The Mind of War offers a different spot in the dissecting John Boyd's career and theories than the more biographical option offered by Robert Coram. Hammond, who knew and worked with Boyd during his time at War College, focuses on how Boyd thought and how his thoughts were expressed with only brief touches on lifetime events. This book helps one understand one of the basics of modern strategy, showing how Boyd achieved his ideas, and where the emphasis should be. An excellent add to any strategic collection.

This book attempts to examine and explain to the non-specialists the revolutionary ideas of late Colonel John Boyd (USAF ret.) that literally showed the way to the transformation of the U.S. Defense Establishment into a 21st Century structure. The fact that in the end Boyd failed in his vision does not bode well for the future of this establishment.After this book was written, Robert Coram wrote an excellent biography of Boyd that also provided the reader with a detailed exposition of Boyd's ideas. Also in a highly technical and quite well done doctorial work, Royal Dutch Air Force Officer Frans Osinga provided an excellent dissertation on Boyd's development of his strategic theory of war from his original research and development work on aircraft fighter tactics. So don't these two fine books supercede this one?Well for this reviewer at least they don't, they compliment this book. Boyd was a brilliant complicated thinker and Hammond's work will help to clarify Boyd's thinking and his approach to tactics, strategy, and war. This book clearly shows how Boyd, and his "fighter mafia", could have made the U.S. Department of Defense the center of national security policy instead of the center for log rolling and pork barrel politics that it is today. All who recognize Boyd's worth would be advised to read this book

This is an excellent book about a man who, in his own words, chose "to do" and not "to be." What he did was defeat all comers in forty seconds in aerial combat, teach his techniques to others, evaluate how he did it to create the energy maneuvering evaluation of all fighter aircraft, develop the OODA loop, and change how most militaries look at the art of war.What did the US Air Force allow this brilliant and obnoxious man of impeccable integrity to be? He was passed over twice to make full colonel. He came back to the Pentagon as a civilian paid one day per pay period. Our Marines loved him and history will treat this nobel hero kinder than the h u t a Air Force which wanted to kill the best fighter in the world because he developed it cheaply.

I have read 2 books about Boyd, He was one of the true great minds of war and his brilliance in finding the truth and getting results put him above most. If you want to learn about aircraft design and how the military works, this is a book that you need to read. It was Boyd and his band of followers that developed the true Art of war and how to get things done despite what higher ups had to say.

After reading the book "Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed The Art Of War" I was curious to learn more about John Boyd and his theories. So far I've read the book twice and need to do it again. Huge amount of information, some at odds with the first book as pertains to Col Boyd's life BUT the expansion of the OODA Loop and others is really food for thought. As a retied fighter pilot some of the data was surprising and a lot of it was of the "wow!, so that's where that came from" stuff. If you are interested in how an air force pilot changed the way the USMC and USA goes into battle this is a book for you.

Here you can taste a bit of Boyd’s intellectual intensity together with his numerous accomplishments in all US military echelons. This man managed to change how to fight and design fighters but also described the intellectual tools he used to do his contributions. This is priceless and is mainly related to his ability to do creative synthesis + voracious curiosity. He end up realizing that schools teach us how to do analysis leaving synthesis behind, but synthesis is the key skill to adapt therefore to thrive in life.

There is a lot in this that is gushing in its idolisation of Boyd. It tends to jump from one point to another without taking the effort to thoroughly explain Boyds ideas and history. The development of the F16 is dealt with briefly and you end up asking yourself why it mattered. Apart from building a cheaper successor to the F15 no reason is given. Burton and the Bradley fighting vehicle are mentioned but not in any depth. This book is good in places but frustrating at times as well. I think more effort in the details and editing would have made it more logical and read better. They should have been brave enough to make it twice as long. This book is only a couple of hundred pages of large print. Montgomery got 3 volumes of 800 pages and small print. The last volume of Montgomery was 1200 pages. This book might give you a taste but is short of doing Boyd full justice.

I have worked in I.T. for 15 years - in Windows system administration, database administration, and utility software development. About one month ago I started reading heavily on security, and planned for 2015 a shift in career focus to that discipline. So I bought this book and began to read. This had immediate payoff just 2 days ago when I noticed an email from our security team that an IDS had detected a possible Trojan signature on one of our servers. Another analyst ran a full AV scan, and when she found nothing, the email thread dried up. Not so convinced (I had just read the fact on Mandiant's website that "100% of victims had up-to-date AV software), I triggered a complete memory dump on the server using LiveKD and began working on it with WinDbg commands and Volatility Framework. Within the first few hours, it appeared that there certainly looked to be a rootkit-like presence, but with my limited security knowledge and, even though I debug a kernel dump every now and then, I don't usually look at things like the IDT 2e entry, etc. However, 15 hours into researching my first real-life production issue, I completely narrowed down the source and contacted the security team and account management. This server would have continued to operate under the radar with the standard tools continually missing the malware's presence and caused who knows what problems. Thanks to one of the most well-organized, well-written, and informative I.T. books I have ever read, I was able to effectively isolate this piece of malware. This book is an absolute must for anyone even employed in I.T. with responsibilities over safeguarding company networks and infrastructure, and (unfortunately) these days, should probably be employed by anyone at all that plugs in an Ethernet cable or attaches to Wi-Fi! Outstanding material - thanks very much.

I wish I had purchased this a lot sooner than I did. Although the SANS FOR 508 course was a great course, this book goes even further in detail regarding not just how to use Volatility and its plugins, but more importantly WHY you use certain plugins and HOW the plugins work based on how malware works. Very thorough explanations, it makes thing a lot more clearer now. Its like a lightbulb went off and I'm only half-way through the book. Well worth the price. A must for any serious forensics analyst who wants to stand out amongst his/her peers.

At this writing (Fall 2014) the Wiley instructor companion website is not up to Wiley standards (yet). I wanted to test the code for this review, but the code section on the site only defaults to the creative commons license (both the code and license links). Same with all the chapters, they only display commons, a strawman syllabus and an intro letter. They only resource that is already up is the Powerpoint presentation, and at over 100 pages it is simply OUTSTANDING, which whets the appetite even more for the rest of the outlines, solutions, code, and much more.So, Wiley, get with it! If you are considering buying this, add your vote in comments and Wiley might listen. I'll update this once we get the code, both with quality of the code and where it can be used. Going over the license so far, it is quite generous, much like GNU with an attribution link, although of course more robust beyond teaching (eg commercial) if you do get permission. The text itself has wonderful, up to date sploit and software info, patches, etc. but the site, for a book this costly, needs to be completed. I'm not recommending you pass on this because of it, but we won't be getting the full value for our purchase, nor will our students, until the site is completed.REVIEW UPDATE: SEE MICHAEL'S COMMENT ATTACHED TO THIS REVIEW. Although Amazon's automated system generally removes links, the comment gives complete and up to date online resources for this book, as the publisher's link is incomplete, and will not be updated. Both Windows and Linux give the exact traces indicated, these authors are the real thing.

AMF is a volume of stuff you just have to know, or at least you have to know where to find it. The book is an essential reference, reasonably complete and well written. It reminds me of the classic Morse and Feshbach "Methods of Mathematical Physics". Like M&F, its contents must be ingested in small chunks when needed. It isn't a textbook entitled the principles of memory forensics.It's not a comprehensive handbook like Morse and Feshbach. But the current empirical field of memory forensics is not amenable to the kind of structural analysis that can be taught to graduate level physics students. My reason for not rating it five stars is the lack of a theoretical backbone. This is not a computer science book. This is a book about the volatility framework with application to the structure and function of computer memory. It is not a book about data structures or processes. It isn't really forensics, which is the presentation of scientific data and analysis in a court of law.If you buy the book as a practical handbook of memory forensics, as its authors say, "Art"; you will be pleased. It is a "What do I do now that I have downloaded and typed 'python vol.py.'" I don't know of a better book,

I took the memory forensics workshop at DefCon this year. That was an amazing introduction to Volatility. But I expected that it would still be difficult to get far into such a complex technical subject. Silly me. This book is so well structured and written. Makes memory forensics fun.

This book was IT.It fed my intellect and nourished my mind.Carl Jung is a Father on my intellectual journey. I go back to consult him when I feel pathless. And he never disappoints. He is patient, knowing (real knowing- not a fake), mythical, and scientific.

How could a book by Carl Jung about Carl Jung not be fascinating? But he was hard to follow throughout parts of the book. His mental inner workings go deeper than I've ever read and, as good writing does, left me with a sense of being known on a much deeper level myself. I loved his ability to objectively observe and articulate spirituality but found it a bit dry a couple of times, being that I have a life of experiencing spirituality, as I know everyone does firsthand to at least some degree, is, I wished to read more about this by him. But it was his life's work to do it more analytically. I recommend it for the patient reader with an interest in what I've mentioned as well as good comprehension skills.

I loved this book for the honest way Jung writes about himself. He is refreshingly different from most autobiographies in general and autobiographies of psychologists and psychiatrists in particular. Most personal books I've read by psychologists are full of suspicious anecdotes about how their always brilliant insights saved one patient after another while living an amazingly perfect life of happiness and endless joy.There is none of that in Jung's autobiography. Here is an example of how he viewed his life taken from his summing up at the end of the book:"The older I have become, the less I have understood or had insight into or known about myself. I am astonished, disappointed, pleased with myself. I am distressed, depressed, rapturous. I am all these things at once, and cannot add up the sum. I am incapable of determining ultimate worth or worthlessness; I have no judgment about myself and my life. There is nothing I am quite sure about. I have no definite convictions–not about anything, really. I know only that I was born and exist, and it seems to me that I have been carried along. I exist on the foundation of something I do not know. In spite of all uncertainties, I feel a solidity underlying all existence and a continuity in my mode of being. "

A genius reveals his soul. By far the most important thinker I've read, yet human enough to show his humanity. Never claiming divinity, he brought us close to the spiritual doorways, and his book is the best introduction to the man and his inspired thoughts. I have his full Collected Works, but this book is the starting place. I am reading it for the third time.

I dont have to understand everything in the book to be aware that I was given many great insights. There are lots of things I always wondered about in my own life, and Jung and Jaffe provided many answers to how things fit together. My own myth about God and the unseen realm has been greatly augmented. Please read!

Great book for anyone interested in learning about Carl Jung. Carl was way ahead of his time, extremely intelligent and insightful. I picked up some excellent key points that has helped me see things from a better point of view. I'm barely a casual reader, so this book was a bit difficult for me to read at times. There is a lot of talk and reference to religions and cultures from all over the world which was quite a bit difficult for me to read as I am unfamiliar with most of the reference and wording, thankful for google! Regardless, I enjoyed reading about Carl and his life and felt a benefit from reading this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual autobiography of Carl Jung, one of the truly original thinkers of the twentieth century. Rather than write a conventional autobiography, Jung decided, in this book, to explore how he came to be interested in the workings of the unconscious and the systematic study of its manifestations. About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK. Dinosaur A-Z is a great book for toddlers who love dinosaurs. My kids loved the book and ask for it every day. I would totally recommend it for any toddler who loves dinosaurs. The book has stood up to 3 year old twins dragging it around everywhere. The pages are pretty thick. I would note the pictures are of realistic dinosaurs and not cartoons. Spoiler Alert - there isn't a T-Rex in the book, which has caused disappointment for the kids.

What a gorgeous dinosaur book! I truly wish I owned this one as a child. My almost-two-year-old is obsessed with dinosaurs (dee-saurs, he calls them!), so I bought this book to teach him a few more dinosaurs along with his ABCs. I was blown away by the quality of this title. The pages are full-color on heavier weight, glossy paper, so it's really a treat to flip through. As for the content, I was impressed to find that the pronunciations are included on each page! No more messing up dinosaur names, hooray! I can't recommend this book enough. I will probably start buying this book for all the little children in my life now, that's how much we enjoy it.

It's great for the kids too! We have read this book so often in the year that we've had it that it's barely held together anymore. This truly is THE book for kids who really love dinosaurs. You and your child(ren) will learn 26 dinosaurs- one for each letter of the alphabet. Many are new but there will be a few familiar faces too. We have quite a few dinosaur books, both fiction and non-fiction but this one is the favorite. If your child isn't a dinosaur lover they might be better off with dinosaur fiction.Pros:-The pronunciation! It's wonderful. I can now confidently point out a Parasaurolophus or Ouranosaurus and state their name without hesitation. It's hands down the best feature of this book, especially for the parents.-The details. You can find out how big each dinosaur is compared to an adult man and how some of them compare to cars, buses, kids and more. You'll learn what each dinosaur eats, what their name means, if they are fast or slow and much more information. It's easy to read each entire page or keep it simple for younger readers by only reading the names or talking about the pictures.-It's a board book. Another reviewer stated that it might deter older readers from seeking out this book and I agree, but it also makes it a sturdier book. There should be an edition for older readers.-The pictures. They are realistic rather than cartoon-y.Cons:-The size of the book makes it difficult to fit on a regular shelf. I understand that there is so much to fit on each page and that the larger words are important for younger readers but it does make it harder to store.

Great book

My 5yo granddaughter is really into dinosaurs and dragons. She has a lot of dino figures and electronic dino toys. With the new Jurassic Park movie coming out she's started being more interested in the actual names of the dinosaurs. I found this book online and thought it would encourage her to become more interested in books and less in electronic means of exploring her interests. To be honest I didn't expect much because of the low price for a hardcover edition, but was pleasantly surprised to find the book very informative with photo like graphics. A definitive must for ages 3 to 11

Wonderful dinosaur book and most importantly it tells you how to pronounce the name! There is one dinosaur per page and just enough facts to be interesting but not overwhelming. I bought one for my 4 year old son and for 6 year old nephew.

I'm sure you guys have seen those little dinosaur pack they sell at dollars stores all deformed and weird looking , I'm sure that's what they used for these pictures,. To top it off there's no T-rex , my son would have loved this book if it only had one awsome looking T-rex at least.

Before I read this book I did not know that she had so many more architectural pieces.I remeber the controversy surrounding the Vietnam Veteran's memorial. I was fairly young but it was a topic of discussion in my family. I remember my mother believed that it was the perfect memorial for a war that killed so many and hurt so many more.. I could not have said it so well.In Maya Lin: Thinking with Her Hands I developed a richer understanding of the woman who created so much meaningful art. I learned about her upbrining in a family that treasured art, the dislocation of her parents who longed to go home to China, how much she loved school and loved learning and how, though shy and reserved, she decided to enter the contest to build a memorial for Vietnam Vets. I was stunned by the Vietnam Vets Memorial when I finally had the opportunity to see it in Washinton, D.C. and suprised and moved to learn that she designed so many more beautiful buildings. Honestly, after seeing the pictures in the book I want the opportunity to see all of Maya Lin's work and it is now on my bucket list. Thank you for the wonderful crisp and clear photographs and the rich detail of this book.Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.

Absolutely worthless in planning a trip along Route 66 unless you only want to know about the major cities along the route. I bought this book just as it was released so there were no previous reviews. I like most Lonely Planet books and have probably bought 100 of them in the past 25 years. This is the worst one I've bought. It is very superficial and minimally useful for planning a trip (which I'm doing now) along Route 66 and I certainly won't waste the space to take it with me. In reality, it is mainly a book that describes the larger cities along the route (Chicago, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Santa Fe, Flagstaff, LA) with a bit of information about the other sites along the route. I'll go over the Arizona information as an example. The Arizona chapter consists of a description of Flagstaff and the surrounding areas along with an inset about the Grand Canyon. A total of 10 pages in the Arizona chapter! And almost only about Flagstaff. And much of that is devoted to worthless things like the fact that there is a Macy's and a Whole Food market in Flagstaff. Not likely to be of much interest for those looking for a Route 66 "experience." Granted, there is the additional section with 4 pages for Arizona at the beginning but this is still a very superficial description of the highlights of the route. The author could have written this highlight section in an hour from the internet without having been anywhere neat the route. I would strongly suggest people not bother with this book. I'm sure there are much better options.

Not very helpful. Spend your money on a different guide. Did not have any new information than many of the other and much better guides out there and limited information on many Route 66 specific destinations/sights.

This was a fabulous little book about stoppingbpoints along the old Route 66

This was not worth the price not one of lonely planets better books.

Has very good options on traveling, and many places to stop and see

Kicking around the idea of doing the central segment of US Route 66 perhaps this August 2018 - just me and the Cooper S - should be great fun!

After a while I became mode 4 and hated every chick I came across.......and then i read this book. I now know that i should have always been my true self no matter who disapproved of me. I still gotta shake off years of anger and bitterness but this book gave me the keys to do that. I feel that chans on spirt have been removed by reading this. Thank you Alan Toger Currie! God bless!

Mode One is a milestone in philosophy and in humanities. The book is beyond the subject of seduction. As far as the pick up artist community, I regard Mode One as the foundation for all the books and multi-media on the subject whether they came before, after Mode One and the ones to come. The truth behind the pages of this book is true to any time in the history of this planet and will transcend time itself. Roger Allan Currie is a genius, truly an illustrious person ahead of our time. He is very pragmatic, and I think any area of study is as good as it is useful. This book is a life safer!Mode One is not an invention of a phenomena in the area of seduction. It is more an observation of the laws at work in this field. These laws have always been at work, and Currie is merely pointing them out with his brilliant mind.Mode One can be compared to Sun Tzu, THE ART OF WAR. The truth behind these two books can be applied to just about any area of life for greater efficiency and results.I am truly privileged to have found the book back in 2009 among the zillions in the market. I remember getting home on a Saturday at 2 am and noticing the book had arrived in the mail. I was so intrigued that I read the book in one sitting. I was left in awe and felt a sense of enlightenment after reading the book. I sought the email of Currie online, and I was lucky to have found it. I emailed Currie telling him how great the book was and to my surprise I got a response from him shortly after. Thanks Currie!

I really don't know if the advice Mr. Currie espouses here works for EVERYBODY but I guess we can all try... I have picked up A LOT of PUA books over the years and this one is the one I reach for the most to brush up on pick-up skills because I just like the candor and directness of his approach. Other people in his circles espouse the " cocky but funny " approach, which has worked for me LIKE CRAZY, but I can see this approach working for me if I was dressed to the nines, smelled like a million dollars, my breath was the epitome of a fresh ocean breeze, my hair was perfectly slicked back and the object of my lust was the hottest woman in the room... and I would go after her with the vengeance of a Great white shark going after the biggest, most meatiest tuna in the school... the advice in this book and the other two that follow is absolutely scandalous. Pick this book up, it's worth the read and if it works for you MAJOR PROPS, MORE POWER TO YOU!

I thought that I was a player. I thought that I knew everything about men, women, and relationships. I knew that what I knew was not enough and actually, I knew nothing, and I wanted hard to change that. That same day I purchases the entire mode one audiobooks trilogy and went hard into learn mode. Later, I bought the books.Alan will teach you how to be real, honest, and get past your insecurities. He will help you have better relationships and interactions with people in general.Both men and women can enjoy the book, but it is primarily for men. After reading and learning MODE ONE, I can guarantee that you will have better relationship and will most likely never have a horrible dating experience, for if you follow Alan's advice, you will already know what you need to know about the person that you are interested in so that you will never waste time and money trying to get to know if you have a vibe with someone(what a long sentence).If I could afford to buy this book for all men and women and make it a prerequisite for starting relationships, I would. There are few books or authors that have impacted my life the way that MODE ONE has. I could say so much more.If you are ready to read/hear the truth and be truthful to yourself and others, then this is the book for you. If you want to keep playing the game, lying to yourself and others, please pass this up. It will only shatter your world.

This is a Primer on Getting the Life you want and the Associations you want with people in your life, Both men and Women using Confidence, Direct Communication and Honesty.For me Chapter on the Alpha / Beta Spectrum is Phenomenal! Never heard it quite described in such a manner. Its almost like Alpha / Beta Spectrum is a transitory State and a man has to monitor is inner attitude and responses about himself throughout his life with women and society in order to maintain Alpha Status.There's no doubt the Alpha and Modified Alpha Status is better for a man in this life. It just opens so much more options and cuts down on unnecessary B.S. and social manipulation for negative agendas others have for you.Thank you Alan for creating this philosophy and codifying it .
