The trick is to write a delightfuly ridiculous froth a la Carriger; or make a protagonist the reader could both disbelieve and WANT to be true, like Raybourne's new Veronica Speedwell.For actual wonderful writing exactly in the genre and books with internally coherent plots, well-fleshed characters, and believable dialogue; read Kate Ross, Madeleine Robins, and Georgette Heyers.
I was very interested in the basic premise of this book which is a detective society in Regency England. The execution of this potentially interesting concept left a lot to be desired. The plot line was both poorly constructed and predictable. An editor would have been a great help here. I felt the author had plot pieces she wished to utilize and rammed them in when possible. The plot felt forced and plastic. The abduction was the most ridiculous of all and I completely stopped reading at that point. It was more Nancy Drew than C S Harris.The characters were artificial, without true emotional connection, and simplistic-predictable again. The ruined but intrepid commoner and, of course, the mysterious duke both of whom have difficult backgrounds. Gee, why hasn't anyone thought of that before? Whenever I see a duke as the H, I cringe. It's been done well but rarely. There were too many characters, all of whom were simplistically drawn. The h seemed more TSTL than intrepid.The storyline was choppy and went on and on. Again, needed an editor. I recently read a Christmas short story by this author which I liked and which was well done. This author needs to either stay with short stories or tighten her full novels.Although I can understand an author's desire to build a series, I resent buying and taking the time to read a poorly constructed story which pushes the next book. Originality and depth were both missing. The author tried to do too much and nothing got completed.
I was disappointed in this series after I read Deadly Scandal, and I had hopes. In my opinion, there was a lot of padding that added nothing to the story, the pace was slow (which is not necessarily bad) and the tone & language were out of place, too modern for the time period. I read it to the end, but guessed the murderer about three chapters before the characters did, which again does not bother me, I just failed to engage fully with the heroine, which IS important. If you are not as picky as I am, you'll probably enjoy this, it does have it's redeeming features.
This is the most enjoyable series that I have read in a while. And each book so far seems to have two investigations, the one that makes the book and the side one of her investigating her parents' killer. Very entertaining story, proving you don't need violence, sex, and gore to shock and entertain. I salute this author for her ability to pull me out of my life while giving me pure entertainment. Cant speak for the entire series yet, but this one was a pleasure to readUpdate- don't read after the second book. What started off as such a fun series, quickly snowballs downhill. By book 3 I'm pretty sure the author had stopped caring. I really enjoyed the first two, but 3 and 4 are really awful. Both fall flat and waste what was once a good story. I just wanted to warn the type of people who this could help during their decision making process. As I said, first two books were very enjoyable..as enjoyable as 3 and 4 are miserable to read
I think you might call this a beach read. There's not much to the plot or the mystery. The characters are ok but not compelling. The style veers from mystery to romance/fantasy and back without being very successful as either. What it is emphatically NOT is in any way Victorian. It has the occasional superficial element of Victorian life, but the characters show neither the habits nor culture nor attitudes of Victorian England. 3 stars is actually pretty generous, but I did read it all the way to the end, so it was entertaining enough to be better than nothing.
Parker keeps the readers attention easily as she develops the characters early with just enough tension to let you know that something "more" there. I also love the setting, a bookstore, a place where our hero can research any information she requires, as well as, periodic romps into the culture of England's aristocracy. Being a visual person the scenes are easily imagined. Oh yes, definitely a "who done it" and that is always a pleasure. A pleasure to read with very limited gore.
I love historical mysteries with some romance. If you do also then you may enjoy this book. liked the main characters, but don't love them yet, especially the heroine. She seems a little insensitive which is odd given her back story.There was a lot going on in this story--it dealt with blackmail so we learned a number of secrets. At times it was hard to keep everyone straight--at least for me. As much as we learned about these folks I hope some of them show up again.I have ordered book 2. This series has promise.
