I bought this book to look for scholarships for my high school child who will be going to college. Well, come to realize after reading through and scanning all the scholarships offered, only a small percentage are for high school students trying to raise money for college. Out of the 2043 scholarships they offer in this book by categories such as: General, Humanities/Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences, State of Residence, Membership, Ethnicity and Disability, I could only find 73 scholarships that she "might" be eligible for. They are almost all for small amounts- $1,000 or less also. It is a lot of work, for very little reward. There are less than 5 scholarships that are over $10,000 and the competition is fierce. A very large majority of the scholarships offered in this book are for college students, grad students, and adult students. I liked the book because it gives me a good "starting point", but I would say look for something geared more toward high school if that's what you need.
This book is definitely thick! I had originally stumbled upon this book when I was researching different scholarships online and had exhausted all my resources with the search engines that were available. There is definitely a lot to go through in this book. I would highly recommend at least scanning through all of them. Each scholarship listed is very well organized, so it's easy to to so. You can easily scan for the purpose of the scholarship or who the target students are.While I still have about a fourth of the book more to scan through, I would say there is a good variety. There are some scholarships that target high school level, few that target junior high, and some for general and specific graduate students. If you are a second or third year college undergraduate, I would say more of the scholarships are targeted for that level. Upon purchasing this book I would also highly recommend you use their website updates for their scholarships as a supplement. Each scholarship is given a code in the book that you can enter online and you can click straight from there to the scholarship website.Overall, I would say it was a good buy. Now let's just hope I can get some of these scholarships!
This book is insanely huge. It saves a lot of time of dabbling on the internet, trying to find that one perfect scholarship. There are thousands upon thousands of entries here, all labeled and easily referenced in the back.I would recommend this book for two people: high school students and people with a focus in their graduate studies that's along the lines of science and the like. This book is flooded with undergrad degrees and science degrees.I looked pretty thoroughly, maybe not enough. There are some catches in here.So, it's pretty cheap for the content. Definitely worth buying; but try to get it used as it's way cheaper.
As a incoming freshman, I'm scrambling to find enough money to get myself through college without selling my soul to a bank. I bought this book thinking it would be very helpful. However, I found that the vast majority of these scholarships are for minority students, adults going back to school and for people who belong to certain organizations. Of which I am none. The process of getting information about the scholarship on the website is very easy, but it's finding the scholarship in the book initially that is difficult. The numbering system makes little sense and the glossary is a rather odd. I find that I'm able to get a lot more information on scholarships that fit me on websites like fastweb, Zinch or scholarships.com. I would suggest going to those places first because you can personalize your pirameters to get 30-40 that are closer to what you need and not have to skim through thouands of shcolarships on your own to find only 1 or 2. It's a decent idea, just not very good for middle class, non-minority students.
If you're a white middle class student who isn't planning on going to the army, the number of scholarships listed in this book that you can actually apply for are about 10. That's what I found after going through 700 pages in this book. Most of the scholarships are state specific, for people going to the army, people who are african american or another race, or have a very specific hobby that for some reason warrants a scholarship (bowling? ...). To be sure though, if you do buy this book, buy it early on in the year so you don't miss all the deadlines. Of the 10 I was qualified to apply for, I was able to touch on two or three because the deadlines had already passed. If I could go back in time I would definitely not buy this again.
Every parent needs to buy books like this if you have college bound children.
Definitely helped me out when I needed to find scholarships geared toward what I am going to school for and after I used it I donated it to my schools library for others to use.
My daughter is a senior in high school, getting ready for collage in the fall. This book has been very helpful in finding random scholarships that you probably wouldn't find any other way. They range from simple ones that you just fill in the form and your done to the more traditional ones requiring an essay about a particular subject. It's a great resource!
