My daughter read this for her AP English class and I thought I should read this classic piece of literature as I had never had the opportunity. So I bought it and could not put it down. Months later, I am still thinking about this book, envisioning the cast of characters and events in the novel. Zora Neale Hurston was such a beautiful storyteller. I can see why this book is a classic piece of literature and in my mind, it stand heads above many of the other pieces of literature of have read from this period. I cannot recommend it enough to people.Hurston opens up a space for us to envision life shortly after Emancipation - where African Americans were freed but not free. She illuminates an early Black community (true) and one of the strong women (fictional) in that community. The trials and tribulations of the many characters and the barriers they encountered - the moments of joy, happiness, and pain all grip the reader and help the reader to not only imagine but to feel what it might have felt like to live during this time in the community with the people. A masterful work.

I've set a goal to reread the classics I read when I was way too young to appreciate them. I first read THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD because my older friend, Becky, told me it was "great" when I was about ten. I remember thinking it was a nice story, and that's about it. Coming back to forty years later, I can agree that it's great, but there's so much more here.The most special part of Zora Neale Hurston's writing is that she takes subjects that society wants to segment into "good" or "bad" and makes them human -- thereby making them complicated. Subjects like infidelity, domestic abuse, killing for self-protection, killing as an act of mercy, colorism, white savior complex, poverty, female pride, female submission, moral relativism... You name a tough topic, and Hurston handles it in this book with a deft touch rarely found in today's world.NOW I understand why it's a classic & don't just have to take everyone else's word for it. Definitely worth a read or ten.

Hurston gives a window view into a place that shows a growing or blossoming of a woman's life. It journeys on a three-fold path from Janie's life with her grandma through 3 marriages that unfold new discoveries of Janie as she awakens to the power of her ability to lead herself. Hurston was ahead of her time in the sense that she was already living as one who did not need to fight the battle but had arrived and 'was.'

This is truly a classic and teachable from so many direction you will not be able to stand it. You can run a class for nearly a month discussing the levels, layers, textures, and nuances to the characters and their intentions. There are modes of language, characterization, dialect, motivation, conflict, and desire that can go on forever in a classroom or book club discussion. I fell in love with the woman with so much pain from men, but always willing to feel love. You will be entangled in the world of these people so quickly you will not believe it. I suggest you download the audible version so you can take in the dynamics of Ruby Dee reading Hurston's beautiful language.

This must be very nearly a perfect novel, a short classic like Old Man and the Sea, Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye, Huckleberry Finn, with its own unique style and identity.... I found it gripping almost to the point of unputdownable from the first sentence...

I can't remember the last time I read a book that moved me as deeply as 'Their Eyes Were Watching God." But like all "great" books, it may not be for everyone. A Millennial reader, for example, might be inclined to lose patience with a woman who spends 20 years of her life with a couple loser husbands before meeting her one true love. Even though there is no story without that context. It's also possible that an older generation of women readers, Baby Boomers, for example, may be more inclined to sit quietly and say nothing, while nodding and smiling gently in response to a Millennial reader's impatience.The man who finally enters Janie's life and steals her heart is not without flaws. But. He knows how to love her. Deeply, unconditionally, joyfully. There is no "happily ever after" for Tea Cake and Janie, but what he gives her in the brief time they are together is life: fully realized, fully lived.A remarkable work of literary fiction by a skilled and soulful writer who knew stuff.

Zora Neale Hurston catches the spirit of African-Americans at that time and masterfully relays it to readers with a skilful mix of vernacular and formal English. This book is somber, insightful, relatable, and witty. More than once its blending of humor and imagery that is so uniquely Black caught me off guard, sending me into fits of laughter. Conversely, the journey and trials that Janie goes through are near heartbreaking. That this book was published in 1937 and still so powerful is a testament to the author's skill. Those who are not familiar with African-American or Caribbean dialect may find this a more challenging read, but it is well worth it.

WHAT A PAGE TURNER! House of Shadows by Chasity Bowlin is Book 1 in The Victorian Gothic Collection. This is not a standalone but book 1 in a 3 book series. Good thing will come to those who wait. This victorian paranormal is so well written that the hair on my arms stood up. Charity has such an amazing imagination and her characters, Adelaide and Eldren are just so good together. I just can’t wait to see what happens next and why! This story is very original and I am just intrigued by it. It is also very easy to read and follow. This story has a ship that sinks, dark shadows, voices, ghosts, hauntings, haunted moors, madness, alcoholic, evil, viciousness, death, guilt, marriage of convenance, understanding, rescue, but does it have love? I will just have to wait for book 2 and 3 to find out. In the mean while I highly recommend reading this book!! It is truly haunting and great!!

I devour everything this author creates, and this was no exception. I set my alarm for midnight so I could start reading as soon as it released, and it didn’t disappoint! Intriguingly Victorian, and scary enough you will want to read it with a lights on, but with a slow building romance that I hope will blossom in the next book! I am invested in these characters and can’t wait until book two arrives!! Ps. The hero is decidedly swoon worthy ... ***sighs***

This is the 11th book Ive read of Chasity's first review. Her books never disappoint me I love all of the ones I read. HOUSE OF SHADOWS has such a good plot and you feel for her characters. I just loved how the story stopped to keep it in suspense. Its been awile since I was kept wanting to know what was to happen next in a story I cant wait for part 2 to find out what happens next.

No vampires or, werewolves or the sort. Just a a true haunting! Complete with all the chills and moments of forgetting to breathe. Throw in a couple that is haunted not only in the present but by their past and you have the makings of a great read. This is a 3 part story that is wonderfully written. I do know the second is already out and I will make my way to reading that next and use the time between to ponder on some ideas I have in the story. It has the gothic flare I adore and the mix of characters that leave you wondering who is telling the truth and watching the shadows. I do believe the proposal done through telegrams had me giggling as well. =)

I was a bit disappointed you stopped where you did but I will offer the rest. Loved the characters and the build up of suspense. Reminded me of the show dark shadows. I could hardly wait til I got home to turn it on.

Five stars this is a good gothic romance, mystery surrounds this storyline to be carry on to book two... It had everything sensual, murder, and secrets and you have to continue to read it to unravel the mystery.

Loved the build up and the ending. I liked the sense of forboding that builds while reading. Then the to be continued as it were.I will not so patiently wait for the next 2 installments. I want to know what next NOW Now Now.

I am loving this story and can't wait for the next installment of this series. Had me on the edge of my seat and kept my pulses racing! I've read books that didn't end w8th the first book but continued on. So I say keep up the great stories you're telling. Me personally think you do a great job writing goth stories. Thanks again

This is not a "how to" book. This is a wonderfully illustrated series of pictures, with what I would term a variety of approaches and attitudes towards a subject and decoration that is not stiff and overly crafty. This book does show lovely layouts for designs that can be worked out for a number of applications, and still allow a free hand of sorts to the person applying these designs to their own use. I find this sort of reference material valuable, because of the layout suggestions. This is the second book I've purchased from this author. I use them both for theatrical painting, and visual idea building.

Wonderful ideas.

This beautifully illustrated book is a treasure trove of trompe l'oeil ideas for anyone's home. A good source of ideas for these designs or just to spark the imagination for developing similar but original design ideas of one's own.

Amazing work. Lots of photos and some beautiful homes. However you could incorporate some of the drawings to a smaller room.

I pre-ordered this book and put down what I was in the middle of reading when it arrived. Now I'm putting this book down and going back to what I was reading before it arrived. When I finish that I'll pick this back up and restart at page 327, "The David Chase Sessions."The entertainment value of analysis within this book is subjective, similar to a history class. To me, this is why 2-5 stars exist. Glaring flaws indicative of a rushed product or sheer ignorance is objective, similar to a history class. This is why 1 star exists.I don't only believe The Sopranos was the best TV show ever made, I believe it to be the best thing ever put on film. I consider myself a hardcore fan that has strong opinions about not only the action, but the depth of the product. I find myself discussing the art of "Isabella," the hallucinogenic brilliance of "Funhouse," The Kinks within "University," and perfected acting within "Whoever Did This" in crowds who are usually caught up with "Pine Barrens" and "Made in America." I don't have extended discussions about the end of the show. My response is typically one sentence - "David Chase doesn't give us puzzles to solve; he shows us everything that happens." I say this because I am constantly interested in the opinions of others just as fanatical about the show as myself. The fatter the book, the better.The book goes by the formula of breaking down every episode. Fine by me. From the pilot synopsis, I immediately got the impression that this section of the book was written by someone watching the episode for the first time and pausing between scenes to write a college paper. There is so much missed. There's not even a mention of Chrissy's introductory scene, or its depiction unmotivated gen x to gen y bleed over behavior applicable to every character at or under 35 within the show (Brendan, Jackie Jr., Matthew Bevilaqua, AJ, Ade, and so on). This is a miss.Tony tells Melfie he loves her. According to the book, she shows strength in standing firm against this. The book missed Melfie's third dimension - that she changed her appearance in the next two sessions and brought this love up herself when Tony didn't. This is a miss.There's no mention of the true importance behind the "one time only scene preceding the opening credits" of ep 2. No mention of the camera shots to big Puss when rats turning states on the television is blatantly shooting a premonition across our bow. The shots to Chrissy when drugs are mentioned. Another miss.When I hit page 60 and read that "Mikey was a human being who had a wife that loved him" using her performance in front of the news camera as evidence, I remembered his final words to her from the actual show: "Go take a Midol." Sorry fellas, you were correct the first time when you mentioned Mikey was "essentially a comic character." You should've stopped there. This is a glaring mistake and, you guessed it, another miss.There are many more which I'm not going to break down for the sake of keeping this review somewhat brief. When I don't like what I'm reading, or find glaring mistakes in what I'm reading, I have no shame in putting a book down. I'm finished with the meat & potatoes of this book and hopefully I'll return and find some quality within the David Chase Sessions. Unfortunately I chalk up what I've read to a 20th anniversary cash grab and I'm angry that I contributed to it.I say stick to your favorite blog on this subject. Continue watching a show that refuses to age itself. Talk to your friends about it. Think of these words before you buy the book, or take them with a grain of salt. You are free.

... because I was so engrossed reading this.I've watched the series a few times, but it's great to have this recap and breakdown. It's like having a friend to 'compare notes' with. Really, crazy that it's been 20 years since this first aired. Back then, we only used our TV for our 'VCR' and mostly played back Blockbuster rentals. I had heard the buzz, but having grown up living in an area with wiseguy families, I just figured it was going to be cliche mafioso fare. A bout of homesickness around 2000/early 2001 led to my renting the first season at Blockbuster. After 9/11, I wanted to hook up the TV again for news coverage ... but of course I also wanted to catch the next season of The Sopranos, so we got HBO and there we still were in 2007 watching that finale. I really thought the power went out. Can't wait to get to the part with Chase discussing it all, including the ending. Personally, I always felt Tony was killed and it was foreshadowed a few episodes prior when Baccala opines that when you die "everything just goes black." To me, that would be a brilliant ending. And no matter what this book concludes, I won't "stop believing".

The detail in the book is insane. If you like behind the scenes stuff, you gotta get this book.

The Sopranos is undeniably one of the best television shows of all time, but what truly makes it stand out are the layers upon layers that David Chase and his writers (and crew) added to each and every moment. This incredible books dives deep into these layers and offers analysis and facts and... fun? Truly, rewatching the series while reading this book has really made me realize the deep (dark) humor of this show. If you've watched the show - buy this book, if you've never watched this show - buy this book and bada binge those episodes right now.

I have watched The Sopranos series multiple times, and with this being the 20th anniversary, I’ve been reading all I can about the show. My husband and I have closely followed Alan Sepinwall’s writings for years, so this book was the perfect addition for my love of the show. I haven’t read the entire book yet, but I do love the format of it. The book is broken up into each episode, so it’s easy to jump around and read more about the episodes I loved the most. It’s an easy read with some really good insight to the show and the symbolism throughout each episode with each character. I can’t wait to read each chapter!

Absolutely brilliant. I am a huge fan of the show, easily have seen each episode/season a dozen times. I incorporate the dialogue into everyday conversations. Having said that, and being 6 chapters into the book (arrived last night) I am loving the trivia worthy tidbits on every page. Can't wait to finish the book and go back to rewatch episodes to rediscover all the things I missed. Perfect gift for all fans and a way to introduce this show to millennials who may not realize how much The Sopranos influenced all of their favorite shows of today.

I sped through this book. Well written,excellent analysis of the episodes. The interviews with Chase shed lots of light on his choices for the direction of the series. The letter to Gandolfini from Chase at his funeral is amazing.

I timed my rewatch of the Sopranos to coincide with the release of this book, and it didn't disappoint! It's so much more than just episode recaps - it's a look into the minds and hearts of the characters.
