Granted, Cynthia Rylant is one of the best writers of literature. Ever. I've used a number of these short stories, all including an animal, not all die, with my students. We've read them, loved them, reread them, studied Cynthia's craft moves and applied her style in our own writing. Her stories are the gifts that inspire conversations, application and empathy, helping to grow amazing people. I cannot get enough.Our personal Top 3 Favorites:A Pet, Slower than the Rest, Papas Parrot
I love Cynthia Rylant's writing and I was really glad I ordered this book. Lot's of amazing stories about the positive impact animals have in the lives of humans. I teach 4th and 5th grade gifted students and we did some great close reading with several of these stories.
I bought this for my grandchildren expecting the stories to encourage a love for animals, but I really did not like any of these stories and wound up throwing it out. And I never throw books away!
Somehow I failed to realize that this is a little chapter book with the kind of cheap binding that is difficult to open all the way. The pages are printed on that dark recycled paper. The stories are nice, and my second graders like them, but I learned that I don't love Cynthia Rylant's voice as much when not paired with beautiful illustrations like I'm used to.
Love her and LOVE this book.
