What could be better than a novel that combines family drama and literary mystery? I found myself engrossed in the story and enthralled by the graceful writing. The Bookshop of Yesterdays is a moving tale that captures the turmoil of families while also offering a loving tribute to the quirky characters who inhabit books and bookstores. It's an impressive debut novel by a gifted author.

When I started reading, I had expectations of how the story would go. The mark of a good book/story is that the story takes you to unexpected places, in unexpected ways. The quest is what keeps me reading. Although about books, a tale of family relationships, while never perfect, still family.

I really enjoyed The Bookshop of Yesterdays. It caught my interest right away with its interesting and real variety of characters, the wonderful bookshop setting (OK, I used to work in a bookstore like this.. and still love bookstores) and of course the literary clues. The dialogue was very natural, and the writing style was smooth and not distracting. I recommend it!

This book kept me reading. I love the premise and the literary references. It even has sparked my interest to read books I hadn’t read before. I’ve bought multiple copies to share with friends. I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next!

Held my interest the entire time. Loved all the book quotes and the clues! I think I'll re-read Shakespeare, especially the Tempest!

I did enjoy this book. I did figure out the secret or whatever within the first couple of pages but whatever. The only real criticism that I can think of was...ok, I really enjoyed the characters and the ones who were supposed to frustrate you absolutely did lol. I just think the characters could have used a little bit more fleshing out. Just a bit. I know the lead character was on her own journey (of course) but a little more understanding of some of the supporting characters would have been nice too. That's it. Other than that TINY note, I did enjoy the story. I would and did recommend this to someone else.

This sounded like an amazing book, but it fell far short for me. Miranda was very self-involved, and none of her relationships felt real (mom was the most believable, but her best friend Joanie and boyfriend in Philly both lacked any detail that made them feel genuine)The "mystery" took far too long to resolve, and I'd figured it out before I was even 50% into the book. Why oh why did this drag on so long?The only thing saving it from the dreaded single star rating is all the literary references, which were quite fun for a book nerd

This is an awesome literary story built around the framework of Shakespeares "The Tempest" fleshed out with other great works.

Great book with lots of problems. Great book to study for any standardized test in math. It also has good explainations of how to go about solving each problem.

I highly recommend all of steve warren math books. They have help me raised my act and sat math score to 95 percentile very quickly.

What separates this book from other prep books are the explanations. The explanations are thorough and well written. This is an excellent guide.

I really like the author’s ACT math book so I was happy to see that he has also written an SAT math subject test book. As I expected the book is very well written and provides high quality instruction. The way the problems are arranged makes it really easy to focus on the types of problems you need to get to the next level. Any strong math student that uses this book correctly should get an 800 on the test or at least very close to it.

This book is amazing. I took the SAT Math II subject test once already, but I had to cancel because I wasn't confident about my score (700~760 range to be expected... cancelled for a chance to get a higher score).Pros: - Problems organized by difficulty - Realistic SAT Math II problems (Matches format and in level of difficulty) - Supplemental problems - Detailed answer explanations with alternative ways to solve problemsCons: - Answer explanations are right below the problems, with the answer often popping out.The only problem that I have with this book: answers glare in my face. I don't know why, but the answer in the parantheses always catches my eye, and I get a quick glimpse at the answer before actually solving the problem. It would've been a lot beneficial for me if the answer explanations were at the end of a chapter or at the end of the book. Other than that, very helpful, and I hope that this book will guarantee an 800 for me!Results will be posted May 21, 2015

This book was an amazing book and if one spends a good amount time on this book they will really benefit a lot in their SAT M2 exam. This book really showed the different types of problems that could come in the exam. I personally advice this book to any one who is going to take the M2 exam even if you think you are ready.

About the Author

JULIE CATALANO, MSW, LICSW, is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who has been a practicing psychotherapist for more than 20 years. She is a graduate of the Boston University School of Social Work. Prior to entering social work, Ms. Catalano was the editor of the East Boston Community Newspaper in East Boston, Massachusetts, and taught English in Poland for two years as part of the WorldTeach program. Ms. Catalano worked as a community mental health clinician for Catholic Charities in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and as a family therapist and outreach clinician for the Family Center, Inc. (now the Parenting Journey) in Somerville, Massachusetts. Ms. Catalano is the director of Neighborhood Counseling and Community Services, Inc., a nonprofit community mental health group practice dedicated to keeping community mental health services accessible to all. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers Massachusetts Chapter. Ms. Catalano resides in Somerville, Massachusetts, with her husband, two children, and their dog, Fluffy. Foreword writer DR. SANDRA P. THOMAS holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Education, as well as an MSN, all received from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I am working with the book at the suggestion of a friend. However, neither she nor I were prepared for the consistent promotion of alternative lifestyles. I guess the re-write of the book was meant to be politically correct at the cost of truly helping females deal with anger in a healthy way in t male-female relationships. Next time I will read the first chapter before purchasing.

This book has done wonders for me. I am only about half way through and already noticing a difference. It's given me great techniques to use and has taught me to be mindful of my thoughts. It's doesn't tell you that anger is bad, it just helps you deal with how you react to it. It has a handful of her previous clients and uses their stories as apart of the lessons. It helps to normalize the feelings you have and it makes me feel like I'm not alone I'm feeling this way. Also, it has you break down and evaluate situations that made you angry and helps you identify triggers and learn how to change your response in a difficult situation.

I think this is a great book for any woman with anger issues!! Each chapter has questions to answer that are very helpful.

So far the book has been very helpful!! I'm trying to take care of my anger on my own as I don't have the money for an anger management class. I have recommended this particular book to many different women I know.

I found this book very helpful as when you are angry depending on how you grew up you don't how to handle your anger. I know for me I come from a home with my dad used to throw things considered not handle his anger or express himself and I don't want to be that woman although I find myself recently unable to express myself appropriately. I wanted to learn how to talk appropriately again with people I love because somehow I had lost the way to express myself and I found that I needed to listen more and not just fly off the handle's to what people were saying to me and they needed to do the same to when I speak. What a great tips in here for anybody that's learning to manage any anger they may be feeling.I got this book for free in exchange for product review although this is solely my own opinion me different from yours I was in no way swayed to give a positive or negative review just because it was free.

An excellent work on explaining international, national and local laws, and a good read for anyone interested in international politics, or how the world works (both theory and application). I had no idea what a nation was beyond a vague idea, this book explains it, its relation to other states, how they all get along, (peace and embassies) or don't (war), and it's all in very clear language that anyone can read. The bonus essays are not necessary, but the do illustrate how Enlightenment thinking like this resulted in all of the limited "cabinet wars" of an earlier era.

I'll put it simply. This book is essential reading in order to have an appreciation of the thinking of the founders and framers of the US Constitution. Chapter 19 makes very clear the meaning of "natural born citizen", a term which has been woefully misunderstood and misrepresented. In addition, the book contains excellent descriptions of what it meant to be a citizen of a country, an idea that probably very few think about today. An important read for anyone who wishes to learn more about the thinking of the "Enlightenment".

This book provides a great deal of information for any history buff , highly recommend it

Intense (challenging) read but very interesting and enlightening. If Vattel's "The Law of Nations" is one of the significant sources for the original writers of the U.S. Constitution, the US has moved a long. long way from that source... "Book I, Chapter 19". I assert most readers will be surprised; some will be disturbed; many will be angry; all will be somewhat bewildered... and shaken. Be prepared: the book is over 800 pages including the index.

Although international law is a difficult concept in itself, Vattel makes its most important points clear and immediate. If you read no other work in this field, read this. Out of print for many years, the classic commendably reappears. Well done.

This is a wonderful legal history, but pretty dry reading.

Have not read all of it but is good.

The value of knowledge in it is worth more than the book costs.

Ahh, I found this be a refreshing take on the workings of the immune system. I was surprised at how thin the book is, but it still contains a decent overview of the immune system - enough to get a good grasp on things, but not burdened with the kind of detail that some other immunology textbooks are. I think it would be perfect for someone who is interested in the immune system, who wants to learn about it, but doesn't have to be tested on all of the details. This is a FUN book, and Lauren Sompayrac does a fantastic job of explaining the immune system using words that normal people can understand.I'd be surprised if this was actually used in an Immunology class, as it is quite small. I used it as a supplement to Janeway's Immunobiology, which is just overwhelming, but which was the formal text used in my Immunology course. I would use the Sompayrac book to get a basic understanding of things either before or right after lecture, and then would read the Janeway text while re-listening to my lectures, in order to fill in the details. It was still tough, but this book made it a little bit easier and may have staved off a few gray hairs. I'll be keeping this book around, and will probably re-sell the Janeway's text, as I won't need to know all the nitty-gritties of the immune system later on.

A few reviews have said that this little 141 page text is "dated." Two persepectives:1. The material covered is timeless. Our understanding of T and B cells will evolve over time, but the basic function, and the ideas of receptor sites, etc. are so fundamental that a few decades here or there cannot possibly subtract from the immense value of this text.2. Current thinking ("2020") is that we're entering an era of completely recasting the immune system, with as revolutionary a paradigm shift as recombinant DNA itself. One aspect of this is thinking of this system as multiple systems (6 or more in some literature). Another is the role of microRNA (small ds- double stranded RNA) and the epigenomic phenomena of RNA-interference.These phenomena don't subtract from antibody or cell mediated immunity as models, they ADD to them. For complete coverage of the new models, without spending a fortune or trying to scan a whole large text, see any book or recent article by Dr. Bagasra, including:Immunology and the Quest for an HIV Vaccine: A New Perspective .That out of the way, when our ClassPros and Library Picks surveys poll med students, THIS little text has come up in the top 5 for over a decade (and the top 1 or 2 in the last 3 years)! How is it possible, with texts of 1,000 pages, that an 8.5 x 11" 141 page, colorful "High School" looking monograph consistently takes these honors?The answer is the astonishing flow of the metaphors coupled with "aha" pictures and illustrations on every page. Each page, though PACKED with information, is told like a story, and the pictures, both descriptive and visual, "stick" in your mind in a way that allows a synthesis that no other text has ever achieved, in my opinion (I'm a molecular biologist) in ANY field I've reviewed! Lauren makes the field "seem" understandable with only the most basic understanding of bio, and every reader here knows that simply isn't true--immunology is one of the most complex, rapidly changing fields in all of bio. The balance of history, metaphor, quant and color illustration is nearly perfect.You can literally get more insight into the CURRENT view of the immune system from an integrative point of view with intuitive understanding with two days immersed in this book than a semester with Janeway (888 pages), Parham (600 pages) or Male (480 pages). I'm not knocking those fine texts, and you certainly need their detail, but without Sompayrac, you will sincerely miss the "whole picture" that relates SO many topics.As an intro, a reference (now comes with fully searchable pdf), a supplement, or even just an enjoyable popular science review that will make you a LOT smarter than those who took Janeway but missed this (;=)), I cannot recommend this enough, and intend to make sure the adjunctive option is on all those Amazon text pages for the benefit of all of us struggling with this wonderful but challenging field.Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. We always buy the items we review for the sake of objectivity, and although we search for gems, are not shy about trashing an item if it's a waste of time or money for Amazon shoppers. If the reviewer identifies herself, her job or her field, it is only as a point of reference to help you gauge the background and any biases.

A very nice, searchable intro to the immune system. I got the kindle for PC version because I was immersed in discussions with anti-vax people who have no clue how the immune system works, preferring the magic of alternative medicine to evidence based medicine. The problem is my dated knowledge had me speaking from a similar position of ignorance. I'm not sure my ossified brain can retain the latest discoveries, but at least I have a current reference. I also purchased a used version of The Immune System, 3rd Edition Paperback – January 19, 2009 by Peter Parham http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0815341466/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and sent copies to people who show a desire to learn what is known vs what some wish to be so.

If they had a book like this for every body system, med school would be soooo much easier! Forget all of those overly complicated histo and physio books, this is all you need to succeed with the immune system.The immune system is taught in a very intuitive and straightforward manner. The author is careful to remind you of abbreviations and concepts from earlier lessons, so you don't need to waste time going back to look things up.I can not recommend this book enough for anyone interested in immunology, be it a 1st-year med student or high school senior.

Excellent breakdown of immunology for someone who is lacking a foundation. It lays things out sequentially, but you can also easily skip around if your classes are run in a different order of material presentation. It's much shorter than I expected, but I think one of the things I appreciate about this book most is its concision. If you're thinking about getting a supplement for immuno, this should be your first stop. It doesn't go as in detail as needed in some cases, but it will give you a solid foundation.

How the Immune System Works is a great book. The author provides a clear and concise overview of the immune system without drowning the reader with endless details. The analogies and plain language make immunology easy to understand and remember. I read Kuby's Immunology as an undergrad and is no doubt an excellent reference. As a medical student, however, How the Immune System Works was all I needed to organize the facts and develop a solid understanding of the subject.

Amazingly good intro. Just some top-notch scientific writing in like, incredibly easy to understand format. Don't miss the hot dog photos (seriously).
