Because I grew up in the 1930s, I heard a lot of spirituals and folk songs I assumed were passed down through white families. How surprised to find out with this book the influence of songs that have stayed with me through my life. Many I assumed were written by New York writers, or were from church songbooks. Familiar ones will surprise you as to their origin. I'm happy with a book I can sing all verses of instead of one verse. The book contains music to play as well as the words. In the first forty pages an explanation of the origin of this music, how the various types originated. Very interested to non-musical persons who desire background information.

This work is by John W. Work Jr. With his brother Frederick, he was the first African American to collect and publish traditional African American songs. This is the updated version that includes an essay by Work discussing the importance of documenting African American songs. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries he was dealing with misconceptions of African American song in general and African American scholars who wanted to get away from old spirituals as these were reminders of slavery. That makes this a brave book for its time. He was the father of folklorist John W. Work III who also collected folksongs.

This is a wonderful old collection of songs. Melody is included, and sometimes parts, and as many lyrics as the authors could find, but there are no chords, so if you want to play along on your guitar or other chord instrument you'll have to figure them out yourself.This book is worth having just for the historical information, which was fascinating. The authors went all over the South collecting songs, having people sing for them in bars, in the fields, and even in prisons. Some of the songs are really sad, a lot of them are about going to heaven, death, and hard work. Most are slave songs. There are some old blues tunes included as well.Love it. I wish it had chords, but that is not the fault of the book. Highly recommended if you love folk music.

Was not what I expected

This book has a lovely, large collection of songs. What's more, they are preceded by brief (but quality) scholarly analyses that explore the origin and style of the genres the songs are sorted into. My only potential gripe is that the collection seems to have more spirituals than all the other songs combined. The introductory chapters do a good job of explaining that, but it still left me a bit hungry for more diverse material. Overall an enjoyable, informative read, and absolutely worth the money.

While I love the way Hemingway writes, I hate the way he writes women. But I also enjoy a good, stiff drink. It seems Hemingway and I have more in common than I'd care to admit. Fortunately, Greene has combined all the best parts of Hemingway: a handful of excerpts from his books, plenty of stories ABOUT Hemingway, and the recipie of almost 60 drinks that Hemingway himself either favored, are mentioned in his books, or (in many cases), both.My favorites are the Jack Rose (from The Sun Also Rises) - applejack, lime and a splash of grenadine - and of course, a martini (although Hemingway apparently preferred a Gibson.) Its an entertaining read all the more so because of the connection to Papa Hemingway. The recipes are also great (although I don't think I can ever bring myself to try the concoction combining scotch, sherry and champagne.)

The airport lounge full of stranded travelers began to smell like the bull pens in Pamplona as the snow slowly buried Minneapolis in its fluffy sarcophagus. "Two more hours' delay, Ingles", said the shoe-shine boy on his fifth pass over my now-darkened natural canvas all-stars. "You had better take a walk to the bar by Gate 67 before your shoes stiffen up." I looked up from the book I had been reading. A good book. A book filled with hope, and fine stories and memories of days on fishing streams with good whisky and stories of women, some with few clothes. i walked through the corridor to the bar, to a dulled, scratched expanse of wood with filmy rings from travelers departed months ago. I put down the book, opened it, pointed to the page, and said "Remember the Maine. Can you make it? Can you make it cold, and sweet, and with the spirit of Papa looking over your shoulder as you add the absinthe?"......

Phil Greene wrote one heck of a book, starting each chapter with a recipe for a cocktail I used to hear about in my parents' time, then adding old pictures of Hemingway's gang and describing where the cocktails were referenced in Hemingway literature. He even added a comment of his own here and there. Greene is a lawyer by profession and co-founder of the American Cocktail Museum in New Orleans. But he's also a good writer. This is one of the most beautifully constructed reads I've ever experienced. I was carried to those decadent days of Hemingway's life in Key West, Paris, and parts of Italy. What fun to take the ride without the hangover. And you don't have to have read Hemingway to enjoy it, either! But if you haven't, I bet you'll start....

I was introduced to this book when it was lent to me as I prepared for my Hemingway way pilgrimage/cruise. It has some great drink recipes and links them well to Hemingway, his stories and experiences while drinking or writing about them. A good read in it's own right, but useful for experimenting too.

I enjoyed reading "To have and have another" very much. Now I am really enjoying going back and trying as many of the cocktails described in the book as possible. Now I'm reading all of Hemmingway's major works. I'm enjoying them more then my college days, especially combined with the referenced cocktails!!

If you need encouragement to drink, this may be the volume to do it with. I don't need encouragement but found this volume a welcome respite with a good drink. The relationship between the drinks as they relate to Hemingway is great and will give you a story to tell while lined up at the bar. Need a good opening line...you can comment on the origins of the drink they have in hand.

Interesting and entertaining, both from the extensive cocktail recipes and from a casual look at Ernest Hemingway. An easy read, can be picked up at any point so great for keeping one entertained while traveling.

Travel back in time, into the pages of the life and lore of Hemingway with a drink in hand: Absinthe in Paris in the 20s, Champagne with bitters and a sugar cube in Stresa, Italy; a Maestro Collins with London dry gin while fishing for marlin out on the Gulf Stream between Key West and Havana. Philip Greene, master mixologist and Hemingway aficionado combines photos, anecdotes, side-bar items about bars, books, and drinking buddies -- and the recipes of course -- in this great book that is a party unto itself. It is a relatively short book, coming in at 167 pages (not including bibliography but including notes section), yet it covers the whole spectrum of the national music of the Dominican Republic.Mr Austerlitz covers the beginnings of this music all the way through to its current state. It also spends time on Merengue's development during the Trujillo era (a particularly interesting topic to anyone who studies the Dominican Republic).Mr Austerlitz also does a good job of addressing the sociological issues that arise from music and manages to blend well the merengue of the campo with that of the salon.A good read and it even comes with a CD with some very good campo (country) merengue. This week I read into the Caribbean. I expected one thing, a travel guide, which I enjoy plenty well on their own, but what I got was something more. This book is a series of adventures from a life well lived.  Dreffin interjects a certain level of spirituality into her work, and some of the best pieces, for me, were the short quotes at the beginning of each chapter, setting the stage. There are several photographs throughout and I could absolutely see this re-done as a glossy coffee table book. Each story focuses either on a sea creature or a locale.  The stories are personable, with small family details intermixed and by the time you pass through the third story in the collection you begin to feel like a stowaway on a family's adventure. Dreffin does a very nice job of bringing her family into the work and making this more than a solitary travel log, but at the same time, the family is not the story, they are just witnesses to it.  This book is not the dry stuff of your typical travel book, detailing every nook and cranny for the planning traveller.  This is a Captain's log, it is a love story to all the places this family visits and all the amazing animals and people they encounter.The Caribbean is always one of my favorite destinations, and this book made me start watching Beach House Bargain Hunters and dreaming of escape.  I love the idea of an unfettered life, and Dreffin captures that sense of adventure in these stories.  I enjoyed it, and suspect the memory of feeding the stingray, or watching the hatchling turtles struggle to the sea, will stick with me for a long time.  Dreffin puts enough of her "self" into the work for the reader to feel escorted, but not so much that the reader feels a voyeur.  I walked these stories as if they were my life, and for the short hours it took to enjoy them, it was. Â

I chose this rating because the characters were very interesting and the adventure never stopped. There wasn't one thing I didn't like about this book. The author kept it flowing. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has a sense of adventure and likes to travel via arm chair. Enjoy!

This is a cute, little self-published book ... but great for a quick escape. These are almost like journal entries or small articles, but the home-grown photos are nice, and give an authentic feeling. (I especially liked Nikki the dolphin!)

Just a short read but author's descriptive style made me feel like I was snorkeling in a secluded bay in the Caribbean!

I just read this amazing book and it is incredible! A really fun, exciting and amazing collection of stories that make you feel like you are right there - step by step in the Caribbean on each adventure... An insightful and engaging author!

I wouldn't call this book a dictionary per se, as it is not in alphabetical order, nor is it in chronological order, or any other order that I've figured out. Having said that, I really enjoy this visual "dictionary" of the current Dr. Who. The graphics are phenomenal and it's really fun to read all the snippets of information with each photo. There's even a fold out page for the TARDIS. It's very up-to-date, which is hard to do when a series is still in production. The cover is fantastic with 3-D images and the current Doctor appearing and disappearing in front of the TARDIS. It is chock-full of photos of every conceivable aspect of the re-booted TV series. As such, it doesn't include much on the classic series. There is a page for Sarah Jane Smith and one for K-9, but I assume that is because they made an appearance on the rebooted series. There is also a "sidebar" on pages 14-15 containing photos of all the past Doctors and why they regenerated, which is too little information on the classic series. All-in-all I would heartily recommend this exquisite photo-packed volume to any fan of the current Dr. Who series.

I have bought several Doctor Who books & 'dictionaries' lately & this is definitely my favorite! It's a hardcover with a beautiful, lenticular cover; is full of high-quality pictures, and basic facts about the current Doctor, Clara & the characters they've encountered (that only a few recent books would have). It makes a perfect present for Whovians, especially fans of the newer Doctors! :)The only 'negatives' (sort of) are the facts that it's a 'Dictionary,' so doesn't have in-depth summaries, commentaries or explanations about the epidodes, and focuses on Peter Capaldi (the newest, 12th Dr), Matt Smith & David Tennant. So if you're looking for a comprehensive book about the first 11 doctors, the older 50th Essential Guide, Doctor's Lives & Times, etc would be a better fit. As mentioned, only a few recent ones will cover Peter Capaldi (2014 & 2015 seasons).So it's a beautiful, 'fancy' hardcover that's perfect for Doctor Who fans who would enjoy BASIC, FUN FACTS WITH TONS OF GORGEOUS PICTURES about the newer Doctors, their companions, and other characters+monsters that they meet. The topics are NOT in alphabetical order, but the Table of Contents on pages 4&5 provide a full list of what's covered in the 173 pages (prior to the Index & Acknowledgments).It includes info & pictures on the Doctor's different anatomy/organs (ie. 2 hearts, brain), regenerations, sonic screwdrivers & other 'tools,' THE TARDIS (there's a pull-out section), River, the UNIT, the Master, companions (including Sarah Jane Smith & K9), other characters (Danny Pink, Captain Jack, Madame Vestra, Jenny, Strax), and different monsters, species, planets, space stations (tons on Daleks of course, Weeping Angels, Cybermen, the Jagrafess, Prisoner Zero, the Alliance, Star Whale, Krillitanes, Peg Dolls, Smilers, Kahler, Karabraxos, Half-Face Man, SS Madame de Pompadour, Skovox Blitzer, Satellite 5, Platform One, etc).Keeping this copy & planning to buy more as gifts! :)

Disappointed. Very good book overall, but the title is pretty misleading. This doesn't even begin with the Ninth Doctor who rebooted the series. It's all 10, 11, and 12. Good content, certainly. Talks about their enemies and companions. I had hoped for something encompassing the series- at least the whole of the new series, but also had hoped for the original portion to be represented as well. A good book, to be sure. But know it's not as expanded as you might hope.

This is a brilliant way to find a good, concise who's who and what's what of the Doctor Who universe.And, they do update them every couple years.The price isn't bad for the size of the book, and the pages are full of goodies with a couple "fold-outs" that are marvelous.The lenticular cover makes the doctor appear and disappear in front of the TARDIS...well done.I'd recommend this for any fan of the good Doctor.

I bought this for a Christmas present for my 13 year old son. He loves it! He has read it all the way through several times. The photos are great and the information is interesting and detailed. We are all Doctor Who fans at our house so we've all been reading this book. There are a lot of Doctor Who books out there, and I highly recommend this one for your collection and I know you won't be disappointed!

Very cool book for Whovians! The cover is one of the coolest 3d holographic pictures I have ever seen, it looks like you should be able to reach out and touch the pictures. Inside the amazing hardback cover isn bunch of high quality pictures and descriptions of all kinds of Doctor Who stuff to keep a true fan happy.

For a newbie to the Dr. Who series this is a great find. It has been a great help in filling gaps due to earlier episodes I missed. Well illustrated and very comprehensive as far as I can tell. I found everything I have looked up (~20). One caution though, if you haven't seen all the episodes, beware the "spoilers".

Fun and lots of pix....Can finally understand my one friend that does NEW WHO is talking aboutNo Cable here!
