1I wish Giovanni would kiss me.Oh, but there are so many reasons why this would be a terrible idea. To begin with, Giovanni is ten years younger than I am, and, like most Italian guys in their twenties, he still lives with his mother. These facts alone make him an unlikely romantic partner for me, given that I am a professional American woman in my mid-thirties, who has just come through a failed marriage and a devastating, interminable divorce, followed immediately by a passionate love affair that ended in sickening heartbreak. This loss upon loss has left me feeling sad and brittle and about seven thousand years old. Purely as a matter of principle I wouldn't inflict my sorry, busted-up old self on the lovely, unsullied Giovanni. Not to mention that I have finally arrived at that age where a woman starts to question whether the wisest way to get over the loss of one beautiful brown-eyed young man is indeed to promptly invite another one into her bed. This is why I have been alone for many months now. This is why, in fact, I have decided to spend this entire year in celibacy. To which the savvy observer might inquire: 'Then why did you come to Italy?'To which I can only reply—especially when looking across the table at handsome Giovanni— 'Excellent question.'Giovanni is my Tandem Exchange Partner. That sounds like an innuendo, but unfortunately it's not. All it really means is that we meet a few evenings a week here in Rome to practice each other's languages. We speak first in Italian, and he is patient with me; then we speak in English, and I am patient with him. I discovered Giovanni a few weeks after I'd arrived in Rome, thanks to that big Internet cafÈ at the Piazza Barbarini, across the street from that fountain with the sculpture of that sexy merman blowing into his conch shell. He (Giovanni, that is—not the merman) had posted a flier on the bulletin board explaining that a native Italian speaker was seeking a native English speaker for conversational language practice. Right beside his appeal was another flier with the same request, word-for-word identical in every way, right down to the typeface. The only difference was the contact information. One flier listed an e-mail address for somebody named Giovanni; the other introduced somebody named Dario. But even the home phone number was the same.Using my keen intuitive powers, I e-mailed both men at the same time, asking in Italian, "Are you perhaps brothers?"It was Giovanni who wrote back this very provocativo message: "Even better. Twins!"Yes—much better. Tall, dark and handsome identical twenty-five-year-old twins, as it turned out, with those giant brown liquid-center Italian eyes that just unstitch me. After meeting the boys in person, I began to wonder if perhaps I should adjust my rule somewhat about remaining celibate this year. For instance, perhaps I could remain totally celibate except for keeping a pair of handsome twenty-five-year-old Italian twin brothers as lovers. Which was slightly reminiscent of a friend of mine who is vegetarian except for bacon, but nonetheless ... I was already composing my letter to Penthouse:In the flickering, candlelit shadows of the Roman café, it was impossible to tell whose hands were caress—But, no.No and no.I chopped tvhe fantasy off in mid-word. This was not my moment to be seeking romance and (as day follows night) to further complicate my already knotty life. This was my moment to look for the kind of healing and peace that can only come from solitude.Anyway, by now, by the middle of November, the shy, studious Giovanni and I have become dear buddies. As for Dario—the more razzle-dazzle swinger brother of the two—I have introduced him to my adorable little Swedish friend Sofie, and how they've been sharing their evenings in Rome is another kind of Tandem Exchange altogether. But Giovanni and I, we only talk. Well, we eat and we talk. We have been eating and talking for many pleasant weeks now, sharing pizzas and gentle grammatical corrections, and tonight has been no exception. A lovely evening of new idioms and fresh mozzarella. Now it is midnight and foggy, and Giovanni is walking me home to my apartment through these back streets of Rome, which meander organically around the ancient buildings like bayou streams snaking around shadowy clumps of cypress groves. Now we are at my door. We face each other. He gives me a warm hug. This is an improvement; for the first few weeks, he would only shake my hand. I think if I were to stay in Italy for another three years, he might actually get up the juice to kiss me. On the other hand, he might just kiss me right now, tonight, right here by my door ... there's still a chance ... I mean we're pressed up against each other's bodies beneath this moonlight ... and of course it would be a terrible mistake ... but it's still such a wonderful possibility that he might actually do it right now ... that he might just bend down ... and ... and ... Nope.He separates himself from the embrace."Good night, my dear Liz," he says."Buona notte, caro mio," I reply.I walk up the stairs to my fourth-floor apartment, all alone. I let myself into my tiny little studio, all alone. I shut the door behind me. Another solitary bedtime in Rome. Another long night's sleep ahead of me, with nobody and nothing in my bed except a pile of Italian phrasebooks and dictionaries.I am alone, I am all alone, I am completely alone.Grasping this reality, I let go of my bag, drop to my knees and press my forehead against the floor. There, I offer up to the universe a fervent prayer of thanks.First in English. Then in Italian. And then—just to get the point across—in Sanskrit.2And since I am already down there in supplication on the floor, let me hold that position as I reach back in time three years earlier to the moment when this entire story began—a moment which also found me in this exact same posture: on my knees, on a floor, praying.Everything else about the three-years-ago scene was different, though. That time, I was not in Rome but in the upstairs bathroom of the big house in the suburbs of New York which I'd recently purchased with my husband. It was a cold November, around three o'clock in the morning. My husband was sleeping in our bed. I was hiding in the bathroom for something like the forty-seventh consecutive night, and—just as during all those nights before—I was sobbing. Sobbing so hard, in fact, that a great lake of tears and snot was spreading before me on the bathroom tiles, a veritable Lake Inferior (if you will) of all my shame and fear and confusion and grief.I don't want to be married anymore.I was trying so hard not to know this, but the truth kept insisting itself to me.I don't want to be married anymore. I don't want to live in this big house. I don't want to have a baby. But I was supposed to want to have a baby. I was thirty-one years old. My husband and I—who had been together for eight years, married for six—had built our entire life around the common expectation that, after passing the doddering old age of thirty, I would want to settle down and have children. By then, we mutually anticipated, I would have grown weary of traveling and would be happy to live in a big, busy household full of children and homemade quilts, with a garden in the backyard and a cozy stew bubbling on the stovetop. (The fact that this was a fairly accurate portrait of my own mother is a quick indicator of how difficult it once was for me to tell the difference between myself and the powerful woman who had raised me.) But I didn't—as I was appalled to be finding out—want any of these things. Instead, as my twenties had come to a close, that deadline of THIRTY had loomed over me like a death sentence, and I discovered that I did not want to be pregnant. I kept waiting to want to have a baby, but it didnt happen. And I know what it feels like to want something, believe me. I well know what desire feels like. But it wasn't there. Moreover, I couldn't stop thinking about what my sister had said to me once, as she was breast-feeding her firstborn: 'Having a baby is like getting a tattoo on your face. You really need to be certain it's what you want before you commit.'How could I turn back now, though? Everything was in place. This was supposed to be the year. In fact, we'd been trying to get pregnant for a few months already. But nothing had happened (aside from the fact that—in an almost sarcastic mockery of pregnancy—I was experiencing psychosomatic morning sickness, nervously throwing up my breakfast every day). And every month when I got my period I would find myself whispering furtively in the bathroom: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me one more month to live ...

Eat Pray Love: After a painful divorce and a love affair that ended, author Elizabeth Gilbert needed help mending her broken heart. She didn’t know where to start, but then one evening, she collapsed on the bathroom floor in prayer. A small inner voice said, “Go back to bed.” That’s exactly what she needed - rest. She needed to be strong. She planned a one-year vacation in which she hoped to mend her broken heart and to find peace. She would spent four months in Italy; four months in India and four months in Indonesia. She points out that each country begins with “I’ and this journey was about self discovery. It’s a must read for people like me who’ve had our hearts broken, and then those hearts never seems to mind. I’m still aching over the loss of my dad and my birth family. I’ve studied meditation with differing results. This book proved a how-to book on how to heal. Chapters were not intended to be how-to chapters, but that’s what many of them were for me. Most of us can’t drop everything and rush to an apartment in Rome and then to a retreat in India and then to Bali. But we can learn yoga and meditation anywhere. We can order pizza and make new friends. If you aren’t hurting and you don’t need the guide to meditation and self discovery, it’s still a great book. The collection of 108 personal essays are fascinating with lots of fresh insights into the human psych and the types of characters that one usually finds only in a novel. There’s Richard the Texan who nicknames Gilbert, “Groceries; there’s the plumber who takes her to the highest spot at the Indian retreat, there’s Ketut the medicine man who is somewhere between 65 and 112 years old and Wayan the medicine woman searching for a home. It’s hard not to fall in love with these characters. Gilbert gains weight in Italy, self awareness in India and self confidence in Bali, Indonesia. And she finds love. Some chapters are too pat. She discovers the four brothers who are sort of guardian angels we all have. On her way home that day, a monkey threatens her, but she is feisty, and she stand up to the creature. After all she’s got four tough brothers protecting her. Too pat. The chapter was contrived. The reader is so busy rooting for her that he forgets his own troubles - except to put the book down for awhile to eat, pray, meditate and fall in love. That’s a lot to get from one book.

I wish I had read a sample before I bought the book. I didn't get past the 3rd chapter. It starts off with how she sobs at night because she wants a divorce. And then on to her husband being mad because she wants a divorce - and then he's still mad when she moves in with a guy. Well duh. Not for me.

i loved her book "The Signature of All Things". This is more of an autobiography about a needy, self centered person

Whiny, preachy, political claptrap written by a neurotic spoiled brat. Save your money. Don't buy this crap. If there were a way to give this a minus hundred, I would.

This is, by far, my all time favorite book. It meant, and still means, so much to me, especially as a woman. I was a single mother for most of my now adult daughter's life, and I was so desperately sad and lonely after my divorce with my husband/her stepdad (Our wedding, which was obviously well pre-planned, ended up being on the day of Princess Diana's funeral (9/6/1997) and our divorce was finalized on 9/11/2001 (yep, THE day)...There's my "sign"... Anyway, several years passed and I still just couldn't see a future....of anything, happiness, travel, love, ???...(other than going through the motions and working on being the best mother I could be)...I too, was 36 years old at this time. When my daughter was old enough to have a stable relationship with her biological father, I would have every other weekend alone. I used to go to the bookstore "Borders" every Friday night and I would walk aimlessly around the entire store, just looking for any sign, the next sign for the next move, for me... I prayed and prayed constantly, just not knowing what or where I needed to be... with my physical life, my spiritual life, my love life, my motherhood... and then I looked up. On the top shelf of the "newest releases" I saw the cover of "Eat, Pray, Love"... I INSTANTLY felt a "pull" if you will... Now normally, I would wander, grab a few books, & find a chair hidden in some lonely, quiet little alcove in the store, and sort through the items I'd selected to see if anything could help or just give me SOMETHING, ANYTHING for HOPE...but I grabbed this book from the shelf, read the back cover, ran to the checkout line and left the store to go home. Within reading the first chapter, I immediately found it gravitational, humorous, very easy to follow and read.... very spiritual, and somehow, someway, emotionally compatible and conducive to exactly what I was needing at the time. You instantly understand where Elizabeth Gilbert is coming from, what she's going through, and even her "fantasies", all with humor, compassion and a desire to continue "the journey with her". I was hooked. Every chapter, I was laughing, crying, dreaming, planning, petitioning, praying, and laughing again. Every chapter held me captive in all of my senses. You can feel everything she feels, you can taste everything she tastes (even her tears), you can see what she sees, you pray what she prays, her friends (and enemies) become yours, and you get to the end, and you're a different person. It's like the book emanates and "energy" right to you and through you, and you are left feeling HOPEFUL, alive, ready, stronger, wiser, more forgiving of others, and most importantly, yourself. You learn that they way you lean into and love God is between the two of you and no one else....that what you can't necessarily see, hear or touch, doesn't mean it isn't FULLY there, fully present with you, in all It's Glory. I've read it 7 times, all on different occasions and throughout different phases in my life...After months of reading it, when the next Christmas Season rolled around, I bought 13 copies and gave them to all of the closest women in my life. I'm now only a few months shy of age 48 (years young) and I'll read this book again and again...every time I read it I learn something new about the world, others, and myself...all through this amazing woman's courage to take a chance on simply sharing all of herself for one, amazing, adventurous, incredible year... what a gift. You'll never look at Italy, India, and Indonesia, with all of it's bounty, glory, and gods, the same again. I'm forever grateful and HIGHLY recommend this book. Oh! And 1 year ago (after 2 years of dating) I got the courage to say "Yes!" to the man of my dreams. :)

I really liked this book. I read it when I was going through a tough time and it just sort of motivated me to enjoy life, to just get out there and do something that lets me breathe and relax. A lot of people complain and criticize that she was rich and could just -do- these trips, but I liked it. For me, I just drove to a new city and watched the sun set on the ocean. It motivated me to make my own trip and enjoy life and I liked that. She just felt so real with life and I related to her and her love of food.

Well, that was a surprise. I rarely read suspense thrillers anymore- they all seemed pretty much the same and I am pretty tired of the serial killer trope. And I haven’t found a Kindle First book of interest in a while. But after months of reading fantasy & sci fi, a suspense thriller seemed like a good choice for a rainy New Years day. And what a pleasant surprise it turned out to be.“Night Bird” manages to be an original take on classic suspense thrillers. Yes, it has tropes of the beleaguered police officer, red herrings galore and evil killer. But the cop isn’t completely broken & flawed, the mystery really is complex, the underlying themes both unusual and believable- and the suspense unrelenting. Best of all the characters didn’t do unbelievably stupid things (or when they did, it was explained.) As a bonus, no graphic sex scenes and no reliance on foul language if that bothers you :)There were a few places where it seemed to go on too long or sentences seemed awkward but not enough to derail the story. Maybe someone who reads a lot of modern suspense thrillers will find this less original than I did. But for me this is a good addition to its genre and one of the best Kindle Firsts I’ve read.

*** LANGUAGE ***The Night Bird is written in plain English, with very little cussing and zero f-bombs. If this were a film, (indeed, it probably will be), it would probably be rated as PG-13. In my opinion, there is nothing in this story to preclude it from being enjoyed by all ages, save, perhaps, for your youngster under ten years of age.Quick & Dirty HighlightsUnlike many, or most, of the recent Kindle First titles, this is not overly quirky and is not a translation. The author is an established NY Times best-selling writer. This is told in third person POV and, whether or not a series follows, this is good stand-alone fiction.I am fortunate this month to be in Egypt. My new year started ten hours earlier than it did on America's West Coast, just in case your wondering how I got this book read so early in the day.I stated that this is not overly quirky. Well, the detective has a cat that accompanies him while he investigates, and his cat is not afraid of riding in the car. I have a friend in North Dakota whose cat rides at her side in her pickup truck, much like a dogs ride alongside their masters. Still, it does give a certain nuance for cat lovers. There's more of interest about this cat, but I shall permit readers the pleasantry of discovery. In other words, no spoilers here.I like the flow and the way the writer sets the scenes and alternates suspense in and out. In most circumstances, what you expect to happen may not be what does happen. This is why I refer to it as in the spirit of Alfred Hitchcock.Length: Print, 362 pages; Audible, 10 hours 5 minutes. Unfortunately, this is not a deep-discounted Whispersync title that makes it easy to switch between reading and listening to a professional narration, but it still is a title I will have loaded onto my iPhone so I can listen to it while commuting.Target Audience/Genre: Suspense, somewhat like Alfred Hitchcock would do a police procedural.Q - How was this book obtained?A - Bought on Amazon while in Cairo, Egypt, as my Kindle First selection.Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?A – Yes.Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?A – No.Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?A – This is an engrossing page-turner.Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?A - Nothing sticks out insofar as disappointment. The characters feel real, authentic. Ebb and flow of the story is just right. The one comment that needs to be stated is that certain aspects are just a touch unrealistic. To say more would be a spoiler.I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.EXCERPT'...“My situation is a little odd,” he told her. “I live in a house on Russian Hill.”"Wow,” Lucy remarked. “Nice.”"It’s not mine. The house belongs to Shack.”Her head cocked. “Wait, isn’t Shack—?”"My cat.”"You rent from your cat?” she asked."Yeah. He’s a pretty good landlord.”Lucy folded her arms across her chest. She wore a white sweater. Her brown curls brushed the collar. Her capris showed off the thin taper of her legs. “You’re teasing me.”"Nope.”"Are you going to tell me the story? Because now I’m intrigued.”Frost grinned and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Yeah, okay. About a year ago, I was called in on a home invasion case. Rich old widow, beautiful house on Russian Hill. She’d been shot dead in her bedroom. The uniforms who responded had a problem because the woman’s cat was sitting on her chest, and he wouldn’t let anyone near the body. Hissed and batted at them with his claws if they came close. He was protecting her. I grew up with cats, so I figured I’d give it a try. So I just talked to him.”"You talked to the cat?”"Yeah. I told him..." 'Excerpt taken from Chapter 7 of The Night Bird by Brian Freeman.Bottom Line:I wavered ever so briefly before deciding that this is a five star read. Although, as written, it is too tame for HBO, this story screams out for somebody to use it as the pilot movie to commence a television series. Not so quirky as Monk, but it will play well to that audience or to fans of Rockford Files.Five stars out of five.Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.Thank you.

Is it better to remember or to forget? Frankie Stein has devoted her career as a psychiatrist to helping her patients forget the most troubling and traumatic moments of their lives. But when her patients begin dying from apparent psychotic breaks, her whole professional life comes into question. Is her work to blame for their deaths? Or is someone out to get her? And just how does her own personal trauma play into the puzzle? Racing against time, she and Detective Frost must stop the deaths. But will they be too late? Read this book and find out! If you love suspense, you will not be disappointed!Brian Freeman manages to spin a suspenseful, engaging tale in The Night Bird. From the first chapter, I found myself pulled into the story, and I managed to read the entire book in a single sitting (about four hours). Written in third-person, the book delivers well-developed characters that left me as a reader wanting to know what happened to them. There are many twists and turns in the novel, and I found myself quite surprised at the outcome. The author's writing style was clear, concise, and fast to read. This is one of the better Kindle First selections I have read, and I definitely recommend it.

A classic biographic novel, written in 1934 by the wonderful Irving Stone, this old chestnut was revived by our book club, The Speed Readers. Many of our people, unfamiliar with Van Gogh or Irving Stone, were absorbed by the tragic tale of this tormented artist, so vividly portrayed by this excellent writer. Book clubs are wonderful venues for rediscovering older literature, reminding those of us who collect books, that there really is a reason to reread that book on your highest shelf or buy it to add to your collection. Makes you also want to buy a collection of Van Gogh's artwork, as many famous pieces are referenced in the book, whetting your appetite to look at the real thing.

This record plays through, start to finish without ever having to pick up the needle to skip a track. Every song is great. And for Bowie fans, the bulk of the music was written by ‘The Thin White Duke’.

I've always loved the art of Van Gogh but only, after reading this book, do I have any understanding of the man and his art. I want to hop on the next aeroplane back to the Van Gogh Museum and look at his genius with fresh eyes.

One of my favorite artists.A beautifully written story of the artist's tragic life and art.

I really enjoyed this book. I am going to Amsterdam in a couple of months and plan to go to the Van Gogh museum, I feel that I know a lot about him now.

This book is a work of art and a must-read.

I first read this wonderful biography when I was eighteen...I have loved Vincent and his entire body of work to this day.The print in this edition was difficult to read; and I would recommend a better copy for you, dear reader.Recently, I read an alternative account of the death of Vincent van Gogh which has long been assumed a suicide. I'm most ashamed that I did not retain the link...But, the premise was, and is, that Vincent was murdered by the jealous brother of a young student he had taken on as a student. The piece revealed significant facts unknown to me.These included the easel and paints left in the field by Vincent. And, his deathbed INSISTENCE that NO one was responsible for his death, only himself. This. of course, was in keeping with his nature . . . to blame no one for any of his many failures but his own self.I would be most interested in hearing your personal opinion of this theory. And, perhaps to links which may substantiate it.Regards,Patricia Parmley Matthews

Great book. Inspired me to seek out the great Impressionist painters of that time in history.

A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918, by G. J. Meyer

Review

"A World Undone is an original and very readable account of one of the most significant and often misunderstood events of the last century. With an historians eye for clear headed analysis and a storytellers talent for detail and narrative, G.J Meyer presents a compelling account of the blunders that produced the world's first "great war" and set the stage for many of the tragic events that followed." —Steve Gillon, Resident Historian, The History Channel"This is one of those books where you read every page.... Meyer organizes his book chronologically, and accompanies each chapter with a short background essay.... [A World Undone] has the very best qualities for this kind of comprehensive approach: a gift for compression and an eye for the telling detail." —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “A comprehensive history aimed at the general reader....You finish this book feeling you’ve learned everything anyone reasonably needs to know about The Great War.” —Pittsburgh Tribune-Review“Meyer breathes life into the human story within the Great War. He provides in-depth profiles of many of the political and military leaders of that era, and explains why they were so important....This is a literary vision of WWI that few of us have ever encountered. Simply put, this is historical reporting at its best.” —Smoky Mountain Sentinel “Thundering, magnificent...this is a book of true greatness that prompts moments of sheer joy and pleasure. Researched to last possible dot...It will earn generations of admirers.” —Washington Times"Especially suited for the interested American reader…. Meyer's sketches of the British Cabinet, the Russian Empire, the aging Austro-Hungarian Empire, the leaders of Prussia with their newly minted swagger, are lifelike and plausible. His account of the tragic folly of Gallipoli is masterful…. It should go without saying that in 2006 … [A World Undone] has an instructive value that can scarely be measured."—Los Angeles Times"Accomplished with brio... [Meyer] blends 'foreground, background, and sidelights' to highlight the complex interactions of apparently unconnected events behind the four-year catastrophic war that destroyed a world and defined a century."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

I've read several hundred books on WW1. I was surprised-- maybe shocked-- by how much "new" stuff I got from this book.Especially when you consider it's not particularly large. For a one-volume "general history" of the ENTIRE war, it contains a remarkable amount of interesting and intriguing facts, mostly put in context with interesting stories. It's a great read, and, if a person wanted to keep JUST ONE book on WW1, this would be my recommendation.

This is, without doubt, the best history book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. Meyer has managed to be highly readable and informativeat the same time. I had no insight into WWI at all, and now I'm tempted to re-read this 700 page book immediately because I couldn't put it down the first time. He doesn't just hit the reader with names, places, statistics and endless war logistics and battles. It's all there, but in context, as he intersperses "background" chapters between telling of the progress of the war itself. Please Mr. Meyer, write another book about the time between the two great wars!

This book is part of the pile I’m wading through to research a new story idea. I know I want to set it in England sometime between the end of the first world war and just after the second, but I don’t know exactly when. So, I figured I’d start with the first world war and work my way forward. This book is an excellent overview of the whole thing. The war is such a massive topic that it is almost impossible to cover everything, but this succeeds for the most part. Meyer covers everything in chronological order, so you get a feel for what was happening everywhere at any given time. He also includes small sections of historical background between each chapter the provides valuable insight into things like the history of the Balkans, the Junckers, and the Hohenzollerns. The only area that I thought was a little lacking were details on the war in Italy, but that is a minor quibble. It’s quite long, and really gives you the sense of the kind of meatgrinder the war was. I highly recommend it for anyone new to the topic.

Thinking about the First World War centennial, I picked up “A World Undone,” G. J. Meyer’s fairly recent (2006) and highly detailed account of the conflict. I don’t have the credentials to evaluate the quality of the scholarship, but the lengthy book certainly conveys the scale of the calamity and the scope of the human suffering it caused. And yet the war was almost an accident—petty conflicts and diplomatic miscommunications sparking mechanized slaughter on a scale unforeseen even by the generals and politicians so ineptly managing it. Even more sobering, the 1918 Armistice and subsequent Treaty of Versailles did little more than set the stage for World War II.“A World Undone” conveys all of this with different degrees of success, sometimes overwhelming readers with battlefield strategies and sometimes moving them to feel what modern war was like for soldiers and civilians alike. As it should be, “A World Undone” is profoundly unsettling, maybe especially for readers who think we live in the worst of times today.

Not much new here but a good general overview of WWI. An excellent book on the causes is Clark's "The Sleepwalkers". Meyer overlooks the fact that France had loaned Russia enormous sums prior to the outbreak of war with the particular aim of tying the Russians to France in an alliance against Germany. Meyer's pretty good on the dynamics of Britain's involvement, the Home Rule issue and Grey's essentially duplicitous nature. He's better on Wilson's actions in getting America involved. Simply put, the US had loaned Britain and France so much money by the third year of the war that the Americans couldn't afford to let them lose. The more history I read and the older I get the more I realize that if you can follow the money trail you can generally figure out why things happen. Well written, easy to read. Good introduction for someone new to this subject.

Never before have I read a book with so much information presented in such a logical, easily digestible way. Like many "history buffs" I know plenty about World War II but much less about the war twenty years prior that caused it. This book changed that. What I like most are the background sections on the key players interspersed throughout the book - such a unique but great method to keep the reader learning without bogging down the narrative. If the book started with all of that background, I am sure many readers would get dissuaded from finishing it because it's not quite as interesting as the war itself. Once you're invested in the story of the war, however, the background on the key players is fascinating. Highly recommended.

World War 1 has always held a special fascination for me.for one thing Americans care to know little about it because American troops didn't get into the combat until the last 6 months or so of the war. Also, it was an era before TV and radio. I suspect even Americans living at that time must have understood little about it as well. Yet, it was the conflict that set in motion all the other conflicts of our time. It's causes were more interesting that those of the Second World War. In the latter war, it was an open and shut case of Hitler wanting war at a time when no one else in Europe did. On the contrary, historians of the First World War are not in agreement on its causes or even who or which nation is primarily to blame for it. The battles of the First World War were slaughter fests over blasted, moonscaped earth conjuring up images of Armageddon. GJ Meyer does a terrific job in answering all the big questions and leaves no major topic neglected. Essential reading for everyone wanting to know how the present came to be.

Because I grew up in the 1930s, I heard a lot of spirituals and folk songs I assumed were passed down through white families. How surprised to find out with this book the influence of songs that have stayed with me through my life. Many I assumed were written by New York writers, or were from church songbooks. Familiar ones will surprise you as to their origin. I'm happy with a book I can sing all verses of instead of one verse. The book contains music to play as well as the words. In the first forty pages an explanation of the origin of this music, how the various types originated. Very interested to non-musical persons who desire background information.

This work is by John W. Work Jr. With his brother Frederick, he was the first African American to collect and publish traditional African American songs. This is the updated version that includes an essay by Work discussing the importance of documenting African American songs. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries he was dealing with misconceptions of African American song in general and African American scholars who wanted to get away from old spirituals as these were reminders of slavery. That makes this a brave book for its time. He was the father of folklorist John W. Work III who also collected folksongs.

This is a wonderful old collection of songs. Melody is included, and sometimes parts, and as many lyrics as the authors could find, but there are no chords, so if you want to play along on your guitar or other chord instrument you'll have to figure them out yourself. This book is worth having just for the historical information, which was fascinating. The authors went all over the South collecting songs, having people sing for them in bars, in the fields, and even in prisons. Some of the songs are really sad, a lot of them are about going to heaven, death, and hard work. Most are slave songs. There are some old blues tunes included as well.Love it. I wish it had chords, but that is not the fault of the book. Highly recommended if you love folk music.

If you ever want to know the origin of American Negro Songs, this is the book for you. You not only know the history but you have the music and lyrics also. Great for school and church.

Lots of good old songs and info about the songs, history, and style. Very singable.

Was not what I expected

This book has a lovely, large collection of songs. What's more, they are preceded by brief (but quality) scholarly analyses that explore the origin and style of the genres the songs are sorted into. My only potential gripe is that the collection seems to have more spirituals than all the other songs combined. The introductory chapters do a good job of explaining that, but it still left me a bit hungry for more diverse material. Overall an enjoyable, informative read, and absolutely worth the money.

AAA+++ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED SELLER.

The Human Body Close-Up (Close-Up (Firefly))

Review

An astonishing assemblage of trillions of busy cells dedicated to an immense array of processes, the human body is beautiful on a microscopic level, as revealed in this mind-blowing volume of hundreds of dazzling color photographs.... These pictures of nature's living lace, calligraphy, ceramics, stained glass, and tapestries are as informative as they are exquisite.... This striking volume greatly enhances our appreciation and impulse to care for our phenomenal physical selves. (Donna Seaman Booklist 2011-12-01)John Clancy zooms in on our organs, compiling more than 300 images of the human body snapped at high magnification. They look amazing--but not particularly human. At times, leafing through the book feels like paging through images of deep-sea exploration.... The deeper we go, the more abstract it gets.... At 1,250x magnification, nerve cells have the dots, swirls and seemingly random smatterings of a Jackson Pollock painting. And it's all right there, inside us. THIS BOOK HAS GREAT PICTURES, I REALLY LIKE IT.

This is an excellent book for beginners and experienced EMTs. Everyone should get a copy to learn more about their own body.

This book is very accessible. As a teacher it makes a great addition to the classroom.

Gave this as a gift and it was received well. Amazing and interesting pictures.

It is great for nursing students as well as massage students to see the pictures - biology comes alive, most people are visual, just looking at an erythrocyte makes you understand so much better

Full of really fascinating close ups of human structure. Great for both adults and kids.
