North Carolina where heading to civilization means Boone or Wilkesboro. And all described by Brown with prose that is beautiful and powerful without being inaccessible or overly literary. The prose reminds me a lot of another great country noir that I will be talking about in the nearish future, Bearskin by James McLaughlin; more so than, say, Daniel Woodrell or especially Cormac McCarthy.Rory came back from Korea with a wooden leg and a job waiting on him—running moonshine for Eustace, local king of Howl Mountain. As the story opens, Rory’s life has a certain rhythm to it: living with his granny (who sells mountain remedies to the community), making late night moonshine runs, working on his car with his buddy Eli, and driving his granny to Raleigh once a week to see his mama. Events start to spin out of his control to a bloody collision when Granny May gets on the wrong side of rival moonshiner Cooley Muldoon, Rory wanders into a gas station-turned-church and spots the snake-handling preacher’s daughter, and a new revenuer shows up in town. The events set into motion will finally uncover the truth, or at least part of it, as to what happened to Rory’s parents. Three men set upon the young couple. One of those men lost his life, Rory’s father lost his life, and his mama lost her voice. All of this was against the backdrop of the violence surrounding the flooding of the valley.“The valley people fought. There had been government trucks turned over and set alight, and trees spiked against the loggers’ saws, and dozers and tractors driven into the river, where they sat strange and fossil-like as the waters frothed over their wheels and buckets and blades. Loggers had to be brought in from out of state to clear the land, and they were jumped and beaten when they moseyed down side-trails for a piss or left their worksites for the night, in the parking lots of the honky-tonks and nip-joints that edged the valley. They were beaten with hickory clubs and ax-handles, with stones and bricks and steel-toed boots. There was talk of this becoming a second Whiskey Rebellion, like the one of the 1790s, when George Washington trotted out a federal militia of fifteen thousand men to suppress insurrectionists in western Pennsylvania. There was talk of the national guard being brought in, as they were for the Battle of Blair Mountain in ’21, when an army of miners in red neckerchiefs rose up against strikebreakers in West Virginia. Rednecks. When war-surplus bombs were dropped by hand from hired aircraft and air corps bombers out of Maryland flew reconnaissance patrols up and down the hollers. But in the end it was not the army that poured into this valley but nightriders with hoods and torches, dark wings of them that swept through the trees like some herald of the coming flood. They fired homesteads and hanged rousers, dynamited stills and threatened women and girls. In a matter of days, the will of the valley was broken. The clearing crews worked unabated, and the river rose bubbling through the land like a flood of old, dark and inexorable as blood from a wound. The valley was drowned.”I have to love any book that name drops Blair Mountain. This is the second country noir book, by the way, I’ve read that features a valley being flooded for hydroelectric (the other is Ron Rash’s wonderful debut novel, One Foot in Eden). The flooded valley left Eustace in control of the local moonshine trade. He rules his mountain like a king, or a god.“Eustace had stills scattered all across the mountain, in gullies and coves and laurel slicks. They were run by a small army of old men with gnarled hands and bent backs, many disfigured by war or logging accidents or lovers’ squabbles. Their silence was legendary. They’d farmed rock-ridden hillsides, or tried, and fought Germans with bayonets and trench guns in hells of mud. They’d cut whole mountains to stumps for Northern timber barons, blasted rock and driven spikes for narrow-gauge lines. Then in the 1920s the timber ran scarce and the camps folded. Dry flumes laced the mountains like abandoned amusement rides, and there was no work. They would have to move west to work in the coal mines, scurrying underground like the Welsh sappers they knew in the war, carting out the black rubble of prehistoric swamps to fuel cities they would never see. That or down into the brick prisons of the mills, the heat and lint and machine-gun rattle. A choice of black lung or white, each contracted beneath the shoddy suns of electric bulbs. Then came Eustace, who gave them the moon.”Eustace isn’t the sort of man to back down from a revenuer, no matter what his reputation, and he isn’t the sort of man to let the corrupt Sheriff change the deal on him. There will be consequences. There is a lot to love about Howl Mountain. It has just about everything I could ask for out of a country noir novel and still manages to be greater than the sum of its parts. The writing is danged fine, but it doesn’t get in the way of what is unapologetically a gritty, pulpy crime story. The plot manages to come off as both inexorable and shocking. It’s a love story to the hillbilly car culture that would birth NASCAR. Brown is a coastal boy but you wouldn’t know it without looking him up. The banter between Rory and Eli is a particularly highlight.I could have used less granny sex, though. Seriously, the closest thing I can muster to a real complaint is that Brown is trying a little too hard with Granny May.Brown has jumped straight into my upper echelon of country noir writers, and I can’t wait to dive into his backlist.

This guy is an amazing writer! Fallen Land is one of the best novels I've ever read (comparable to McCarthy's Border Trilogy). Gods of Howl Mountain, Country Dark, and In the Season of Blood and Gold (short story collection), all are five star reads. I felt he stumbled a bit on River of Kings, but his latest efforts are nothing short of brilliant.

Novel set in the Appalachians in 52This Author has a deep knowledge of the mountains and the people that live there.Well fleshed out characters. One of the best I found lately

This book was pretty good. I was intrigued at first, but it was really slow through the majority. Picks up at the end, but a little too slow overall for me.

Well developed and believable characters. Good picture of how people struggle and even prosper in Appalachia. "Granny" is the mover and shaker driving events--even if most of the men in the story are not aware of it.

It is hard to imagine another book being published about the Wilcox Tragedy on Denali, which happened 47 years ago. Four books have already been written about the disaster to date--the last came out in 2012--and was penned by me.My brother Bill Babcock, was the leader of what would become the rescue team. He had invited me along for the ride the previous fall of '66. I was then living on the East coast and attending college in Maine. The Mountaineering Club of Alaska had asked Bill to lead an expedition (the 53rd), which by chance trailed a week behind the Wilcox team. Both teams used the standard Muldrow Glacier / Karstens Ridge approach on the North side of Mount McKinley. When the worst storm in Denali's history exploded on top, our team was positioned to assist the five survivors, and to search the upper slopes and hopefully find the 7 missing climbers. At 19, I was not only the youngest and least experienced member of our group. I was also terrified by what lay ahead for our group.Andy Hall, whose father was Park Superintendent at the time has given us another version of this sad story, which he calls 'Denali's Howl.' Andy was five and living with his family in the park when the event took place in the summer of 1967. George Hall was Andy's father.Andy's book offers readers a carefully researched and thoroughly engrossing account of one of North American mountaineering's most controversial and heart-rendering stories. HIs narrative offers many varied and personal accounts of what happened, and he paints a vivid picture of each of the men on the 12-man Wilcox team. As I read Andy's descriptions I found myself changing some of my impressions of the climbers I met so many years ago.I also found Andy's description of Blaine Smith's 1997 ordeal on the upper slopes above Denali Pass enthralling--and very similar to what happened to my eight-person team on the South side of the mountain in 1977. Unless you have been caught out in the open during a frigid high altitude mountain storm, with winds of hurricane force, it is difficult to appreciate the thin line that truly exists between life and death. Andy describes this sheer terror with all the skill of a gifted writer. If you can't find shelter in such circumstances, you will most likely die in a very short span of time.'Denali's Howl' is a wonderful book, extremely well-written, well-documented, and a classic rendering of one of mountaineering's most terrifying tragedies.Jeff BabcockAuthor, 'Should I Not Return'[[ASIN:1594332703 Should I Not Return]

This book was recently the subject of an Anchorage Daily News article, which also provided a short excerpt. I downloaded a sample on my Kindle and was immediately mesmerized by the tragic story of twelve young men climbing Denali. The story is forceful and weighty, and other reviews describe its content well; I want to address the author's talent in his presentation of of being in the worst place at the worst time. Mr. Hall's unflinching account of Joe Wilcox's group of climbers was graphic, but never gratuitous, in its description. At the beginning of the expedition, I could almost SEE the testosterone leaking out the car windows and spilling into every discussion the group had. Despite this, there was so much compassion in the telling that I put aside any criticisms of the climbers' egos and questionable (at times) choices and just cared about the guys. Mr. Hall obviously curtailed any judgmental thoughts when he waswriting this, so I felt compelled to do the same, which made the story even more haunting. This is a tricky thing for an author toaccomplish, and Hall really nailed it. His descriptions of his father's part in the story showed a man who was obviously meant to do the job he was given. The storm, especially the wind, was a character in itself, totally indifferent to damage and death, just carrying on the way it has done for millions of years. I loved this book and enjoyed the writing of this talented author. Each person was shown warts and all the way we all are as humans. I highly recommend "Denali's Howl", regardless of what genre the reader usually reads. Somehow, this book transcends genre, and I think that it will appeal to almost any reader. Money and time very well-spent. Thank you, Mr. Hall.

For those that don't know, in the summer of 1967, a 12 man team attempted to climb Denali (Mt. McKinley), the tallest mountain in North America....only 5 came back. I'm astonished that more people don't know (or aren't aware) of this story. I know that when it comes to mountaineering disasters, most eyes turn to Everest, K2, and the rest of the Himalayas and many of the classic books written covering those related tales (Into Thin Air, The Savage Mountain, Annapurna, etc), but I'm hoping that more readers will come to know of this tragic story (it as afterall to this day, the deadliest mountaneering disaster in American history) through Andy Hall's newly written book covering this story. There's been 4 other books written on this tradegy (two from actual survivors) and it was hard to imagine any more new details emerging, but the author went to great lengths to recover and unearth old documents, recordings, interviews, etc and it definitely shows, most notably the details surrounding the "super-storm" that attacked the mountain that summer. Few details were ever evident in previous books (from the scientific side), and it was mind boggling to finally read and absorb the actual detailed conditions the climbers were faced with high up near the summit. It was also great to read some opinions and thoughts from other notable mountaineers and climbing guides on the subject, each giving their own insight to the mistakes, and problems the 12 man team faced while ascending the mountain, and relating it to their own experiences (some on the same mountain). Also want to point out that another plus to this new book was the inclusion of color photographs from the expedition from Howard Snyder's personal collection (in previous books, we were left to grainy black and white photos). At the end of the day, many questions will remain unanswered and some mysteries forever left unsolved about this climb, but thanks to Andy's incredible research, a thoughtful portrait of each climber, and their ascent up one of the largest mountains in the world has been painted, and I can't help but just admire and respect each and every one of them. They weren't showboats, they weren't world famous mountaineers; they were just young humbled college-aged kids who, while America was at war and in the midst of some type of revolution, just wanted to climb, and sadly due to some mistakes, and some horrendous bad luck, found themselves in the history books for the wrong reasons. It's hardly ever the details and descriptions of the vast mountains, or wild weather, or the "epicness" of the adventure that draw me to these stories, but moreso the people involved, and their story and their will to face something that is obviously much grander, vast, and much more powerful than they are. It's the elements of challenging, fighting, and enduring these conditions (sometimes winning, sometimes losing) that make it difficult for me to put these books down, Denali's Howl included.Whether you're familiar with this story or not, whether you enjoy mountaineering books or not, if you're looking for a true tale of fight and survival, triumph and tragedy, then I highly recommend you pick this up and experience the deadliest mountaineering disaster in American history.

This new book full of colorful photographs of 'real people' from around the USA documents the ardor and passion of Americans when they are caught up in the political process. Burson conveys the cadence of the 'back and forth' of the two recent political presidential races Bush/Gore and Clinton/Trump and lets us in on what can happen when the political process gets too far removed from a focus on the motivations of the electorate. He pinpoints the mistakes made in ignorance and greed; the arrogance of political know-it-alls who insist that 'their way' is the only way; the positive intentions of so many involved in the political process and some of the negative forces that swirl around in that process. Burson does all this by his clear cogent writing and with his superb 'on the scene' and 'behind the scene' photography.

Charles Burson's book, "The Ground Game," is a fascinating chronicle of the Hillary Clinton campaign. The journey that he and his wife, Bunny, took in creating this work resulted in a photographic history that truly made me feel that I was in the rooms and venues with the dedicated volunteers. As important to the success of this work(and it could be argued more important)is Burson's frank analysis and critique of the campaign from the perspective of an ardent Clinton supporter. The "flashbacks" that he includes of prior campaigns he was involved with add to the book's interest. The pain that the Burson's felt with the election outcome is palpable from the book. Most of the post election autopsies I have seen point to the overuse of "data" by the Clinton campaign as an important shortcoming. Among his analysis and critique of the campaign, Burson's outline and explanation of this "data" use issue helped me understand much better how this could impact campaign decisions. Though I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the political campaign process, it could be argued that it should be a "must read" for any prospective 2020 Democratic hopeful.

The Ground Game by Charles Burson provides a fascinating written and visual perspective of the 2016 Clinton campaign from the standpoint of a political attorney turned photographer. The book is powerful in that it revisits the author’s past political experiences including the painful personal experience of the 2000 election and views the 2016 election from that standpoint. The book captures the significance of the movements involved in the 2016 campaign and illustrates them through photos. A description of the primary battles with the Bernie machine of young people when the Clinton campaign struggled but had the feeling of invincibility is illustrated with a photo of one of the Democratic caucuses where the vast majority of the younger people are supporting Sanders, foreshadowing Hillary’s inability to connect with and attract younger voters. The book convincingly shows the movements that emerged and impacted the election but, in the end without the numbers of younger voters who had supported President Obama, Clinton was unable to over-come the minority but large numbers of white voters who carried the archaic electoral college.

Charles Burson's first book is a wonderful mixture of photos and musings about Charles and his wife Bunny's political experiences through the years, especially the 2016 presidential election. As much as I enjoyed the photographs, of which several were very interesting, compelling, and artistic, it is Charles' text that makes the book extraordinary. It is so well written that it is a joy to read. His use of language is terrific. For example, page 122 contains the following: "The failure of Hillary's campaign was seeing the election through an ad hominem lens rather than through the lens of the emerging movements." I never expect much when I read a first book by anyone, but Charles' book is the exception. I highly recommend it. It really is that good.

The logical structure makes it easy to follow." —Perapera Language Tools blog"The layout makes for a digestible read; each chapter begins with a dialogue and vocabulary list, followed by grammar points and exercises. Well, after coming off of "Teach Yourself Korean", I found this book to be refreshing. It teaches at a slower pace, and better emphasizes the hangul -- I don't like using english letters for a language that doesn't use them. I found the pronunciation key to be helpful, so long as you ignored that international gobbledy-gook they use in the first two or three chapters.Other than that, it presents the information in a very teachable way, and the cd is helpful in practicing your pronunciation. Especially if you get the corresponding workbook....just make sure you have the right edition of the workbook, or else it won't match this. However, it's not a requirement to learn from this book. The downside, however, is that it really is a textbook. It presents the material in a teaching manner. While this doesn't bother me at all, being a visual learner, but it could be off-putting to the people who don't want to feel like they're back in school. Though the plus side of that is that this could be a really good textbook for an actual class. Really depends on your perspective, but you can learn something from this no matter how you see things.

I've been living in Korea, studying Korean from Korean-only textbooks. Having access to a modern, grammar-oriented, comprehensive textbook in English is a miracle at this point. It helps me articulate the points I've learned as well as the things I've picked up here and there but never fully understood.I can't give it five stars because for some reason, there is no spacing between words in the example Korean sentences. Its headache-inducing to read so when I bought Continuing Korean, I fully expected to skip over 2/3 of the book and cherry-pick the information I need. However, that book has correct formatting!Publishers, *please* fix the formatting issue, as for most first-time learners, it is more than enough to convince them to give up at the get-go.

This is a decent book to help you learn phrases and words, but it is only a supplement for on the side. I found it a little confusing and wish they had made it a little easier for the pronunciation of things. I didn't spend as much time on the book as I would have liked, since it was hard to keep my attention

An excellent, college-level textbook! Studied with a highschooler and I had to make some revisions in pronunciations. I highly suggest for someone with some Korean background, otherwise you could get lost. The accompanying CD is excellent to listen to and repeat after. Excellent to pair with the Workbook (sold separately) for any serious student of Korean language. Would not recommend as a self-learning tool. A knowledgeable teacher is absolutely recommended.

The information presented in Elementary Korean is essentially the backbone of my present Korean ability. In each lesson, aspects of Korean grammar are nicely layered on to what you have already learned in the previous lessons. Plus, this book forces you to learn Hangul because romanization is not given after the fourth lesson. This makes it a good resource for those intimidated by the Korean writing system. This book is an authentic textbook (like something one would certainly use in an university Korean language course), but it is well-equipped for the self-learner as well. The vocabulary presented in this text is clear and relevant; however, you won't realize this until the sixth lesson (Lesson 5 introduces some odd vocabulary like "imported goods"). Also, the grammar notes are just detailed enough so that one can grasp the information without much external help. The dialogues presented at the beginning of each lesson are informative and sometimes amusing. And, usually, there are additional sentences for reading after the dialogues. The book provides many examples for each of the Korean grammar concepts it teaches, so you will learn exactly how to use them. It should also be noted that this book mainly deals with the polite style of Korean speech, but it introduces the other styles as well. The audio CD contains native speakers acting out the dialogues and reading the example sentences used in each lesson. Unfortunately, only the vocabulary from Lesson 5 is read on the CD. Personally, I find that the readers speak too quickly, but this can be easily remedied by slowing down the audio with Windows Media Player or something similar. The end-of-lesson exercises are highly pertinent to the material presented in the text, and the answers for every exercise is presented in the back of the book. I have noticed, however, that a few of the answers are incorrect. Ultimately, I suggest buying Elementary Korean Workbook along with this text. The lessons are thoroughly expounded in the workbook, and you get additional listening practice as well.On a final note, there is an index and glossary in the back. The Hanja for certain terms are displayed in the glossary, but this feature is not that useful for beginners with no background in Chinese characters.I thoroughly recommend this textbook for any newcomer to the Korean language.

Since I am looking mostly for reading/writing proficiency I find this to be a great book.+ The grammar notes are clear and well illustrated. + The vocabulary is a lot but not completely overwhelming. The authors try to group closely related words physically close together to reduce the cost of learning new vocabulary. + Better than Myondo in presentation of material. Instead of spreading out related grammar material, it tries to present them together. + What I think is really great are the pronunciation rules ... you won't find this kind of practicality and detail in most other text. (Now, Myondo is very detailed but describing ssang-chiut as a voiceless alveo-palatal glottalized affricative isn't particularly helpful to me). + No Chinese characters are used in this book which is a plus at this level since Chinese characters rarely appear in the main text of popular Korean newspapers anyway + The authors actually provide a decent number of exercises with ANSWERS in the back! Now what they need to publish next is a supplementary reading and exercise book.- I concur with a previous reviewer that the CD does not have enough basic sound examples.4.5 stars.

Dinosaurs: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House #1: Dinosaurs Before Dark, by Will Osborne

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-The authors begin with an explanation of how they did their research, assuming the personas of Jack and Annie, two children who traveled back in time before returning home to do more conventional research. A discussion of the kinds of dinosaurs, misconceptions about them, and a description of other creatures that lived at the same time are included, as is an explanation of the role of fossil hunters. Another chapter offers theories about what happened to these intriguing creatures. Jack and Annie offer brief definitions and comments in sidebars; otherwise, the text reads like straightforward nonfiction. The Osbornes conclude with a listing of books, museums, videos, CD-ROMs, Internet sites, and museum visits for further information. Frequent black-and-white cartoons, labeled illustrations, and photo reproductions are instructional and appealing. While this book is a great place to begin research for a report, it will also be enjoyed by those interested in the subject.Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt. St. Alban, Washington, DC Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This book is actually interesting to read. My son very much prefers fiction over non-fiction, but both of us enjoyed reading this book. It was presented in a more narrative fashion than many non-fiction books and had little notes and such from Jack and Annie throughout tying it to his favorite series. I actually learned a few things reading this to him. Definitely not just another boring dinosaur book. The reading level is probably a year or two higher than the regular series, so while my son reads those books on his own, I read this one to him. I liked it enough that I plan on buying more Fact Tracker books to go along with the stories he is reading.

We bought this book as a companion to "Dinosaurs Before Dark" thinking it would provide our 6 yr old with more context around each of the dinosaurs featured in the book. While partially our fault for not checking, all the dinosaurs in the book are not included in this fact tracker. With that said this book is full of a ton of information regarding dinosaurs, their variety and other useful bits. The table of contents helped but an index would have been appreciated.

We love all the research guides for MTH. They are written at a higher Lexile level than the stories but it makes them fun to read together. My 6 year old doesn't have the patience to read through a research guide the entire way through on her own but together it makes for a fun project...she gets to tell me about what happened in the story to Jack & Annie and together we learn some fun facts about whatever time/place the story was about.

Students really enjoyed all the facts of this book to go along with Osborne's tree house book. The facts were easy to understand for 2nd graders and easy words for them to read. They really enjoyed the pictures and finding what dinosaur they liked best.

My 9-year old and I read the first book of the MTH series together using the Novel Ideas supplemental packet. That in itself was pretty adequate for provide more depth to the reading experience. The Dinosaurs Fact Tracker was stock full of interesting facts that were completely age-appropriate, but I didn't feel there was much connection between the Fact Tracker and the MTH book. Though I understand the point of these companion books are meant to provide a wider look into the background of the MTH books, I felt like the Fact Tracker was just random dinosaur facts. I was hoping for a little more correspondence to the MTH book and to present events.

Grandchildren love these books.

I had already bought the Magic Tree House series for my older son, but his younger brother struggles some with reading. This is perfect! He loves it. We will be ordering more for sure!

My 6yr old son likes the facts of everything!! He really enjoys reading the story and then picking up the fact book and learning more about the subject! I think these are a great companion to the Magic Treehouse stories with Jack and Annie.

What a wonderful compendium of wisdom from a variety of spiritual perspectives! And yet they all come together as one. I love this book, and will use it for years to come. Such wisdom and inspiration!

Helpful book. It arrived on time and in goof condition.

Toughtfully written. more than i expected.

Thank you Jane Redmont for this most ecumenical read. I highly recommend it to broaden one's understanding of how we as a society pray and it identifies w/many types of prayer. I love the fact that Jane shares many of her prayers w/us.

This book should never have been put on the market. There were pages torn out in several places. The pages of the book were also very yellowed with age. It was just in terrible condition for the market place. I'm not sure I'd have even given it away to anyone! Too bad because the book itself is a wonderful book concerning prayer.

Hurray! My home library is full of books on spiritual practice, all read and mostly gathering dust. All that advice to "go off and be quiet" just does not speak to my extraverted and very public self. Jane Redmont's book is the first I've seen that embraces the wildly varied personalities of those who dare to pray. She not only acknowledges the variety, but invites the reader into new spaces where God may be found. I've bought and given away half a dozen copies of this book, and I'm waiting for the paperback version so I can afford to pass more around! What a treasure. It doesn't sit on my shelf. It gets USED.

I am very impressed and moved by this book. It is not just another one of those books on spirituality that leaves you hungry the next day. It's a book you'll want to keep for a lifetime, I think. It is obviously the result of lived experience," and hence very fresh and new sounding, although it harks back to ancient themes that have haunted the daily lives of people since the brginning. A Ph.D. candidate in theology, Redmont wears her scholarly learning lightly and subtly, but it is there, making this a book where the author has not tried to "re-invent" in some New Age way all of spirituality. A very compassionate tome too! It will delight you!

A book on prayer for those who live and work in the real world. Here are stories about prayer that reflect life as I must live it! Prayer when I'm angry. Prayer when I can not pray. Prayer when everything has gone to hell. Prayer from all views of life and God.This is the best book on prayer I have ever seen. If you purchase only one book on prayer in thr next year, this should be it!

I didn't like the story as much this time round but it was still interesting and a fast read. I read it in half a day. Still prefer Katherine over Jonah! Ha ha

And by "done it again", I mean "created another great history/mystery time travel tale".The fourth installment in The Missing series, Torn by Margaret Peterson Haddix, follows Jonah and Katherine as they travel back in time to the year 1611. The missing child that they must return to history in order to correct time? John Hudson, son of the famous (famously crazy, that is) Henry Hudson. The only problem: JB, Jonah and Katherine's time travel...supervisor, you could say, is unable to find the 21st century boy who is actually John Hudson to send him back to the past. A truly missing child! But, of course, there are more problems than just a missing (missing) historical figure. Jonah must pretend to be John, mask, wigs, clothing, and all, in hopes of setting history straight. However, after an hour or so aboard the Discovery, Henry Hudson's ship, all time is thrown out of balance. Tracers, ghost-like figures that show what is supposed to happen in history, go missing, Jonah and Katherine lose all connections with JB, and an evil Mr. Prickett threatens the safety of the ship's crew, most significantly Jonah.Taking matters into their own hands, Jonah (still disguised as John Hudson) and Katherine (who is invisible thanks to the time traveling device, the Elucidator) try to make sense of the odd mishaps in time that keep occurring and attempt to save history and rescue their friends who are still stuck in the year 1600.Captivating and well-paced, Torn provides a set of loveable characters and rich historical settings to create an enjoyable read. Fans of the previous books in the Missing series will not be disappointed.

My almost 14 year old son loved this book and series. He read it for optional summer reading.

I am a 12 year old girl who loves reading and when i started reading the missing series i fell in love. I would totally recommend this book to anybody who loves reading, or for any parent who wants their child to start reading. It is also a book that is for pretty much all ages.

Son really liked the series.

I love it as a matter of fact I've got my husband and daughter riding it and when there done I'm have 3 people at work reading it.

Lots of drama with not much substance.

Another great book in "The Missing" series! These books are really well written and contain a lot of historical knowledge presented in a very entertaining format. I hope she keeps them coming!
