About the Author

James Marshall (1942–1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious children’s books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a master’s degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his life’s work as one of the finest creators of children’s books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children.

I am a school-based speech pathologist, and I LOVE this book. It is great because the stories are short, but have all the elements of a great story (characters, setting, problem, actions, conclusion) and teach through the lens of the friendship between two loveable and goofy hippos. Students of various ages have asked about the book and later told me they checked it out from the library because they loved it so much. I had initially borrowed it from the school library, but then bought it for myself because I loved it so much.

I have read this whole book (which is a compilation of the smaller books - each with 5 stories) at least 20 times. Yes, the whole thing. My 3 year old requested it nightly (as well as any other times that were good for reading) for several months. We had certain favorites, stories that made us all laugh out loud, like "The Trip" and "The Attic" and "The Mirror" and "The Surprise" as well as some that were absolutely heartwarming like "The High Board" and "The Garden" and "The Book" and "The Secret Club". All the stories are so wonderfully distilled, powerful but simple at the same time. I love that they weren't overly explicit about all the emotions and thoughts that George and Martha felt and thus packed a ton of powerful lessons into just a small amount of enjoyable words on every page. As a parent, there are a lot of books my kids like that I absolutely have grown to hate (Chikka Chikka Boom Boom anyone?), but this is completely the opposite. I find that I enjoy these stories more every time that I read them. I wish I had heard of them sooner. They deserve to be on all of the Children's Book Classics lists.

These are among my favorite books and I have always used them with children in a professional setting and the content fosters great discussions about friends and how George and Martha can do silly things and still be best friends. Personally, they make me laugh and I love reading them to myself and others to create a few giggles……these books are such fun!

My first grader son read some of the George and Martha books at school, and he loved them. I wanted to get some for him to read at home, but they are pretty old, so I couldn't find any locally. I decided to order this compilation rather than keep purchasing them all separately. My son was very excited to receive it, and has read many of the stories in it more than once already. Great for beginning and intermediate readers.

I loved these stories as a kid. My little sister and I used to read through George and Martha book we had and see who could go longer without laughing. We always ended up cracking up. I had to buy this complete set to read to my second grade students. There were some old favorites and some I had never read before. I also liked the bonus anecdotes and commentaries by other children's authors. My students fell in love with George & Martha as I did all over again.

SUPER ADORABLE!!! These two hippos are extremely hilarious, fun, loving, and adorably cute and so are their friends. Maurice Sendak and James Marshall again have created another masterpiece again!!! Loved them since I was a little girl and always will even when i'm a hundred year old little girl!!! Love love George and Martha!! :)

I am prejudiced about Marshall. I, like many other parents and like other children's writers, think that Marshall is absolutely superb. His drawings dawn on you in their significance after many readings, his prose, after only one.If I were to write a book that portrayed boys and girls on equal footing, and I wanted to show them both how to take account of one another honestly, I would have written about George and Martha. This edition has all of the stories, and it is a bargain price compared with buying each paperback book individually. It makes a great holiday or birthday gift. We have already given four away to friends, and everyone says how much they love reading them (over and over) to their children. What I can't understand is why people seem never to have heard of George and Martha. They've been around for more than 30 years, and I remember receiving my first copy back when Jimmy Carter was president and Reading Is Fundamental instituted its programs in the libraries. If only we spent as much money giving George and Martha to children these days...they might start to like reading again.

My daughter quickly fell in love with these characters, she now reads the stories to her little brother. I loved these stories as a child, so glad I was able to pass them on to my babies!
