When we were on the "El Chepe" train riding through and along the canyon we learned much by asking questions of the experienced and knowledgeable conductor. For example he was a wealth of information about the little children and their schooling, how they got to school from their widely scattered homes, what they studied and for how long, and what their post-schooling life was like (usually pretty empty). That kind of narrative belonged in the book, both for the children as well as their parents. The Jesuit hospital in Creel and the stories about it, its patients, and how the parents of a sick or injured child would carry the child for many miles through the harshest terrain to get to the hospital, and what happened after that. The photos were outstanding. The lacking narrative took my review down a notch from 5-stars.Bill Jaenike, author of "Black Robes in Paraguay"
